Today, Dan Mangan is sharing his cover of R.E.M.’s classic “Losing My Religion” which appears in the trailer for the new CBC TV series Unspeakable, which Mangan also scored. “When I was a kid, REM was a staple in my household,” says Mangan. “I remember air guitaring to this song with my brother and sister. It was such a massive hit but also so unlikely a candidate to be so. The chorus isn’t really a chorus. It’s long. It’s repetitive. It’s like a hypnotic cyclical trance of words that stick with you even if you have no idea what they’re about. I really wanted to try and approach it from a new angle. There’s no point in attempting to sing like Michael Stipe - there is only one Michael Stipe. So I tried my best to let it live in a new light while paying homage to the original.” “Losing My Religion” saw its broadcast premiere earlier today courtesy of CBC’s q.

No stranger to the film-score world, in addition to Unspeakable, the JUNO Award-winning singer-songwriter has also provided scores for Hector And The Search for Happiness starring Simon Pegg and Netflix’s animated series Hilda.

Having completed a successful run of dates last year with Laura Gibson, Mangan is now taking his latest album, More or Less, on the road throughout Canada. Tour dates have already begun on the East Coast and will continue across Canada through February. Full dates can be found below.

Out now via Arts & Crafts, More or Less is an inspired collection of wonderfully relatable songs that manage to eschew the confines of what you might expect from a singer-songwriter. Produced by Drew Brown (Radiohead, Beck) and Simone Felice (The Lumineers, Bat For Lashes), the 10 songs feel as timeless as they do progressive.

More or Less is an album that Mangan claims “feels more like ‘me’ than ever. More sparse. Less meticulous. More kids. Less time. More direct. Less metaphor. More discovery. Less youth. More warmth. Less chaos.”

In the years since 20 year old Dan Mangan began boxing his way into the corner of every noisy bar that would let him bring in his guitar he’s released four other albums, toured relentlessly, won a few awards, found a partner who tolerated his schedule, married that partner, then welcomed a baby into their home...which is when things changed.

“I’d been touring non-stop for six consecutive years and the phone just kept ringing, but I felt my mind and body start to fail. When we learned that we were going to have a baby, I told my manager that I wanted to take a year away from touring. I felt I’d earned it. That ‘one year’ away from the grind sort of slowly became six.”

Shortly after, they had another kid and nested. “As the fog of domestic obligations shifted, I began to regain a sense of myself as an artist. But things were different. I wasn’t a part of the new generation anymore. I knew how to keep racoons from tearing up my lawn, but not so much about youth culture. And the music industry is, uhhhh... all tied up in youth culture.”

So in writing his new album, More or Less, Mangan wrote, like every writer is taught to, about what he knows. Or rather, what he knows now. “I wrote about warmth. I wrote about the feeling of building something when I was young, and the fear of losing it as an adult. I wrote about feeling overwhelmed. I wrote about being in love with someone with whom I spend a lot of time figuring out who is more deserving of a nap. I wrote about the power of what goes unsaid. More or less, I wrote about myself.”

For More or Less, Mangan worked with “some incredible people who have made many of my favorite albums.” Grammy Award winning producer Drew Brown (Radiohead, Beck, Blonde Redhead, Charlotte Gainsbourg) brought in Joey Waronker, Jason Falkner, and Darrell Thorp. For previous singles, “Fool For Waiting” and “Troubled Mind”, Mangan enlisted producer Simone Felice (The Lumineers, Bat For Lashes) who then introduced Ryan Hewitt and Matt Johnson to the fold to play alongside longtime collaborators Gordon Grdina and John Walsh. “This team found a vibrant subtlety that helped me rethink my identity as a singer,” says Mangan. “I cannot thank them enough.”

The recording process was piecemeal over several years and full of eye-opening experiences for Mangan. “Paul McCartney even wandered into the studio as we were listening back to a take of ‘Lay Low’”, says Mangan. “We ended up scrapping what he heard, but... well... he heard something I wrote. Let that be an omen.”

More or Less follows up 2016’s EP Unmake and 2015’s collaborative art-rock album Club Meds. In 2012 Mangan won two JUNO Awards for his sophomore LP, Oh Fortune, and his 2010 debut album, Nice, Nice, Very Nice, was shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize.

Last week, during an appearance on CBC’sThe Strombo Show,Broken Social Scene debuted two new songs, “Can’t Find My Heart” and “1972.” Today they announce Let’s Try The After - Vol 1, a new EP that will be released on February 15th via label Arts & Crafts. The EP’s electric first single, “All I Want,” with lead vocals by BSS core member Andrew Whiteman from Apostle of Hustle, is available today.

All songs were produced and mixed by Nyles Spencer with the exception of “1972,” produced by the band’s own Charles Spearin and Joe Chiccarelli. The EP is available for pre-order today. “The point is to keep going,” says band leader Kevin Drew. “We have more to give. These songs have lived beside us and become our commencement party while continuing together.  We hope you enjoy this EP for you and me.”

In addition to the forthcoming EP, Broken Social Scene have announced a series of residencies. The group will perform in Montreal at the Corona Theatre on May 21st and 22nd and in Los Angeles at the Henry Fonda Theatre on June 5th and 6th. More dates will be announced soon.

Let’s Try The After - Vol 1 marks the band’s first new music since their critically acclaimed 5th studio album, 2017’s Hug of Thunder, which saw the collective exploring new ground while maintaining the awesome dynamics that have made Broken Social Scene one of the most beloved indie bands of the last fifteen years. Since then, the ferociously prolific supergroup have continued to release a multitude of projects including most notably Kevin Drew’s work as producer and co-writer on Gord Downie’s posthumous album Introduce Yerself. The album debuted #1 on the Billboard Canadian Albums and won Drew and Downie “Songwriter(s) of the Year” and “Adult Alternative Album of the Year” at 2018’s JUNO’s. That same year Charles Spearin won “Instrumental Album of the Year” for his band, Do Make Say Think's album Stubborn Persistent Illusions. Vocalist Ariel Engle released her solo debut under the moniker La Force. Drew also made his theatrical debut with his play A&R Angels, which premiered at Crow’s Theatre in Toronto.

A NOTE FROM THE ARTIST ON LET’S TRY THE AFTER - VOL 1

The ceremony of dying generations without any guidelines for how to move forward makes
these times easy for the mirror wars to continue.
We can hide in the beauty of what has been stolen from us because somewhere there is mystery in not knowing.
How can the ruined survive without a back up plan?
Let’s try the after.

Today, Abigail Lapell is sharing the new video for “Down By The Water” from her upcoming album, Getaway due out February 1 via Coax Records / Outside. The track is available to stream on all platforms this Friday.

Lapell told The Bluegrass Situation that “Down By The Water” is “a springtime song, so there’s a lot of imagery of renewal or redemption, and even some biblical symbolism, suggesting an escape to a better place — whether literal or metaphorical. The song evokes the idea of getting away somewhere isolated, away from the world, in order to rediscover your voice or calling — something that ultimately deepens your sense of connection to the world. Like a songwriting retreat!

The video also marks Lapell’s directorial debut which she says “was a really fun and surprisingly time-intensive process.” Filmed by Brittany Farhat at Union Sound Studios in Toronto and featuring Dana Sipos and producer Chris Stringer, the studio was where she recorded her previous album, Hide Nor Hair which won a Canadian Folk Music Award for Contemporary Album of the Year in 2017. “It’s also where I met my fiancé,” she adds. “So this video and location are particularly special to me.”

Call it prairie noir, or Canadiana desert rock, Abigail Lapell sings haunting, gorgeous modern folk songs, mapping epic natural landscapes and deeply intimate, personal territory. For Getaway, Lapell spent time in the mountains, digging through her vault of unreleased material, and ended up with dozens of road songs to choose from. Working again with Stringer at Union Sound studio, she expanded her pool of collaborators, recruiting Christine Bougie (Bahamas) on lap steel, Dan Fortin (Bernice) on bass, and Jake Oelrichs (Run With The Kittens) on drums. Trumpeter and composer Rebecca Hennessy plays on “Sparrow for a Heart”—her trumpet swirling in a sublime duet with Lapell’s synth flute and electric guitar—and also arranged horn parts for band workout “Little Noise”, with Tom Richards on trombone. The latter, a subtle nod to the ‘Me Too’ movement, may even inspire listeners to get up and dance. The album also features longtime collaborators Lisa Bozikovic on piano and vocals, Dana Sipos on vocals, Rachael Cardiello on viola, and Joe Ernewein on pedal steel.

Getaway sounds fuller than Lapell’s previous records, her signature howl and warm, melodic guitar chops matched by a bluesy rhythm section. Building gang vocals on “Devil in the Deep” culminate in the entire band crying ‘Hallelujah, Amen’. Lapell and Stringer also incorporate otherworldly sounds, including an X-Files-like keyboard part on “UFO Song”, which tells the tale of a close encounter in rural Saskatchewan.

Yet there are also spacious piano interludes (“Leningrad”), and even an accordion tune (“Runaway”), that nod to how Lapell sounds playing solo. One of the record’s most striking moments is just acoustic guitar and two voices: Lapell and Sipos, captured live in a room together, harmonizing overtop plucked strings on the transfixing “Down by the Water”.

Closing the album, the other song about leaving, “Shape of a Mountain”, written in the Alberta Rockies during a Banff Centre artist residency, sets majestic scenes of wanderlust over cinematic strings (played by Vancouver cellist Peggy Lee, a Banff collaborator, and Toronto violinist Aline Homzy). The result is Lapell’s most eclectic and confident album to date.

Since the release of 2017’s Hide Nor Hair, Lapell has been on the road, touring across Canada, the U.S. and Europe, and playing at festivals like Pop Montreal, Mariposa, In The Dead Of Winter, Tiny Lights, and Folk On The Rocks. Watch for more tour dates from Lapell in the near future.
