The day before the release of their upcoming LP Remains, Montreal duo Folly & The Hunter, multi-instrumentalists Laurie Torres (Rae Spoon, Little Scream, Land of Talk) and Nick Vallee, are sharing a behind-the-scenes mini-documentary of the making of the record. The album will officially hit the shelves on October 26 via Outside Music.

Remains was recorded over 2 weeks at the Tragically Hip’s Bathouse Studios, the goal was to get the band sequestered into a studio without outside distractions and have them live and breathe the making of this album. Engineer Nyles Spencer was a source of technical inspiration with Nick handling bass and guitar duties while Laurie played most of the other instruments. Mathieu Parisien (Karkwa, Patrick Watson, Aidan Knight) mixed the album.

Having previously recorded as a quartet, the pair had made their sketches of the songs at their Montreal rehearsal space and fleshed them out fully in Bath. Both Laurie and Nick used the loose and relaxed environment to get back to the enjoyment they had when they first started collaborating.

Recently, Folly & The Hunter announced their indefinite hiatus. "Taking a break has nothing to do with our love of making music,” the band says. “It truly warms our hearts each time we hear from a fan about how we have impacted them, and we cherish the time we have spent playing around the world. But keeping a band active long-term takes the right circumstances, and as time passes, those circumstances have become hard for us to sustain. We love performing and creating, but a musician's life can also be quite difficult. We both need to focus on other things for a while, for our mental and physical health. We are so happy that we are able to share this new album with you all. Both the compositions and the lyrics reflect the bittersweet nature of this hiatus, and it's a fitting farewell to this period in our lives"

Folly & The Hunter’s last album, Awake, saw them touring with Half Moon Run and dates with James Vincent McMorrow. Their magnetic sound has made them a favourite among music supervisors, with placements in the Melissa McCarthy show “Nobodies”; ABC Family drama The Fosters; Saving Hope; Cracked; MTV’s Awkward; Teen Mom; Rookie Blue; Private Eyes; Netflix Switched at Birth; Degrassi :The Next Generation; and Heartland, hooking thousands of new fans and earning over a million plays on Spotify, hundreds of thousands of YouTube hits, and Apple music streams.

On Sunday October 28th, a few days before the release of his upcoming LP, More or Less, Dan Mangan will launch a live, split-screen, multi-stage variety show hosted by comedian Charlie Demers. The show will take place on Mangan’s Instagram Live account and will include live performances, interviews, game show quizzes, and prizes. Fans and viewers can control the entertainment by demanding ‘MORE’ or ‘LESS’ of what they are watching.

Dan will also be joined by a packed roster of special guests including comedians Nima Gholamipour, Carla Mah, Ronald Dario, and Colin Cowan. Other guests will include everyone from CBC’s Grant Lawrence to Dan’s own mother, Louise Mangan.

“It’s like an album release party online,” says Mangan. “It also might be a trainwreck, in which case there’s even more incentive to scope it out.” Watch Mangan and friends experiment with the highs and lows of live television on his Instagram Live at 1200 PST | 1500 EDT | 1900 GMT on Sunday, October 28th.

Set for release on November 2 via Arts & Crafts, More or Less is an album that Mangan claims “feels more like ‘me’ than ever. More sparse. Less meticulous. More kids. Less time. More direct. Less metaphor. More discovery. Less youth. More warmth. Less chaos.”

More or Less is about “witnessing birth, and in some ways rebirth,” says Mangan. “It’s about feeling disconnected from a popular identity and becoming acclimated to a new one. It’s about raising kids in a turbulent world. It’s about unanswerable questions and kindness and friendship and fear.”

This January, Mangan will take to the road throughout Canada for a nation-wide tour, starting in Newfoundland making his way back home to BC. Full tour dates can be found below, with more dates to be added in the near future. Mangan has already been on tour with Stars and Kaleo earlier this year and will continue on with Snow Patrol in North America and Laura Gibson in Europe this fall.

Recently, Mangan shared the first two episodes of his More or Less Songwriting Series. Released over the next twelve months, Mangan and Stuart Gillies take you behind the scenes of his craft to discuss the songs and events that have had the biggest impact on him as a songwriter. The playlist of songs will also be featured on Spotify and Apple Music. In the first two episodes, Mangan discusses the process behind “So Much For Everyone”, a track from his first LP, Postcards And Daydreaming, and “Just Fear”, his most recent single from the upcoming More or Less.

BC SONGWRITER, BEN ROGERS, SIGNS TO DALLAS GREEN’S NEWLY MINTED STILL RECORDS FOR UPCOMING LP

With a pair of acclaimed solo albums to his name – 2015’s The Bloodred Yonder and 2013’s Lost Stories: Volume OneBen Rogers has been turning heads with compelling songs and captivating performances for a while now. Today, the B.C. based songwriter is pleased to announce his signing with Still Records, the newly minted label from Dallas Green, for an upcoming LP.

Green, who produced the upcoming album, explains what initially drew him to the project: “I recognized something really special about this collection of songs – this vulnerability from Ben was really moving to me. I think it was a brilliant experience for all of us and resulted in a really beautiful record. Not only do I believe in it and think it’s fantastic, but it also did something for me; it really opened a whole new chapter of my creative life.”

Rogers echoes the sentiment, “I can tell Dallas cares about this project as much as I do. He is just so devoted to the process. He really challenged us, but with a generosity of spirit that you just don’t encounter that often. It was the best experience I’ve ever had on a creative level.”

On his previous two records, listeners were gravitating towards his fresh take on country-tinged folk and Americana, Rogers found himself drifting away from it. The first single from Rogers, “Steady Going Nowhere”, gives us a taste of the direction he is headed in. The song is about "the streets and alleys of East Vancouver and it's dedicated to the people who call those streets and alleys home,” says Rogers.

The sound – still rooted in folk and Americana, though now with an earnest new attitude permeates throughout – is a raw, hazy, rock-inspired swagger that channels the likes of possessed masterminds from Nick Cave to Otis Redding to Marc Bolan of T.Rex. Put simply, it is enveloping and the authenticity is palpable.

Keep your ear to the ground for more details on Roger’s upcoming LP and future tour dates.
