This past year has been an important one for Bernice, the diverse collective of Toronto based musicians. Their debut LP on Arts & Crafts, Puff LP : In the air without a shape was nominated for the Polaris Music Prize and the band just returned from a national tour supporting the record.

Outside of Bernice, the band members are active in an array of other multi-faceted projects including their duties as active members of Bahamas, Owen Pallett, Leif Vollebekk, and DIANA. Lead vocalist Robin Dann lent a hand to electronic producer Ryan Hemsworth and ambient jazz composer Joseph Shabason, while keyboardist Thom Gill contributed to new releases from Chaka Khan and a forthcoming album from The Mountain Goats. Gill and Dann, together with collective members Felicity Williams (vocals), Phil Melanson (percussion), and Dan Fortin (bass), have also backed other performers as a whole including Martha Wainwright and Devon Sproule.

Speaking to A.Side, Gill says “I like that there’s no main thing that I get lost in. I’d be happy if it was Bernice, but I don’t think it would ever be that. We all really thrive off of doing something different every day, it’s so fun.”

This week, the collective has paired with The Toronto Dance Theatre for Persefony Songs, a performance that riffs on images from Christopher House's acclaimed choreography Persephone’s Lunch (2001). Scored by Gill, the stage is set with a cast of twelve dancers and the six musicians of Bernice, which has already been called one the 10 Best Stage Shows To See In March 2019 by NOW Magazine.

“We usually make our own cracked version of pop music, but when Christopher (House) floated the words ‘fake mediaeval band’ early on in the brainstorming period we immediately identified with it and booked a few days up at my family farm,” says Dann. “Each of us brought personal selections, sacred and secular, from the canons of early musics. Through experimentation, improvisation, beat-making, sunset walks and a simple recording setup, we produced over an hour’s worth of demos. It was natural and fun.”

If you’re curious about the score to Persefony Songs, “ambientmozza” is available to stream today and the original score of demos can be found on a cassette for purchase in the lobby. The show runs March 5-9, more information is available at https://tdt.org/persefonysongs.

Recently, Bernice also stopped by The Strombo Show for a session that included a performance of the new track “Lone Swan” and a cover of Shawn Colvin’s “Steady On”. The songs premiered this past weekend and can be heard here.

Listed as one of the Best Of 2018 from Exclaim!, NOW Toronto, and Dominionated, Puff LP: In the air without a shape is the minimalist follow-up to 2017’s maximalist, Grammy Award-winner Shawn Everett-produced Puff EP. That five song collection garnered critical attention from from its first single “Glue”, which Stereogum lauded as both “gorgeous” and “surprising” and Pitchfork praised, noting that though Bernice’s enigmatic sound is difficult to categorize with traditional genre labels, “reinvention continues to be one of few constants in Bernice’s music, and they’re all the more interesting for it.” Puff LP cut, “He’s The Moon”, grabbed the attention of the New York Times who proclaimed it to be “a monument to ephemerality.”

STREAM/BUY PUFF: IN THE AIR WITHOUT A SHAPE

Puff LP: In the air without a shape is Bernice tackling pop minimalism; the stripped-down album touches on jazz as much as the enigmatic mix of pop, electronic, and R&B with their unique air of playfulness. Sitting between Enya, Julia Holter, Chairlift, and Deerhoof where clear vocal melodies fly kites over spare arrangements, Bernice’s new album attempts to mimic the playful intimacy of the band’s live show.

Recording the album to tape at Breakglass Studios in Montreal (with the exception of “He’s The Moon” and “Passenger Plane”), the band fell in love with the open spaciousness of the studio and how much it allowed them to connect whilst performing. “The vocal booths have sightlines to the band room through windows. We did live takes of each song to tape. We could look at each other, try different things, mostly we got each song in a few takes,” said Dann of the recording process.

Let’s Try The After - Vol 1 is out now. The EP follows 2017’s Hug of Thunder, which saw the collective exploring new ground while maintaining the awesome dynamics that have made Broken Social Scene one of the most beloved indie bands of the last fifteen years. "Such forceful beauty—a sense of indefinable, life-affirming ecstasy—is practically woven into Broken Social Scene’s DNA at this point," said Pitchfork. "And Let’s Try the After is proof that their genetic makeup is as complicatedly pure as ever." Last week it was announced that a forthcoming Broken Social Scene release is to be expected on Record Store Day. More details to be announced soon.

A NOTE FROM THE ARTIST ON LET’S TRY THE AFTER - VOL 1

The ceremony of dying generations without any guidelines for how to move forward makes
these times easy for the mirror wars to continue.
We can hide in the beauty of what has been stolen from us because somewhere there is mystery in not knowing.
How can the ruined survive without a back up plan?
Let’s try the after.

MEDIATIONS, ACOUSTIC EP OUT SPRING 2019 VIA ARTS & CRAFTS

PERFORMING IN TORONTO MARCH 8 AT THE GARRISON

Yoke Lore has just released a new, stripped down version of his 2017 song "Beige", now titled “Beige (unburdened)”. "This song turned out to mean a lot of important things to people,” says Adrian Glavin (Yoke Lore). “In re-interpreting it, I wanted to clear out everything but the song itself, so that people to whom it means something can get a more refined picture of what the song means. Clear out the clutter, unburden yourself."

“Beige (unburdened)” leads the way for an acoustic EP titled Mediations, due out later this Spring via Arts & Crafts.

“A ‘yoke’ is something that holds things together. ‘Lore’ means a set of stories or a collection of ideas about an event, time, or culture,” explains Adrian Galvin, when asked about the meaning behind his musical moniker Yoke Lore. New York indie pop project Yoke Lore is the solo musical venture of Adrian Galvin, previously of Yellerkin and Walk the Moon. Yoke Lore layers the harmonies of Panda Bear, the soulful beats of M83, and the modern pop of Blackbird Blackbird to tell “the stories of how we are bound.” Galvin’s songs combine echoing waves of banjo, vocals, and percussion to create arresting pop music with tactile candor and conviction. Galvin continues, “I want to tell stories about how memories, relationships, apprehensions, and big dreams hold us together. I think that exploring universal experiences both emotional and spiritual are best conveyed through the potency of personal stories. And music wields a power to render the very personal, epic.”

After putting out three acclaimed EPs which gained him a loyal following— Far Shore (2016), Goodpain (2017), and Absolutes (2018) — 2019’s Meditations strips several of Galvin’s familiar songs to their core by trading the usual electronic elements for arrangements of piano, horns, and strings. “In re-interpreting it, I wanted to clear out everything but the song itself, so that people to whom it means something can glean  a more refined experience of the song itself. Clear out the clutter, unburden yourself,” Galvin explains of “Beige (unburdened),” the reimagined version of his song “Beige” from the Goodpain EP. In addition to these re-interpretations, listeners will also find two new studio songs on the new Meditations EP.

2017, the year the Goodpain EP was released, was a turning point for Yoke Lore. His stand-out single “Goodpain” roused fans old and new — including Spotify, who invited Galvin to their New York City studio to record an acoustic version of the track, as well as two covers for his Spotify Singles: “Last Christmas” by Wham! and “Truly Madly Deeply” by Savage Garden. His holiday song graced Spotify’s Holiday Singles playlist alongside covers by Demi Lovato, Sam Smith, and Miley Cyrus. Yoke Lore also found an unexpected new fan in popstar Taylor Swift, who added his cover of “Truly Madly Deeply” to her “Songs Taylor Loves” Spotify playlist in 2018.

Three years of non-stop touring (supporting acts like Bastille, LP, Frenship, Overcoats, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and Aquilo) and playing festivals worldwide (SXSW, The Great Escape, Field Trip, Billboard Hot 100) led to Yoke Lore’s first US headline tours, selling out shows all over the country. In 2019, Yoke Lore will make appearances at BottleRock Napa Valley and Firefly Festival, following an east coast headline run and European dates with Highasakite.
