Growing up in scattered small towns across the Canadian prairies, the band Foxwarren initially bonded over Pedro the Lion and drew influence from The Band and Paul Simon. Comprised of Andy Shauf (guitars/keys/vocals) and his childhood friends Dallas Bryson (guitar/vocals) and brothers Darryl Kissick (bass) and Avery Kissick (drums & percussion), Foxwarren’s self-titled album is out now via Arts & Crafts. Captured on 16 mm film, the new music video for the song “To Be” features zoom shots done in the style of Wes Anderson that focus in on characters who appear alone in expansive spaces.

“Sometimes the simplest ideas are the hardest to execute,” explained the video’s directors, Ft. Langley. “Our concept for ‘To Be’ – featuring tryptic of introspective portraits – came together at the 11th hour, despite having been originally written a year and a half ago. Locations fell through, actors dropped out, gear malfunctioned; what could go wrong did go wrong. Yet the final film manages to reflect, in its own scrappy way, the heartbreaking loneliness of Foxwarren’s song, despite breaking our own hearts a little along the way.”

“To Be” was one of the first songs written for the project. “We tinkered with it for ages and ended up drastically reworking it the weekend it was recorded, but we knew early on that it was going to be the opening song on the record,” Darryl said.

“It was a guitar riff that I'd been playing for a few years at least, trying to figure out what to do with it,” adds Shauf. “It went through quite a few versions if I remember correctly. Foxwarren have a bad habit of never finishing vocal melodies and lyrics before we finish the music, so it made it a bit tricky and ended up being overhauled at the last minute.”

A few weeks ago Foxwarren gathered at Andy Shauf’s favourite Toronto haunt, the Skyline Restaurant, for a rare live performance. The set was captured for CBC First Play Live.

PONDERCAST EPISODE 27 : RICHARD REED PARRY

PON-banner.jpeg

Richard Reed Parry of Arcade Fire fame has released a solo album called Quiet River of Dust. Fire up your ears.

In November, at a special residency at Satosphère, (Societe des Arts Technologiques) in Montreal, where audiences lie flat on their backs in a dome, staring at 360 degree video (shot by Richard), and the band plays live, Laurie Brown worked with Richard on a piece of sonic strangeness to open the show. (You’ll hear that collaboration the end of Richard’s album)

So while in Montreal, Laurie sat in Richard’s kitchen and talked about music and creativity and hot baths. So in this episode of Pondercast, we have plenty to chew on.

The experience of listening to Quiet River of Dust is otherworldly, so clear some time and give it both ears. Then head here to buy it.

This holiday season, Begonia (Alexa Dirks) invites you share the warmth of the fire, the glad tidings, and all the other cliches of December in the new single “It Won’t Be Christmas (Till You’re Here)”. Written together with Wes Marksell and Jason Crouse of the Darcys at a SOCAN songwriting retreat on Pender Island, B.C., the song was inspired by community and the cold.

“Wes and Jason’s production room was in this beautiful cabin overlooking the ocean BUT IT HAD NO HEAT,” says Dirks. “We were drawing a blank on where to start that day but we were freezing cold so we let that inspire us and decided to write a Christmas song! We basically used every holiday related word we could think of: mistletoe, snow, fire, gifts, reindeer, stockings...CHRISTMAS FIVE MILLION TIMES!. We finished the song and showed the songwriting group at the end of the day and a few people laughed while others said that it was kind of annoying and that they couldn't get the chorus out of their heads. The holidays to me are about finding comfort in your community and also partying. I think this song reflects both our experience at the retreat, and the spirit of the holidays!”

“It Won’t Be Christmas (Till You’re Here)” will also be included on UK Website The Line of Best Fit's Ho! Ho! Ho! Canada holiday compilation series, which releases its 10th Edition on December 16th.

Begonia’s Alexa Dirks has never been able to fit into the box of being a "conventional woman". “I’m loud, I’m awkward and I’ve always taken up space. I've done things my whole life that some people would tell me weren't appropriate 'for a girl'.” That narrative that once tore Dirks down is now what empowers her to take charge of her own story, in her own way.

Recently, Begonia released “The Light”, her first new single of 2018. “The Light”, co-produced by Dirks with Marcus Paquin (Stars, The National), Matt Schellenberg (Royal Canoe), and Matt Peters (Royal Canoe), leads the way for more new music from Begonia due out in the near future.

Winnipeg-based Dirks is a JUNO Award winner with her former group, Chic Gamine. As Begonia, Dirks is bold, brazen with her florid, surprising pop that is tempered with sensitivity and wisdom. Dirks' first solo output, Lady in Mind, was listed on NPR’s 10 Artists You Need To Know in 2017 and “Juniper” reached #1 on the CBC Music Top 20. Noisey wrote that, “Begonia has one of Canada’s most extraordinary voices, and thankfully she uses it to obliterate the misery from this world one live performance at a time.” NPR claimed that Begonia is “the place where where synth-pop meets old soul and scrappy meets sexy."

Begonia will head back out on the road beginning January 19 including Winterupption Festival dates in Saskatchewan and The Longest Road Show Tour with Terra Lightfoot and Lindi Ortega throughout Ontario in February. All tour dates are listed below.
