Vancouver psych-rock outfit Yukon Blonde's new music video for "Feeling Digital" is an exercise in anachronisms. Filmed at midnight on the coast of Triangle Beach in Richmond, BC, the clip features cavemen, a hairy lizard man on a hoverboard, a clown, and a bodybuilder. Directed by Justin Gradin who has created music videos for Black Mountain and punk underground outfit White Lung, the video utilized multiple helicopters and lights to make it appear as if it was shot during the daytime.

With three full length LPs to their name, including 2010's self-titled debut, 2012's Tiger Talk, and 2015's On Blonde, Vancouver psych rock outfit Yukon Blonde have cemented their status as a Canadian powerhouse, earning comparisons to The Flaming Lips and Phoenix, delivering a welcomed throwback to the 1970's glory days of rock'n'roll. After linking up with producer Tony Hoffer (The Kooks, Beck, Air), Yukon Blonde took a deep dive into deconstructing relationships in the Internet age in their new record Critical Hit, released this summer via Dine Alone Records. To capture the broad spectrum of emotions experienced in today's dating world, Yukon Blonde steps out from their rock'n'roll roots, incorporating elements of electronica and erratic pop with the garage rock sound that first gained them recognition. It's sometimes tenuous, sometimes depressing, and sometimes jubilant. "It's hard to do a song by song breakdown, because as much sarcasm and wit as there is on this record, there is some intensely private shit in the lyrics too, and sometimes the vibe is just more our obsession with synthesizers and drum machines, aesthetics over lyrics," vocalist Jeff Innes says.

Graham Van Pelt has shared the video for his third single "Mountainside" via PopMatters. “‘Mountainside’ is a very special song for me, one of the songs I enjoy singing the most,” says Graham. “For this video, Toronto’s Fuego Collective zeroed in on the themes of growth, maturation and generational change. On set, but outside of frame, we had many heirlooms from different stages of my life, which the directors used to prompt certain emotional states and reminiscences in me as we moved through the moments in the song. I think they captured a pretty revealing portrait as a result. I’m extremely proud of this video and song and am happy to have it as a marker of this stage of my emotional life for years to come.”

Graham's debut LP Time Travel is out now via Arbutus Records. Graham also will be hitting the road this fall with stops in Toronto and Hamilton. Tour dates are below. Tickets are available here.

"I’d like to be as un-mysterious as I possibly can,” Graham Van Pelt says. He’s about to release Time Travel, his first record in the four years since he moved from Montreal to Toronto, and he’s no longer Miracle Fortress, or Inside Touch, or any of the aliases he’s used to record over the years. He’s just Graham Van Pelt.

With the perspective of leaving a longtime home, of watching old friends change and familiar places become unrecognizable, came a recommitment to an emotional honesty in Van Pelt’s songwriting. Time Travel’s eight songs are a tangle of friendships and feelings. Moving backwards and forwards in time, they occupy a space of elegant melancholy.

Immersing himself in the work of house music legends like Larry Heard, Vincent Floyd and Maurizio and the fragile disco of Arthur Russell, along with contemporaries like Jessy Lanza and Kelly Lee Owens, Van Pelt built the album from the bottom up, rooting every track in the crude sequencer of the Roland SH-101 synth, a decades-old dance music totem. The result are melodies that are simple but affecting, anchored to deep, wandering basslines. Time Travel was engineered by twin brothers Mark and Matt Thibideau, whose techno roots deepened the grooves throughout the record.

There’s a comfort to operating in the world of dance music, which is, in Van Pelt’s words, more of a “team sport” than the competitive atmosphere of indie rock. “I feel like one person participating in a community,” he says, “and less of a person trying to rise above.” The album is also Van Pelt’s first release on Arbutus, which he describes as his “dream outcome” for the record. “Their catalog intersects at a place that feels like home to me,” he says. “Music for late night, atmospheric music, really honest and unvarnished truthful stuff that never compromises.”

Time Travel is a renewal of Van Pelt’s vows with dance music, and with the genre’s pulse of synthesized melancholy. It’s a heartrending rush, as emotionally direct as a sweaty, jaw-clenching 3AM hug.

Living Hour has been expanding since their humble basement beginnings in 2015. Now a quintet, rounded out by Gil Carroll (guitar), Adam Soloway (guitar, vocals), Alex Chochinov (drums, trumpet, orangelle), and Brett Ticzon (bass, vocals), Living Hour’s emotive vocals, intricate harmonies, with dreamy washes of guitar, bass, keys, and horns sees the band pulling from many genres to create their own diverse vibe that's intimate, honest, and vulnerable.

Softer Faces was produced by Kurt Feldman (The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Chairlift, DIIV, Dum Dum Girls) in Living Hour’s hometown and mixed by Jarvis Taveniere (Real Estate, Woods, Blouse, Widowspeak) at Thump Studios in Brooklyn.

Known for their mesmerizing and deeply-moving live show, Living Hour has toured Europe, the UK and North America. Their performance captures the dreamy, emotional power of the band’s recordings, creating a mesmerizing, unforgettable, cathartic, and deeply moving live music experience. Sarty finds that, "Sometimes people are a little turned off and not living in the now or being present. I find that when you perform, it's one of the most present moments that you can be in. You're living in the hour." The band is currently wrapping up a North American tour -- see below for upcoming dates.
