PONDERCAST EPISODE 25 : CURIOUSITY

PON-banner.jpeg

Ah...the smell of a new book. There’s thrill and excitement and anticipation in that intoxicating ink and paper smell.

Laurie Brown claims she is “a freak about post-it notes - whenever I see an idea that intrigues me, a fact that astounds me, or a beautiful question that I want to spend more time thinking about, I slam a post-it note on the page with a scrawl about what delighted me.” A physical representation of her own curiosity.

In the latest episode of Pondercast, Laurie explores both curiosity and books, but mostly the life force that is curiosity. It is something that needs nurturing and protection because it is vulnerable.

Terra Lightfoot might have marked the first anniversary of the release of her acclaimed album New Mistakes, but she shows no signs of turning over the keys to the tour van. She has already logged more than 200 dates in support of the album, and today announced two weeks of live dates across Western Canada.

She’s already been warming up. Last week, Lightfoot joined Winnipeg native Randy Bachman onstage to help christen True North Square outside Bell MTS Place, with set highlights aired on Rogers Sportsnet and NBCSN before the Wednesday Night Hockey broadcast of the Jets-Leafs game. For over twenty five Skydiggers' friends and fans have reunited over the holidays at Toronto’s legendary Horseshoe Tavern to celebrate the season to the soundtrack of the band's distinctive rootsy Christmas tunes, including the 2014 release Angels, as well as Skydiggers' classics. This year, the band are taking that show on the road again with a run of performance dates beginning November 30. For the Horseshoe Tavern shows, Skydiggers will be joined by The Peter Elkas Band. Full dates can be found below.

MORE ABOUT WARMTH OF THE SUN

Recorded by longtime band associate Michael Timmins (Cowboy Junkies), the urgency and immediacy of the songs on Warmth Of The Sun is reflected in how the record was made. Several are presented in live-off-the-floor versions, often with live vocals intact, lending the LP an air of immediacy, vitality and intimacy, reflective of the band’s storied live shows. It’s also evidence of the strength of the road-honed band lineup joining Josh Finlayson and Andy Maize on the record: the rhythm section of Derrick Brady (bass) and Noel Webb (drums), vocalist Jessy Bell Smith and the most recent addition, multi-instrumentalist Aaron Comeau.

The songs on the album draw from a number of sources, everything from recent collaborations between Finlayson and Maize (“Like A New Beginning”) to songs that date back to the dawn of their collaboration in the 1980s (“An Apology”). “Show Me The Night” features an emotive vocal from Jessy Bell Smith and dates to a songwriting session between Finlayson, Tom Wilson (Lee Harvey Osmond, Blackie & The Rodeo Kings), Thompson Wilson, and Stephen Fearing (Blackie & The Rodeo Kings). “Push Comes To Shove” was one of several songs drafted by Maize during songwriting retreats at the Banff Centre and Finlayson’s “When You’re On A Roll”, co-written with Kevin Douglas, was penned during his frequent songwriting sojourns in Nashville. The set also includes two heartfelt covers: The Tragically Hip’s “The Rock” from The Depression Suite and “The Air That I Breathe”, best known in The Hollies’ hit version.

The result can only be described as a classic Skydiggers album, one that can sit shoulder to shoulder alongside milestone records in the group’s catalogue like Restless, Just Over This Mountain and Road Radio. “It’s a privilege to have had this opportunity to share our music with people for so many years,” says Finlayson. “Warmth of the Sun reflects our lives right now, and we’re lucky to share it with people and let it become part of their lives.”
