Daniel Romano is set to release Finally Free on November 30 via You’ve Changed Records in Canada. The 9-song set is Romano’s eighth long playing album in the last eight years.  Recording, producing, designing his album art, and directing their accompanying videos, Romano has had what understatedly would be considered a prolific output of entrancing, poignant and creative work in this span of time. Finally Free follows his acclaimed 2017 album Modern Pressure, which Noisey praised, “It’s sonically spiritual to 2016’s Mosey, and shows Romano continuing to sharpen his signature sound, combining elements of retro-tinged rock ‘n’ roll, country, and psychedelia to create a vibrant tapestry of tunes that feel just as at home in 2017 as they might in 1965” while an unnamed subjugate exclaimed, “No matter what he does, everything he puts out is better than anything else being put out by anyone else.”

Finally Free was recorded on a 4-Track Tascam cassette recorder with Romano making constant stream of consciousness commitments to everything that was recorded in order to bounce them down to stereo and free up tracks for additional elements. “On every record I make strict limitations for myself,” Romano says. “This was by far the most extreme, but I also believe it has rendered the most honest and liberating results.” Overall, Finally Free harks back to Romano’s early studies and obsessions in traditional folk music while simultaneously conveying a surprisingly modern and engaging aesthetic. Dense with wisdom and blissfully encouraging in these end times.

Today, Romano shares the video for the new song “All The Reaching Trims.” Of Finally Free, Noisey, who premiered the video, states, “While it sounds like shards of every Romano incarnation that came before it, it’s also deconstructed, unshackled by any sort of stringent boundaries of form.” Continuing, “Finally Free is consistently dreamy, shaded with vibes that touch on the mystical and evoke the glory of the natural world. But it’s also punctuated with explosive moments of joy, like the climatic blast of its lead single ‘Empty Husk’, or the vocal bursts that emerge all throughout ‘Have You Arrival,’ as Romano delivers what sounds like a gentle cosmic sermon over fingerpicked guitar.”

Previously, Flood Magazine premiered the video for the album’s lead off track, “Empty Husk”.  Speaking to Flood, Romano said, “‘Empty Husk’ and the entirety of Finally Free is a lucid plea. It is a final apology and an attempt at the unwarranted reconciliation between us and everything in our path (including ourselves). These are my most proud prose and this is my most accomplished and honest musical output. It is dense and challenging and sometimes very difficult. Thank you. To whatever put this all together through me. I was alongside you in a blaze of creative wonder and I will never forget it.”

NPR notes that “Folk music can offer its performers and listeners a sense of sturdiness, of grounding, of being tethered to an established, easily traceable lineage.” They continue on to say that Kaia Kater’s new LP, Grenades, “puts folk's connective potential to a more imaginative test on her wholly immersive new album.”

On Grenades, set for release on October 26 in partnership with acronym Records in Canada and Smithsonian Folkways Recordings world wide, and available to stream today courtesy of NPR’s First Listen, Kaia draws on her diverse influences in Quebec, the Caribbean, and Appalachia, bringing them together to present an exciting musical direction. Known for her prowess as a songwriter and tradition bearer who performs with “the skill of a folk-circuit veteran” (Rolling Stone), Grenadian-Canadian artist took a decidedly different direction for Grenades. What started out as a search to discover the roots of her identity became a physical and emotional exploration of history, in particular her paternal ancestry, and has led to bold new heights of imagination and creative expression.

Kaia grew up between two worlds: one her family’s deep ties to the Canadian folk music scene; the other the years she spent soaking up Appalachian music in West Virginia. Her father grew up in Grenada, fleeing to Canada in 1986 as part of a student exchange young speakers program, after the U.S. invasion. His voice can be heard recounting those events during the album's interludes — a way for Kaia to tie her present with his past, in order to understand our current global climate of war, unease, immigration, and displacement.

Grenades is the lore of lives recounted. As Kaia describes it in the album’s line notes: “It is my grandmother Myra’s glory, it is my father Deno’s struggle, it is my march from the past into the present. Concentric circles of song spin around, lurching the listener backward into the cargo bed of a pick-up truck in the mountainous rainforests of Grenada on 13th March 1979. They pull you by the ear and plant you in the middle of helicopter gunfire during two months of terror in 1983. You are swept by the easterly wind and settled gently in the back row of a Boeing 737 at the exact moment when a young man decides to walk off a plane into the frozen Canadian winter. You sit cross-legged on the floor and listen to the words he speaks to me, his daughter, a quarter of a century later.”

Kaia started her career early, crafting her first EP Old Soul (2013) when she was just out of high school. Since then, she’s gone on to release two more albums, Sorrow Bound (2015) and Nine Pin (2016). Her most recent album weaves between hard-hitting songs that touch on social issues like the Black Lives Matter movement and more personal narratives speaking to life and love in the digital age. Nine Pin won a Canadian Folk Music Award, a Stingray Rising Star Award, and sent Kaia on an 18-month touring journey from Ireland to Iowa, including stops at The Kennedy Center, Hillside Festival and London's O2 Shepherd's Bush.

Hot off the heels of a string of summer festival performances, including Edmonton Folk Festival, Kaia is on the road in North America this fall to support the new album. Full tour dates can be found below.

Today, Lindi Ortega delivers a “blazing light of devotion” (Rolling Stone Country) in the hauntingly cinematic video for “Lovers In Love”. Accompanied by the harmonies of Corb Lund, the video is a timeless retro-western romance.

This acoustic version of “Lovers In Love” featuring Corb Lund was released on Ortega’s Liberty Parkhill Sessions earlier this year. Recorded at the Parkhill Studios in Calgary, the stripped-down, three-song session also includes versions of “Forever Blue” and “The Comeback Kid” which were part Ortega’s acclaimed LP Liberty.

The album, within itself, celebrating a three-part walk through darkness into freedom was called “a cinematic journey” by NPR Weekend Edition and was hailed as “a reflection of American culture” by NPR All Songs Considered. New York Times claimed Liberty offered “ample echoes of Ennio Morricone, Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton.”

Lindi Ortega has recently opened for the likes of Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit, Chris Stapleton, Dwight Yoakam, Kenny Rogers and more. She continues here tour throughout North America in November with Dustbowl Revival. For tickets and more information, please visit https://www.lindiortega.com.
