With Donovan Woods acclaimed new album Both Ways named one of the best albums of 2018 by Rolling Stone, the multiple JUNO Award Nominated and Polaris Music Prize Listed songwriter heads into 2019 continuing this momentum with today’s release of the new song, “Go To Her”, which is available everywhere February 1.

The song wrestles with anxiety arising in the aftermath of a devastating relationship development. Originally recorded at the same time as Both Ways, but cut from the final tracklist, “Go To Her” is a fitting complement to an album that’s a study in contrasts, as one would expect from its name.

“I saw that phrase in the title of a book and I thought, ‘That means something to me and I don't know what it is,’” Woods says. “That's my whole guiding principle while writing. When a string of words resonates, I just dig in and try to figure it out. But what started the idea was people telling me, ‘You can't have it both ways.’ Or, ‘You can't have a record full of thoughtful lyrics that also gets played on the radio. You can't have those things both ways.’ This is just me trying to have both.’

Recently, Woods also shared Live At Southern Ground Studios — a five-video live performance package filmed with his band The Opposition at the iconic Nashville recording studio, which American Songwriter says "capture[s] Woods’ soulful passion, studied craftsmanship and ace band."

The video set demonstrates the versatility of his latest release, capturing the “cinematic, sweeping rock & roll” (Rolling Stone) of current radio single “Truck Full of Money” and the earnest, impassioned pleading of “Great Escape”, as well as the “very simple beauty” of his songwriting (Entertainment Weekly) found on “Another Way” and “Read About Memory”. The final performance included is the first-ever recording of an unreleased song “Think Of Me”, a heart-aching declaration that maybe time doesn’t heal all wounds, performed solo by Donovan.

It showcases an artist whose knack for storytelling and songwriting, as well as charming live chops, has led to over 81 million streams on Spotify alone, as well as having his songs recorded by the likes of Tim McGraw, Billy Currington, and Charles Kelley.

Donovan and The Opposition are embarking on a North American tour that begins on February 27 with a thirteen stops throughout Canada with Katie Pruitt. The U.S. leg of the tour sees support from Elise Davis. Full tour dates are listed below with tickets available here.

In March 2018, Lindi Ortega debuted a “triumphant” (The Guardian), three-part ‘Liberty’ album, which was a “deeply endearing” (VICE noisey) cinematic exploration of American culture. Now, Lindi Ortega introduces a purely instrumental ‘Liberty: Piano Songbook,’ out today, Fri., Jan. 25.

Armed with vocals that have been compared to artists ranging from Dolly Parton and Lana Del Rey to Amy Winehouse and Janis Joplin, Lindi’s signature croon is obviously absent in the music — encouraging the listener to dive into the real, raw emotion of the album itself.

With the help of ‘Liberty’ (3.30.18) producer Skyler Wilson, Ortega pulls 12 of the original album’s 15 tracks and reimagines them with the help of multi-instrumentalist Robbie Crowell (Kesha, Midland). While Ortega does play piano, having another musician record 'Liberty: Piano Songbook' allowed her the critical distance to enjoy her songs as a listener, free of the self-critical ear artists typically bring to their own work.

Ortega spent last year sharing bills with Jason Isbell and Asleep at the Wheel, and she'll will kick off a North American tour on Fri. Feb. 5 at Centre in the Square in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. For tickets and more info, visit lindiortega.com.

PONDERCAST EPISODE 31 : UNNATURAL SELECTION

PON-banner.jpeg

On this week’s Pondercast, Laurie Brown examines the idea that North Americans are constantly asked to choose. Everywhere we go we are asked to register our preference, to make a choice out of an embarrassing number of options available to us. What kind of phone to buy? Cable plan? Have you seen the toothbrush aisle at the drugstore?

We humans love to choose! It triggers something primordial in us: our natural selection DNA. We can’t help it - every time we choose anything, we are following our survival programming.

You could make the case that our consumer society exists because of natural selection. The amount of choice on offer today has grown exponentially over the last 30 years...to the point we all know what ‘choice overload’ feels like.

So for Episode 31 : Unnatural Selection, we ponder what if we subvert our DNA, and change the plot? Maybe it’s time we teach ourselves to feel satisfied instead.

Of the 630,000 podcasts to choose from, thank you for choosing Pondercast!
