Today, Saskatoon’s Close Talker announce their upcoming LP, How Do We Stay Here?, out August 30 via Slow Weather. In so many ways How Do We Stay Here? marks a new chapter for the band. The three members leaned into the trust and foundation built over countless years of friendship to pursue a record that would be sustainable and timeless for them. Choosing to self-produce allowed the band to hold this album close to their chest while it developed organically over the course of 2018 at RMS Labs in Regina, SK. At its core, the album is laced with a quiet confidence that invites the listener to dig in, finding new appreciation with each spin.

Leading the way is album single, “The Change It Brings”, a song about the universal currency of time. “No matter what the situation, everyone is shaped by time,” says the band. “It can change us for the worse, or for the better, but at one point or another, all of us will have to face the force of time. This song, along with our new album, is us trying to wrestle with time. It conveys trying to learn from our experiences, trying to keep perspective, trying to progress in this weird world, and sometimes trying not to progress at all; to sit in a moment and soak it in for all it has to offer before it becomes nothing more than a memory. How Do We Stay Here? is us navigating through the past two years, to both the good times and the bad that shaped who we are, and learning how to learn from them.”

The Change It Brings From the forthcoming record 'How Do We Stay Here?' to be released August 30, 2019. Written and Performed by Close Talker Under Exclusive Rights to Slow Weather Music and Sinnbus. http://closetalker.ca/ https://ffm.to/thechangeitbrings

Close Talker, now more than ever, is interested in music that is timeless - music that won’t force the listener into feeling a certain way. To achieve this, the band approached each song following a code of instincts and honesty, including a list of ten commandments by which all decisions were filtered through. Some were practical like: “Start with what you know” while others were more attitude checks or wholistic like: “No ego” All catering to the music coming first. How Do We Stay Here? is a testament to the band’s integrity and a desire to produce music that is original and pure. It is an album the band wrote for themselves, in hopes that the songs would carry the same vigor and meaning in ten years, as they do today.

Beyond Close Talker’s recordings and videos, the music comes alive with the band’s iconic live show, leaving audiences around the world satisfied, having left all inhibitions behind. Recently, the band completed a successful run to SXSW and will now be on the road this summer in North America and Europe. Current tour dates can be found below with more dates to be announced shortly.

Toronto's Absolutely Free released their self-titled debut LP in 2014, an album of "prog pop mini-suites" (Pitchfork) that earned high praise from outlets like Pitchfork, Noisey, Rolling Stone, BrooklynVegan and Stereogum, received a nomination for the 2015 Polaris Music Prize, and saw the band tour extensively with artists like Alvvays and Preoccupations. Composed of Moshe Fisher-Rozenberg, Michael Claxton, and Matt King - three musicians with varied, multi-disciplinary backgrounds in music, film and visual arts - the band members have been engaged in a broad collection of commissioned projects but have remained mostly quiet as a unit since their debut's release.

Last November, Absolutely Free hinted at what they've been up to with a one-off single called "Still Life," a "subtly off-kilter" (Stereogum) track produced by Jorge Elbrecht (Ariel Pink, Japanese Breakfast, Tamaryn). Today, the band has formalized its return with the premiere of a new collaboration with U.S. Girls entitled "Currency", a preview of their forthcoming Geneva Freeport 12”, mixed by revered Toronto experimental music auteur Sandro Perri, out June 20 on Idée Fixe. "Currency" features U.S. Girls' Meg Remy taking lead vocals over a nervy post-punk shuffle that gradually blossoms into a dense cosmic disco track. "Currency" is out digitally on May 1 in a two-track bundle and includes an Extended Mix.

In conversation with The FADER, King talks about working with Remy, expanding on the lyrical content of "Currency", and explaining how the song's lyrics – about acknowledging privilege and social currency – are mirrored by the collaborative vocal arrangement:

Currency’s lyrics consider how social frameworks like gender performance are built. As a band, we are learning to acknowledge the privilege and power we personally gain from systems such as patriarchy, and are feeling conflicted about how to best use this social capital. We have noticed a lot of white male reactions to this era of intersectional sensitivity have been to stay out of the conversation completely, but this results in music that tends to just operate as "music", and that’s sort of it. We have never been a band who is interested in just making "music”, but also understand that social currency, built solely on statements of solidarity, become platitudes without meaningful action behind them. It's a difficult thing to navigate.

We know that any space we take up means another band doesn’t get to inhabit that space. This is one of the reasons we have taken so long to release new music; because we want to make sure we use whatever bandwidth we are given to share something that is deeply considered and worth paying attention to. Also, we've been learning to work more collaboratively, to share the space that we do occupy with others. We were inspired by the Talking Heads album, Remain In Light, when we wrote this record and in this song particularly, we wanted to subvert their reference to the “front-man with female back-up singers” trope. We are so grateful to Meg from U.S. Girls for her contribution and unwavering support for this project, as we are so inspired by her work and ethics.

In support of the release, Absolutely Free will be performing select dates throughout the summer. Full details can be found below.

Flute, congas, bass, drums, guitar and clavinet; this unconventional arrangement of instruments intertwine to form the debut album by Badge Époque Ensemble - a group of creative improvisers assembled to perform new, largely instrumental compositions by Maximilian ‘Twig’ Turnbull (formerly Slim Twig).

Today, the ensemble are sharing “Undressed In Solitude”, which features the otherworldly RnB of guest vocalist James Baley, from their upcoming self-titled debut, out June 7 via Telephone Explosion. Over 11 simmering minutes, the track defies the contemporary fixations of automated music to convincingly combine sensual and cerebral textures. While it may call to mind an improbable collision between psych-era Stevie Wonder and the whimsically dark, Fantastic Planet score, it is clear that we are operating in a post Wu-Tang paradigm.

The song “explores the notion of personhood as a daily application,” Turnbull tells Exclaim!. “What remains if misplaced or misapplied? How are we altered in sleep? Where is the singer if he is silent for most of a song? If an identity is misplaced, the only respite may be a rhythm to follow.”

Badge employs an eclectic cast of characters from the Toronto underground music scene, whose combined experience would take pages to spell out. It includes stints accompanying songwriters Andy Shauf and Marker Starling, outfitting heavies Blood Ceremony and Biblical, and respective careers spent gigging Django-jazz and the classical canon. Badge’s distinctive sound arises from the diversity of these musical exploits, creating a palpable chemistry well captured on the live-tracked songs that form the group’s self-titled debut.

Part of this crucial chemistry can be attributed to the fact that four of the six players in the Ensemble have been at the core of the live U.S. Girls band, a group that has scorched stages internationally over the past year and was hailed by Paste Magazine as the best live band of 2018.

Since 2015, when Turnbull released his final record as Slim Twig for DFA, he has largely concentrated his efforts as a producer and writer on the U.S. Girls project, making contributions to the theatrical rock outfit Darlene Shrugg, and the psychedelic jazz-funk collective The Cosmic Range. Badge’s set of songs is yet another 180-degree turn for an increasingly collective-minded bandleader who is singularly disdainful of any genre orthodoxy.

The record is a collection of densely packed grooves, arranged by committee. The blocky beats and bit- crushed landscapes of the record at large make for tactile productions (courtesy of a collaboration among producers Steve Chahley, Tony Price, and Twig) that can’t be comfortably ascribed to any one particular era of music making. If a crate of library, tropicalia, prog, and electric jazz records were flattened into a single 12” and then fed into a sampler, we might approximate the process. Instrumental hip hop by reverse osmosis, a musical perspective where Madlib’s jazz excursions carry as much weight as his sample-laced productions.

Although the group has largely maintained an aura of obscurity, with little online presence to date, their reputation as a live group is burgeoning. They were selected to tour across Canada to support the iconic Bill Callahan at the end of 2018, and Badge will make select appearances following the release of their debut album this spring. Fans of progressive, instrumental music would do well to take note.

Badge Époque Ensemble is:
