Art rock duo In The Valley Below has announced their sophomore full-length album and its motion picture companion, The Pink Chateau, will be arriving April 26 on Arts & Crafts - sharing their new Dave Sitek (TV on the Radio) produced single, “Rise” today, along with a trailer from the feature film.

For In The Valley Below’s Angela Gail and Jeffrey Jacobs, hardship and passion are two sides of the same coin, and romance is the only defense against a world gone mad. Almost giving up on a music career when Angela found out she was pregnant, they emerged in 2014 with a hit single, “Peaches” off their debut album The Belt. Angela and Jeffrey were swept up quickly into an unexpected whirlwind… a record deal with Capitol Records, invitations to perform on Letterman and Conan, remixes by Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke and Passion Pit, tours with White Lies and the Cold War Kids, and festival dates from Austin City Limits to Reading & Leeds. After living on the road for several years, with child, bags were packed in LA and shipped to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where a house was bought and a basement studio created.

Holing up last winter in their home studio, the resultant album, The Pink Chateau puts lie to our preconceived notions of how environment influences music. There’s a tendency to conflate an artist’s sound with their surrounding geography—be it the sun-dappled serenity of ‘70s Laurel Canyon folk-rock or the industrial pallor of Manchester post-punk. But The Pink Chateau is proof you can make sexy, urbane, tropical pop music in a Michigan basement in the dead of winter. When the duo invite you to ‘drink champagne in the pink chateau’ on the album’s seductively funky title track, the message is clear: paradise is wherever you want it to be.

The Pink Chateau film is the story of a young woman who follows a beautiful stranger into the countryside. What unfolds is a series of sensual and intimate tales in the form of a silent film set to In The Valley Below’s new album. The film was written and co-directed by Gail, and filmed in and around a palatial estate in rural Michigan. A dreamlike diorama of interconnected musical vignettes inspired by vintage French erotica and the faded colors of 1970s films, each song on the record serves as a portal through which the film’s enigmatic female protagonist confronts her most deep-seated desires. “It’s a story of sexual discovery and freedom from taboo,” Gail explains. “It’s a fantasy of an inviting place where female sexuality is a beautiful curiosity and not a shameful secret. Free from the story of the woman being a slut or victim if she is sexual.”

The idea to make a film for the album came from novelist / film director and head of Bright Antenna, Tiffanie Debartolo, who gave Angela the full freedom and confidence to write and direct the film. Angela adds, “I had previously directed music videos, but the logistics of organizing a feature film shoot were new to me. I brought on a filmmaker friend and colleague, Marcos Efron, to team up with and help me take this from vision to reality. It was also important for us to be inclusive with our cast and crew. We made every effort to include women, persons of color, and LGBTQ. I feel a diverse group brings a much richer atmosphere on set and on screen.”

In The Valley Below will take the sonic and visual experience out on the road in April. Broadcast over headphones, guests will experience a fully immersive audio and visual experience as the band performs the album / score live in theaters in front of the movie at Alamo Drafthouses across the U.S. Full tour dates can be found below. You can currently find In The Valley Below on the road supporting Albert Hammond Jr. on the West Coast thru March 8 in Los Angeles.

Today, Rich Aucoin is releasing his latest single “The Mind”, lifted from his anticipated third full-length album Release slated to drop on May 17 via Haven Sounds. “The Mind” sees Aucoin channel his electronic music production skills in full force as this pulsating instrumental track manages to create an emotional flow of sounds that is sure to provoke a roaring response from any listener. As this slow building track progresses, a new layer is added after each section, culminating in the explosive and euphoric finale. Textured soundscapes and ethereal vocal samples ensures this track as a staple of Release as Rich Aucoin proves there’s no genre he can’t shine in.

Speaking about the instrumental track “The Mind”, Aucoin explains, “This track is about the mind and therefore has no lyrics. Musically, this song has two drum sets on it. The main kit is played by Jeremy Malvin (aka Chrome Sparks) and the second is carried over from the Release session by Broken Social Scene’s Justin Peroff. Ben Talmi played the very rare Therevox slide theremin on the track down at his Virtue & Vice studio in Brooklyn. While Jenn Grant was recorded by Daniel Ledwell at his Echo Lake studio in Nova Scotia. The vocal melody seamlessly switches from male to female vocals with Jenn and my voices being the samples.”

Produced by Aucoin and drummer Joel Waddell, Release was inspired by a wide range of music such as David Bowie, Holly Herndon, Fatboy Slim, Björk, John Lennon, Future Islands, Caribou and Chic just to name a few. These influences are evident in his music, as his diverse sound could be compared to a mix of MGMT, Beck, Arcade Fire, Spoon, and M83 all the while still maintaining his own unique blend of organic and synthetic instrumentation. His third album, Release, sees Aucoin grapple with the concept of mortality by using Alice in Wonderland (1951) as a metaphor for the journey. Release can be played as alternate soundtrack along to the film similar to Aucoin’s earlier LP Ephemeral and The Little Prince.

Aucoin’s music has seen acclaim across the board with previous releases, We’re All Dying To Live and Ephemeral, long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize. The music video forBrian Wilson is A.L.I.V.E.” won the Prism Prize, which he’s also been shortlisted for this year for “The Middle”.

Nominated for ten East Coast Music Awards including Album, Song, and Fan Choice Entertainer of the Year, with more than 2 million streams, Rich Aucoin has built a reputation for his energetic live shows performing his music written in sync to old movies in the same manner as Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon with The Wizard of Oz. Using projections to these films, he has brought his interactive performance to stages at Osheaga, The Great Escape, Les Eurockéennes, Les Vielles Charrues, Berlin Music Festival, Montreal International Jazz Festival, Hangout Music Festival, Art Basel Miami, Luminato Art Festival, Iceland Airwaves, SXSW, Pop Montreal and more.

Born, raised, and currently based in Halifax, Rich Aucoin has been fully immersed in music ever since he can remember, learning how to play almost any instrument he could get his hands on while also teaching himself production and home-recording. A philanthropist at heart, Aucoin has raised money for several charities with his music. He has cycled coast to coast twice for both Childhood Cancer Canada and The Canadian Mental Health Association/Mental Health America; cycling to each show. He has also crossed Canada for the Canadian Heart & Stroke Foundation running a series of half-marathons.
