BILL AND JOEL PLASKETT ANNOUNCE SOLIDARITY

FATHER AND SON COLLABORATE FOR NEW ALBUM, SOLIDARITY, OUT FEBRUARY 17 VIA PHEROMONE RECORDINGS

THE SOLIDARITY TOUR BEGINS MARCH 15 WITH SPECIAL GUEST MAYHEMINGWAYS

When Bill Plaskett and his son Joel Plaskett get together to write songs the result, as Bill describes it, is “a touch of the traditional mixed in with the new, and a lot of the unexpected, arrived at through experimentation.” The result is Solidarity, an album that welds Bill’s traditional folk leanings with Joel’s long and acclaimed history in the Canadian rock landscape.

While Joel is a nationally adored, JUNO Award winning songwriter, the foundations of his talent began at home with his father Bill, who is an accomplished musician himself and co-founder of the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival. "My father has certainly been one of my biggest musical influences,” says Joel. “I grew up around him playing guitars and his love of folk music, particularly music from the British Isles and Ireland is something I've inherited from him – artists like Bert Jansch, Richard Thompson, and Paul Brady. Conversely, I have introduced him to some of my favourite records by artists like Those Bastard Souls, Led Zeppelin, and Gillian Welch.”

Bill and Joel’s converging approaches to songwriting left lots of room for both to help shape each other’s songs. Bill says the pair spent a lot of time “figuring out what to play, and what not to play, listening critically to each other, and talking about the results. And then figuring out themes, motifs, and connections.” The result of which is “a complementary but different melodic sense that creates a guitar weave that is unique to us,” says Joel. “Between the 6 string, tenor and tiple guitars, the bouzoukis and mandolas, there are a lot of ringing strings on this album. Wouldn't have it any other way."

Set for release on February 17 via Pheromone Recordings, the title track, “Solidarity” is a great summation of their collaboration, both lyrically and sonically. “I wanted a song Dad and I could sing together that connected our individual journeys and our personal politics,” says Joel. “The word ‘solidarity’ came to mind and didn't leave.”

Both Bill and Joel’s tracks on Solidarity arrived here from many different eras, sources, and stages of life. Bill wrote “No Sight Compares” in the early 1970s about a troubled relationship and signs from nature that everything would work out fine, while Joel’s “The New California” was written this past summer at a hotel in Yellowknife where “the Alpine trees and perpetual sunlight on the Great Slave Lake made me think of some magical part of California I dreamt up,” claims Joel.

While “We Have Fed You All For A Thousand Years,” “Jim Jones,” and “On Down the River” are older songs, each heard many times on the Plaskett family tape player and now revisited by father and son together, other tracks on Solidarity pay homage in a less direct manner. Both “Dragonfly” and “Up In The Air” give a nod to some of Bill’s guitar heroes, Bert Jansch and Richard Thompson, and one of Joel’s favourite songwriters, Al Tuck.

Not all the cuts on Solidarity required as much forethought though. “Help Me Somebody Depression Blues” was recorded spur of the moment with Bill on acoustic guitar in one of the studios and Joel on drums in the other. Divided by a window but connected through headphones, the two hammered out the track, VU meters in the red throughout “in one take, or was it two?” wonders Bill.

Beginning March 15, Bill and Joel will embark on the Solidarity Tour across Canada, performing their collaborations and other songs from Joel’s vast catalog. Peterborough fuzz-folk duo Mayhemingways is also along for the ride as opening support and performing with Bill and Joel. Full tour dates can be found below, with more tour dates to be announced shortly. Tickets are on sale December 2.

“Do Easy, the album, makes the magical mundane, and vice-versa.” - Exclaim! 8/10

“Do Easy invites you into its own rarefied world, a world where things are exotic, tranquil and seductively unique and makes you want to stay there.” - Line Of Best Fit 8/10

“Exquisite… On their sumptuous third album they situate their voices on a pillowy bed of experimental pop, freak folk and, best of all, the sax-enhanced exotica of
the title track.” - Uncut 8/10

“Easily the finest work of art to come out of Canada all year… Do Easy is a beautiful, big-sounding lesson in how to do witty, wise, lyrical dream-pop with the sort of perfection that the genre deserves.” - Monocle

Following the excellent reviews for their just-released album, Do Easy, out now on Outside Music / Hand Drawn Dracula, Tasseomancy have shared a surreal video for album cut “29 Palms”. Of the video Tasseomancy say: “The video for 29 Palms was created by our friend, the very talented visual artist Jesi Jordan, on one of her many worldwide adventures. To us, this song encapsulates so much: written for women; for artists and for any human who has ever felt themselves falling into nothingness while grasping at their own poetic string. Whether it be a loss of self, loss of another or an attempt to create meaning in what has so been recently confirmed to be an unjust and crazy-cruel world. Jesi's video is like a friend who calls us up on the phone early in the morning and gently reminds us that life is not elsewhere but is happening by the touch of our own hand in this very moment and that's all we've got.”

Sisters Sari and Romy Lightman, aka Tasseomancy, are former members of queer cold-wave band, Austra. Channelling their former forays in psychedelic folk into a kind of lushly accessible, warmly experimental dream-pop along with bandmates Johnny Spence and Evan Cartwright, they explore manipulated sounds, all with mood in mind. Assisted by friends Ryan Driver (flute), Simone Schmidt (voice of a young Neil Young), and Alex Cowan (Blue Hawaii) that exploration reaches full bloom on Do Easy, the sound of a band hitting their richly imagined, luxuriously executed stride. And, wealth of evocative references included, making it all sound easy.

DANNY MICHEL ANNOUNCES 'KHLEBNIKOV' RELEASE DATE, SHARES NEW SONG "24,000 HORSES"

DANNY MICHEL ANNOUNCES JANUARY 20 RELEASE DATE FOR KHLEBNIKOV. SHARES SONG “24,000 HORSES”

Earlier this year, Danny Michel returned from the trip of a lifetime with Canadian Astronaut Col. Chris Hadfield who invited him to join Generator Arctic, an expedition traversing the Arctic Ocean aboard the Russian ice-breaker Kapitan Khlebnikov with scientists, photographers, writers, videographers. The mission was to capture the experience and share it with the rest of world. Danny’s goal was to record an album entirely inspired by the immediate surroundings and record that album aboard the Kapitan Khlebnikov using a makeshift studio in his cabin comprised of camera tripods, hair ties, and gaffing tape.

The result of that time spent writing and recording in the middle of the Arctic Ocean is Danny’s upcoming album, Khlebnikov, which is set for release on January 20, 2017. The album itself breaks new ground, or ice, for Danny and is quite literally explorational. For the finished record think a classically informed Tom Waits meets Tim Burton feel. The album itself may also qualify for a Guinness World Record for the most northern album ever recorded. Keep your fingers crossed!

Today, the acclaimed songwriter is sharing the song “24,000 Horses” from the upcoming album. “One evening at 4:00am I woke to massive muffled booms and thuds of the Khlebnikov lurching through the Arctic ice,” recalls Danny. ”Too curious to sleep I put on all of my gear and went outside to see what was happening. There alone, at the bow I witnessed one of the most glorious moments of my life. Under an endless sky and midnight sun, I watched pieces of ice the size of tennis courts break, flip, and bounce around like bowling pins under the hull of the mighty Khlebnikov. Later that day I wrote “24,000 Horses”

During his 18 days aboard the Khlebnikov, Danny recorded in his tiny cabin and invited some guests to cram into the ‘studio’ to share their talents, including Col. Hadfield (singing in Russian), and the dishwasher from the Khlebnikov kitchen. The tracks captured there made their way back to Canada to begin collaboration with composer Rob Carli who, aside from being a member of Danny’s band, is one of Canada’s most in-demand composers with 15 Gemini and Canadian Screen Award nominations, 5 Gemini Awards and 2 Canadian Screen Awards and 3 SOCAN Awards for domestic television.

To fully comprehend the experience and the conditions of the expedition, Danny has captured his trip in an installment of his series Dan’s Space Van.
