The hardest thing to say is how you feel because then it becomes real. While Micah Erenberg knows the risk in wearing your heart on your sleeve, the 26-year-old understands the importance of a shared experience. One that can make someone feel brighter, understood, less alone. Love Is Gonna Find You is the songwriter’s highly anticipated second album, set to be released on October 4 via Sleepless Records. In 2019, Micah Erenberg is lifting his listeners into a sphere of delicate fulfillment, painting loneliness as a universal craving for human connection over his narratives of getting sober, rain soaked mornings and searching for something bigger than ourselves.

Today, the Manitoban songwriter is sharing the new ASMR inspired video for “Just Who I Am” captured by Matt Williams in a hotel during a flight delay. “I’m glad Micah’s plane was delayed and we got to ride out the nor’easter making this disgusting video,” says Williams. “I never want to be forced to hear an entire juicy roast chicken get dropped on a hotel room table ever again. We must have done it a dozen times. The slap of its wet, naked self hitting that cheap wood is engraved on my brain now.”

On the song Erenberg says, “This tune is pretty much verbatim quotes from a text conversation I had with my friend Ellen. We were talking about our lives as artists and about how it’s hard not constantly reconsider everything that you’re doing. I hope this song can speak to folks who are struggling with self worth or worth of their work. It’s important to know that you’re never alone. We’re all struggling and we’re all making it work, together.

Also released today, is album cut “Sunspill”, a track that Erenberg wrote with Jicah in 2013. “They recorded a version of it back then and I kinda forgot about it until several years later when I decided to make a version of my own,” he says. “Over the years this song has changed as much in sound as it has in meaning to me. I’m really happy this version made it onto the album and I hope that it can mean something special to you, too.”

MORE ABOUT LOVE IS GONNA FIND YOU

Growing up in the very rural Manitoba, Erenberg gravitated towards music as a curious endeavour around the age of 9 when he first picked up a guitar. That soon turned into writing and recording and inevitably, tours followed and numerous band projects continued until, at the age of 20, he set out to do his own thing. Going it alone has allowed him to express an overlying message of love and positivity through his work and it’s on Love Is Gonna Find You that Erenberg has truly found his groove.

Lyrically, the album paints a scrambling collage of navigating the loss of love while also providing a rolling, self-effacing pep talk. With love, comes pain and Erenberg’s commentary on both simultaneously elevates the textures throughout. It’s a kaleidoscope of memories, merged together to push Erenberg out of the funk he’s found himself in to produce something ultimately positive and downright life-affirming. As he points out on opener, “Do It For Love”, live for the minute you came to this Earth and the minute you’ll leave, no matter how long those nights can feel.

Produced and recorded with Alexandre Bonenfant, the album was crafted in several studios between Toronto, Winnipeg, and Micah’s home town. Switching up the environments has manifested itself as a mirage of characters, ones that teeter on the soft focus of an acoustic guitar while others erupt into strange electronic soundscapes. There’s woozy harmonies, low croons and fervent choruses. Erenberg may revel in the gloom for a moment but it’s soon dispersed as the laugh of a friend echoes in between songs. It’s raw, it’s real and it’s full of heart.

Erenberg is an insatiably prolific songwriter. The process saw him having to sift through 80+ demos to make Love Is Gonna Find You – plus, those written during the actual recording process. The oldest song “Bored”, was written by Erenberg when he was 16. By selecting both old and new material, Love Is Gonna Find You captures the very specific feeling of memories that never quite leave, friends that seem to stick around and an overriding optimism despite the treacherous journey to make it to today. “This year I’m really turning my focusing my energy into getting my music into the hands of those who might need it,” Erenberg says. “I want to create a platform on which I can consistently release new music to the people who want to hear it. That’s the goal… if there are people out there who want to hear this kind of music, they deserve to have it.”

LITTLE SCREAM ANNOUNCES NEW LP, SHARES NEW VIDEO

Speed Queen marks the return of Little Scream (a.k.a. Laurel Sprengelmeyer). Her followup to 2016’s Cult Following arrives October 25 via Dine Alone Records is available to pre-order now. Today, CBC Music is sharing the lyric video for Speed Queen’s all-too-real opening song “Dear Leader”, featuring cameos from The National, Arcade Fire, Superchunk, Holly Miranda, Leif Vollebekk, Mélissa Laveaux, and more.

“This is a lyric video made up largely from crowd-sourced submissions from friends around the world, from São Paulo, Paris, and Barcelona to Des Moines, all shot on a phone,” says Sprengelmeyer. “Many artists are pictured, but many are people I encountered while working on the video with documentary filmmaker Shannon Walsh. She and I approached people on the street and heard many interesting stories along the way, from the native man from Bella Bella who told us about being told to “go back to where you came from” (he jumped and replied, “I’m here”), to a man paying homage to lost friends at the AIDS memorial at Sunset Beach in Vancouver, to a group of young people returning from a rally to support LGBTQIA rights.

Much of the protest footage was shot by Shannon herself while in Hong Kong during the Umbrella Movement protests of 2014.

I would like to use the launch of this video to raise awareness about the 1000 Cities initiative—something being spearheaded by musician and environmentalist Becky Foon (pictured in the video) and Jesse Paris Smith. It’s a simple concept with a powerful message: If 1000 cities around the world adopt Paris climate accord standards, the world can still meet its global emissions targets. The idea is not to just sign a petition, but to get involved in supporting and advocating for zero-emissions targets with specific timeline commitments in our own cities and communities. It’s a way of empowering all of us to be part of reversing climate change.”

MORE ON SPEED QUEEN

On her third album, Little Scream offers us a reflection on class and poverty in America. Speed Queen began as bits of prose written while touring her last album across North America – observing the slow entropy of the US, ruminating on her own low-income upbringing in a flyover state, and, as she says, “taking it all in from the privileged position of being a new Canadian.”

The title, which alludes to the opiate crisis, actually refers to a washing machine. Little Scream says, “When you’re struggling, nothing says you’ve made it more than getting your own washing machine. Speed Queen is about the dream of making it, and feeling desperately close but missing it.”

The album is gently accusatory. She doesn’t let herself or any of her listeners off the hook. In “Privileged Child”, she reminds wealthy people who like to adopt the style of the poor and working class that “poverty’s a feeling money just can’t buy.” On “Dear Leader,” she reminds those opposing migration that “when the waters rise, it’s gonna be you, Miami,” warning them that when they’re needing help, “…you will ask your God, but he’ll be busy getting risen, and the rich will be too busy buying stock in private prisons—that’s where they’ll send you for talking about socialism.” The biting commentary served with a sense of humor softens its presentation but doesn’t detract from its power. This is a theme throughout Speed Queen, where humor and warm heartedness prevail despite some of the darker subjects touched upon.

Montreal-based songwriter and guitarist Laurel Sprengelmeyer has been playing music under the moniker Little Scream since 2008. In 2011, she released The Golden Record, which Pitchfork dubbed “a stellar debut” and NPR called “an absolutely captivating record.” It was included in NPR’s Best Albums of 2011 list, and the New York Times evoked its “hints of the divine,” including Little Scream as one of the best new acts to follow at SXSW. Her second album Cult Following, which features guests including Sufjan Stevens, Mary Margaret O’Hara, and Sharon Van Etten, earned Little Scream new band of the week status from The Guardian and received five stars from Bust Magazine. Cult Following included the catchy Prince-inspired single “Love As A Weapon” which, according to the liner notes, she and her sister hoped would buy their mom, a cleaning woman in Illinois, “unlimited gift certificates to the Red Lobster.”

Since the release of Cult Following, Little Scream has stayed busy as a member of Richard Reed Parry’s Quiet River of Dust, touring with and co-writing songs from the albums Vol. 1: This Side of the River and Vol. 2: That Side of the River. A natural collaborator, she has appeared as a vocalist and/or guitarist on recordings for The National, The Barr Brothers, Will Butler, and Saltland, among others. She has appeared on two Red Hot compilations as well as charity singles to benefit the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, and Standing Rock.

Speed Queen release shows will be announced shortly.

IN YOUR HEAD EP OUT AUGUST 2 VIA NETTWERK RECORDS

Today, Montreal based Alt/Indie-Folk collective The Franklin Electric share their latest single “I’ve Been Here Before,” the second track off the upcoming In Your Head EP, out August 2, 2019. Premiering on Indie88, the track is about, “relating to everyday people falling apart, about hopelessness and protecting your defences, and always wanting more,” says frontman Jon Matte. The accompanying video was shot over a two day period in and around Los Angeles. Jon adds, “It was truly special to get to see so much in such a small period of time as I got to walk through so many different heavenly places from sunrise to sunset. I now know what the term SUPER BLOOM means.”

The JUNO-nominated group have also announced a European and Canadian tour that launches this fall. Starting on October 20th in Zurich, Switzerland, the 10 date European tour will take The Franklin Electric throughout Germany and into the UK, before heading to Canada for a handful of dates throughout Quebec. A full list of dates is below.

Since emerging in 2014 with their debut album This Is How I Let You Down, The Franklin Electric have logged nearly 400 shows, canvassing the world alongside everyone from Mumford & Sons and Ben Howard to Edward Sharpe and City and Colour. Along the way, 2017’s Blue Ceilings marked a major milestone. Not only did the record produce favorites such as “I Know The Feeling” and “Someone Just Like You,” but it also led to a nomination at the 2018 JUNO® awards in the category of Breakthrough Group of the Year. The latter experience set the stage for the forthcoming EP In Your Head. “The theme of the EP is the balance between vulnerability and holding on,” says Jon Matte. “You can’t be so openminded you never stand up for anything. This theme sets the stage for a beautiful realization to happen. I just make honest music for everyday ordinary people. This is what I’m feeling and going through. This is how I explore universal truths we all go through. I always want the art to reflect what’s going on with me.”

Stay tuned for more updates The Franklin Electric in the coming weeks.
