Today, Toronto's Absolutely Free are sharing a video loop their latest single, "Geneva Freeport" – the title track from their upcoming EP coming out on Ideé Fixe on June 20. Following the first single, "Currency" featuring U.S. Girls, which earned support from outlets like Fader, Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan and more, "Geneva Freeport" is retro-synthetic new-wave with a rhythmic, melodic urgency that nods to Talking Heads, The Clash, Terry Riley, and William Onyeabor. The video by Julie Reich (aka Bile Sister) is a cyclical exploration of a 3D art gallery space housing abstract artifacts and an obscured basement of paintings, commentary on the EP’s themes of the commodification of artwork.

An exercise in tension, from its rumbling slow build-up to its blistering chorus – which subverts the lyric popularized by Louis Armstrong, “And I think to myself, what a wonderful world” – "Geneva Freeport" details an absurd fantasy about taking a holiday to one of the world’s most notorious high security art storage facilities. The band says:

"Through fantasy and the starkest of realities, this song brings to question the process in which economic value is prescribed to cultural artifacts, how that value is exploited through storing them in high security storage facilities (like the Geneva Freeport) to avoid paying taxes, and how it all seems so antithetical to why most artists create their work in the first place."

Mixed by experimental music auteur Sandro Perri, and featuring contributions from Meg Remy of U.S. Girls and Carl Didur of Zacht Automaat, Geneva Freeport is Absolutely Free’s first release since their 2014 Polaris Music Prize nominated debut record, and is a deeply considered collection of songs that proves that good things come to those who wait. Across its twenty minutes, the Toronto psychedelic trio creates a prismatic and pointed view of the binaries that exist in our culture, and reflects on the absurdity of polarized ideological perspectives.

The band will mark the release with a special show at Toronto’s Dance Cave on June 20, as well as summer appearances at Luminato, OFF Festival, Aga Khan Museum, Crystal Lake Sound and more.

“Black Mountain sounds as mighty as ever..."Licensed to Drive" is what you want in the 8-track cassette player when you're bombing through the Nevada desert in a fully restored El Camino with a complete aversion to anything with sleeves.” - The Georgia Straight

“Black Mountain puts the pedal to the metal with Destroyer” - Vancouver Sun

“Black Mountain have always been great at doing all the things that bongwater-gargling riff-monsters should be good at doing. They have titanic canyon-spanning hooks. They’ve got enough dynamic range to switch their style up a few times within the space of a single song...On Destroyer, all of that is in very clear evidence. It’s enough to fill up your soul.” - Stereogum

PRAISE FOR BLACK MOUNTAIN

“...a loose, trippy and freewheel-burning journey through outer (and inner) space, toggling between shape-shifting epics and hypnotic riff-fuelled megajams.” - Tinnitist

“Imagine a ridiculous Ed "Big Daddy" Roth creation with jutting fins, go-faster stripes, massive back tires scorching smoke, a triple-intake blower erupting through the hood, and an oversized eight-ball shifter sticking through the roof where some maniacal speed mutant tweaks with his tongue flapping in the breeze, blistering down the highway towards a knife fight between hair metal, punk and stoner rock. That is the feeling this album evokes.” - Exclaim!

“[Destroyer] finds the Canadian outfit channeling the exhilarating, thrill-seeking spirit often associated with adolescence.- Consequence of Sound

“Destroyer, the latest treasure from Canadian psych rock outfit Black Mountain, a heavy, crunchy, head-banging good time with eight tracks to throw the sign of the horns to.” - Paste

"Destroyer has arrived just in time to quench your summertime blues and transport you to their silver mothership in the sky" - Beatroute

“They’ve stuffed Destroyer full of the kind of anthems that rattle the windows while hotboxed teens park in the back lot. They find the sweet spot between volume and spaced synths that pair well with lying on the hood staring at the stars and wishing away the last year of high school so that you can finally be free of this damn town.” - Raven Sings The Blues

YOKE LORE RELEASES MEDITATIONS ACOUSTIC EP TODAY

MEDITATIONS EP OUT TODAY VIA ARTS & CRAFTS

NORTH AMERICAN TOUR DATES BEGIN SEPTEMBER 28

Having released the glorious singles “Safe and Sound” and “Chin Up” in recent months, New York indie pop project Yoke Lore releases his luminous Meditations EP today, June 14 through Arts & Crafts.

BUY / STREAM MEDITATIONS HERE

Yoke Lore is the solo musical venture of Adrian Galvin, previously of Yellerkin and Walk the Moon. After putting out three acclaimed EPs which gained him a loyal following— Far Shore (2016), Goodpain (2017), and Absolutes (2018) — 2019’s Meditations strips several of Galvin’s familiar songs to their core by trading the usual electronic elements for arrangements of piano, horns, and strings. “In re-interpreting it, I wanted to clear out everything but the song itself, so that people to whom it means something can glean a more refined experience of the song itself. Clear out the clutter, unburden yourself,” Galvin explains of “Beige (unburdened)”, the reimagined version of his song “Beige” from the Goodpain EP. In addition to these re-interpretations, listeners will also find Galvin’s two latest singles “Safe and Sound” and “Chin Up” to complete the Meditations EP.

Three years of non-stop touring (supporting acts like Bastille, LP, Frenship, Overcoats, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and Aquilo) and playing festivals worldwide (SXSW, The Great Escape, Field Trip, Billboard Hot 100) led to Yoke Lore’s first US headline tours, selling out shows all over the country. In 2019, Yoke Lore will make appearances at BottleRock Napa Valley, Firefly Festival (Dover) and Bushstock (London), following an east coast headline run. He recently announced his debut UK headline shows taking place in London, Manchester and Leeds in June 2019.

Yoke Lore layers the harmonies of Panda Bear, the soulful beats of M83, and the modern pop of Blackbird Blackbird to tell “the stories of how we are bound.” Galvin’s songs start with the folksy timbre of a banjo and add echoing waves of vocals and percussion to create unforgettable pop music with tactile sincerity and conviction. Since 2016, he has released 3 EP’s and a handful of singles, including a cover of Savage Garden’s “Truly Madly Deeply” that Taylor Swift added to her “Songs Taylor Loves” playlist.
