In 1999, Halifax rock band Thrush Hermit released their final album, Clayton Park. Well-regarded upon release for its ambitious alchemy of anthemic hooks and 70s-inspired riffage, the album has since gained a reputation as a classic of its era.

To celebrate Clayton Park’s twenty-year anniversary, the album will be issued for the first time as a gatefold double-vinyl package via New Scotland Records on Record Store Day and will be made available on streaming services on April 17. The announcement came last week from Joel Plaskett during an interview on The Strombo Show.

Coinciding with this release, original members Rob Benvie, Cliff Gibb, Ian McGettigan, and Joel Plaskett will be briefly reforming for a limited run of shows in October 2019. For a band renowned for its raucous live performances, the anniversary is an occasion of both nostalgic reminiscence and excitement in rekindling its formidable rock power one more time.

“My forearms feel very limber,” McGettigan says. “Oh so very limber.”

Today, Yoke Lore releases his euphoric new single “Chin Up”. The New York indie pop project Yoke Lore is the solo musical venture of Adrian Galvin, previously of Yellerkin and Walk the Moon. The brand new track is taken from his forthcoming Meditations EP set for release on May 31 via Arts & Crafts.

Speaking about “Chin Up” Galvin explains, “This song is about fighting fire with love. My little brother was a huge pain in the ass growing up. He would throw these awful tantrums, and I would always want my parents to punish him and throw him in his room and ground him or something, but they never did. They always just tried to listen and comfort him. They told me all you can do in the face of anger is to hit it with compassion, which usually peels away the aggression to reveal a vulnerability. This song is not about my brother who, by the way, turned out very well-adjusted, but it is about the struggle of learning to tamper your reactivity and volatility. Learning to forgive at the drop of a hat. It's a skill I aspire to master.”

The accompanying video to “Chin Up”, shot in the depths of winter in Alaska, is sparse and bleak in comparison to the track’s joyous nature. Speaking about the video he explains, “This video is about a cycle of learning that we all go through. I paint a really tactile picture, but an allegory is only as strong as its commitment. We get thrown around by our relationships. We go through times of being taken care of and times of being mistreated, and even if we end up back where we started, we gain something along the way. Be that an awareness or a skill or an important memory, we always have the ability to grow from our movement, and each relationship offers us a beautiful opportunity to learn something new about ourselves.”

After putting out three acclaimed EPs which gained him a loyal following— Far Shore (2016), Goodpain (2017), and Absolutes (2018) — 2019’s Meditations EP strips several of Galvin’s familiar songs to their core by trading the usual electronic elements for arrangements of piano, horns, and strings. In addition to these re- interpretations, listeners will also find two new studio songs on the new Meditations EP.

Yoke Lore layers the harmonies of Panda Bear, the soulful beats of M83, and the modern pop of Blackbird Blackbird to tell “the stories of how we are bound.” Galvin’s songs start with the folksy timbre of a banjo and add echoing waves of vocals and percussion to create unforgettable pop music with tactile sincerity and conviction. Since 2016, he has released 3 EP’s and a handful of singles, including a cover of Savage Garden’s “Truly Madly Deeply” that Taylor Swift added to her “Songs Taylor Loves” playlist.

Three years of non-stop touring (supporting acts like Bastille, LP, Frenship, Overcoats, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and Aquilo) and playing festivals worldwide (SXSW, The Great Escape, Field Trip, Billboard Hot 100) led to Yoke Lore’s first US headline tours, selling out shows all over the country. He continues on the road this Spring with full tour dates listed below.

“Wish we could say this was the first time we nearly got hyperthermia for a Close Talker video, but that would be a lie,” says Chris Morien of the new video for “Half Past Nine” which NPR calls a moody, sweetly impeccable gem”. “We seem to have made it a habit to shoot videos in the freezing cold and this video, although beautiful, was borderline foolish.” Captured by Ben Giesbrecht, the video was filmed on the Vancouver Island where the band had been surfing the day before. “The beach was vacant because it was too cold for the locals, so we thought we’d seize the moment and film a video that is cyclical in nature, beginning and ending in the freezing cold ocean. The video includes themes of chasing moments or feelings from the past, only to recognize that you’ll always be chasing if you don’t stop and enjoy the simple and often overlooked beauty around you.”

“Half Past Nine”, the first new music from Saskatoon’s Close Talker single since the release of Lens (2017), marks a new chapter for the band. The three members, Will Quiring, Matthew Kopperud, and Chris Morien, leaned into the trust and foundation built over many years of friendship to pursue a song that would be sustainable. At its core, the song is laced with a quiet confidence that invites the listener dig in, finding new appreciation with each spin. It’s a song the band wrote for themselves, about a night they will never forget, in hopes that the song would carry the same meaning in ten years, as it does today.

Close Talker, now more than ever, is interested in music that is timeless – music that won’t force the listener into feeling a certain way. To achieve this, the band approached “Half Past Nine” following a code of instincts and honesty, including a list of ten commandments by which each decision was filtered through. The song paves the way for more new music in the near future and is a testament to the band’s integrity and desire to produce music that is original and pure.

Beyond Close Talker’s recordings and videos, the music comes to life with the band’s iconic live show, leaving audiences around the world satisfied, having left all inhibitions behind. Having recently completed a successful run to SXSW, Close Talker will be on the road this summer in North America and Europe. Current tour dates can be found below with more dates to be announced shortly.
