Today, Winnipeg’s Living Hour shares "Hallboy", the third single from their upcoming album, Softer Faces. Of the song, Stereogum says “Sam Sarty’s lead vocals graze atop a celestial wash of guitar strums, steady percussion, and swelling horns. It’s a melancholic, introspective ballad that ascends to a cathartic climax — a tantalizing hint of what’s to come, considering it’s the first track on the album.”

The band is in the middle of a winter / spring North American tour that includes a stop at SXSW and ends with a return home to Winnipeg in March. See full dates below.

Everything about Winnipeg’s Living Hour has been expanding since their humble basement beginnings in 2015. What started with dreamy love songs inspired by the cinematic sky of their hometown has transformed into even more sprawling and expansive expressions on their latest effort, Softer Faces due March 1, 2019 via Kanine Records.

What started as a quartet is now a quintet, though still led by the smoky, ethereal lead vocals of Sam Sarty (vocals, trombone, keyboard), who started singing in choirs at a young age. With her strong vocal backbone, musicians Gil Carroll (guitar), Adam Soloway (guitar, vocals), Alex Chochinov (drums, trumpet, organelle), and Brett Ticzon (bass, vocals) are able to shine. Three voices, guitar, trombone, brushed percussion, and boundless effects sees Living Hour pulling from many genres to create their own sonically diverse and unique vibe.

Softer Faces follows up to their highly-praised 2016 S/T debut, featuring haunting, ethereal vocals accompanied by lush, expansive instrumentation. The album was produced by Kurt Feldman (The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Chairlift, DIIV, Dum Dum Girls) in Living Hour’s hometown and mixed by Jarvis Taveniere (Real Estate, Woods, Blouse, Widowspeak) at Thump Studios in Brooklyn.

Known for their mesmerizing and deeply-moving live show, Living Hour has toured Europe, the UK and North America. Their performance captures the dreamy, emotional power of the band’s recordings, creating a mesmerizing, unforgettable, cathartic, and deeply moving live music experience. Sarty finds that, "Sometimes people are a little turned off and not living in the now or being present. I find that when you perform, it's one of the most present moments that you can be in. You're living in the hour."

Last month, Wintersleep shared the throbbing, disco-noir romp “Beneficiary” from their upcoming, highly anticipated, new LP. Due out March 29 via Dine Alone Records their seventh full-length record, In the Land Of, has already been marked as one of the most anticipated records of 2019 by Exclaim! and CBC Music. Today, the band have partnered with YouTube for a new ‘In-Studio Session’ of “Beneficiary”, a track that details the genocide of Indigenous peoples and our modern relationship to it.

‘Drive to work all day, try to sleep at night / Beneficiary of a genocide’ vocalist Paul Murphy sings. The lyrics borrow from Australian writer Peter Carey, who in an interview last year asserted, “You wake up in the morning and you are the beneficiary of a genocide.” “As a Canadian, I feel a real connection to that sentiment,” says Murphy. “It really encapsulates the idea of someone historically removed from these atrocities but who nonetheless benefits, and has to come to terms with and find ways to acknowledge and take on a certain responsibility in making it right.

The song really isn’t trying to solve anything or trying to be this grand manifesto. It’s more a personal reckoning as an individual, who doesn’t want to be passive and therefore part of the continuing problem. Maybe it’s this first part of the equation that is central to the song- just the acknowledgment of there being a wrong that we need to keep in mind and continue to address.

In Canada there’s a real danger that the implementation of the truth and reconciliation commissions recommendations will end up as nothing but lip service. The report came out a few years ago but we are not seeing any concrete initiatives taking form that will really make a difference in the present and into the future for First Nations communities. On the contrary, with the pipeline controversies out west we see further manifestation of colonial attitudes towards the indigenous communities.”

NEW LP, THE SHAPE OF YOUR NAME, DUE APRIL 5 VIA NEXT DOOR RECORDS, THE NEW LABEL FROM OUTSIDE MUSIC

Last month, celebrated Toronto songwriter Charlotte Cornfield announced her upcoming third full-length LP, The Shape Of Your Name, and shared the album’s first single, “Andrew”. Today, she is sharing the new Southern Souls live video for the track.

Cornfield says “Andrew” could be “a song to a friend or a romantic partner but at its core it’s note to self, a reminder to step back and look at the bigger picture instead of dwelling on the minutia. We all have friends who we want to shake sometimes because their priorities feel out of whack, but on the flip side of that sometimes we’re that friend who needs shaking. When things get messy and absurd it helps be able to laugh at yourself, to laugh with someone, to shake it off and move forward.”

Set to arrive April 5 via Outside Music’s new imprint Next Door Records, The Shape Of Your Name has a more honed studio sound than her scrappier 2016 release Future Snowbird, and for good reason: it was recorded in 5 different sessions over the course of 3 years. The songs are her strongest and most striking to date - contemplative and contemporary, funny and heart-wrenching - and they’ve got that stuck-in-your-head-for-days quality that Cornfield is known for. The Shape Of Your Name features a star-studded cast of collaborators including (but not limited to) Grammy-winning engineer Shawn Everett, Broken Social Scene members Brendan Canning, Kevin Drew, and Charles Spearin, and Montreal songwriter Leif Vollebekk.

“My initial intention wasn’t to make a record at all,” Charlotte muses. “The whole thing kind of happened by accident. I went to The Banff Centre to do a residency and came out with these recordings that I knew I wanted to use for something but wasn’t sure what.” She brought the unfinished songs to her former roommate Nigel Ward in Montreal. “He fell into the producer role seamlessly. We took it slow and just tried things for a while until the vision settled in. There was no rush. It was freeing, and it gave the songs a lot of breathing room to develop.”

For the past four years Cornfield has been booking and managing Burdock Music Hall, a small venue in the west end of Toronto. The job has offered her stability and a strong sense of place in Toronto’s bursting-at-the-gills music community. She’s also an in-demand drummer and side musician, and has worked closely with Tim Darcy of Ought, Molly Burch, Adrian Underhill, and members of Lake Street Dive. She has toured extensively in North America and Europe and has supported a huge range of artists including Broken Social Scene, Anais Mitchell, Daniel Romano, and Sam Amidon.
