Today, Hamilton’s Ellevator are sharing their cover of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill”. The band has been playing the song live for a few years now but felt it was time to finally release a proper studio version.

“Kate Bush is a genius,” the band says. “That term gets used cheaply on lesser minds, but Kate’s the genuine article. She topped her first chart at 19, and in an era of young women’s voices being tightly managed by company men Kate remained an iconoclast. She was unafraid to tackle topics like murder, religion, incest and homosexuality in her work (not exactly the MO for pop stars of the day). ‘Running Up That Hill’ is as visceral and captivating now as the day it was released: the mark of a true auteur. We think it’s about the messy work of understanding each other’s pain across the deep lines of identity.”

Currently on tour in Western Canada and the U.S. supporting BANNERS, Ellevator will be making stops in Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver. Recently the band has also supported Amber Run, Our Lady Peace, Matthew Good, and Dear Rouge on the road and performed a stadium show with Cold War Kids, Bishop Briggs, and Arkells.

Led by the haunting and ethereal vocals of Nabi Sue Bersche, Ellevator strikes a balance between catchy indie rock bands of the early aughts (Metric, Yeah Yeah Yeah’s) at their best and radio rock hit-makers (Arkells, Sam Roberts). The band has been hard at work in the studio over the summer, including some sessions with Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie) and hope to have new music to share next year.

“I think the song of the year is “Ex-Lover” by Sam Weber. The guy’s a hell of a songwriter, great musician, great guitarist… he’s going to do big things” – Afie Jurvanen, Bahamas

“[Weber] is an expert tunesmith, brimming with addictive, adventurous and confident pieces. Infused with deep wit and wisdom, Weber’s output is truly impressive. His guitar work is also killer, full of nuance, soul and a truly unique voice.… We’ll be hearing a lot more from Weber in the coming years and, more than likely, decades” – Guitar Player

“Some guys can sing. Some guys can play guitar. Some guys can write songs. Some guys know their way around the recording studio. Then there are guys like Sam Weber.

Today marks the release of “Blackout”, the second single off of singer-songwriter Sam Weber’s upcoming third full-length, Everything Comes True, out October 25 via Sonic Unyon. The track is “a break-up song about feeling divided - between doing what feels right to me or what’s comfortable for someone else,” says Weber. “It’s about watching someone try and change who they are to make you happy. It’s about trying to have a deeper understanding of relationships and investing more – and about being afraid in relationships too.”

Expanding on the ambitious canvas of 2018’s New Agile Freedom EP, Everything Comes True is Weber’s most compelling release to date, one stacked with remarkable songs filled out by a remarkable range of talents whose gifts complement the artist's own considerable strengths. He reserves special thanks for L.A. producer Tyler Chester, who cared for the songs as if they were his own, remaining intensely mindful of the album's finer details as well as the fullness of its scope, despite a tight session window.

Industry insiders know Chester not just for his diverse production credits but also his work as a steady session hand on albums and tours by Joan Baez, Jackson Browne, Andrew Bird, Amy Helm, Hayes Carll, Christina Aguilera, and many others. The album’s stellar roster of personnel also includes Grammy-winning mastering engineer Gavin Lurssen, and Weber's longtime drummer/collaborator Marshall Wildman.

Weber boasts a relentless tour schedule, splitting most of his time between the road and the studio. He’ll be supporting labelmate Terra Lightfoot this fall before celebrating Everything Comes True with release shows in Toronto and Hamilton.

Last month, Reuben and the Dark, the spirited alt-folk outfit helmed by singer-songwriter Reuben Bullock, announced a new full-length album entitled un | love, out October 25 on Arts & Crafts. With that, the band released the first single “faultline” and the video, directed by Brock Mitchell, debuted last week. Today, Reuben and the Dark shares the new track “rising” – the melancholic but uplifting overture to un | love, with Reuben’s lonesome voice soon buoyed by exultant melodies.

Reuben explains how “rising” captures the spark of the new album:

“This is the first song on the album for a reason. It was the very first toe in the water... an early morning in Mexico… among the sounds of the jungle I started writing this song. As I was finishing, I could hear my bass player, Ian Jarvis, already carving out a sonic world in the makeshift studio we had made. This song was written with a cup of coffee and finished with a glass of mezcal. I took it from the sky. It was written and recorded within hours. It was the very beginning of what would become a deep dive into an ocean of songs - un | love. Recording for the sake of the song and nothing else. It is a journey. An exploration. I don’t think it even makes sense from a songwriting perspective, but it makes sense emotionally. It is waking up. It is looking out the window as scenery passes you by. It is the blink of an eye. An anthem of an open mind.”

The song captures life as it’s meant to be lived – in the moment. It is the past, present and future held close and let go all at once. The vast space and freewheeling pace of “rising” evokes the opposing forces of love and emptiness at play in un | love, at once free and constrained.

un | love is Reuben’s most honest and captivating album to date, opening a window into one of the most dramatic times in Bullock’s life. The spirited band’s third record – following 2018’s Arms of a Dream, and 2014’s debut Funeral Sky – tells Reuben’s story of endings and hope for the future. The forthcoming collection is a bare, cathartic exploration of life’s undeniable crossroads, and the fateful depths that await there. As Reuben sings on “rising”:

to fall in love
and blow away
come what may
my mind is made

Produced by Reuben and the Dark with Marcus Paquin (The National, Timber Timbre, Local Natives) and Kevin Drew (of Broken Social Scene), un | love evokes the raw emotion of the songs with anthemic, atmospheric sound. In comparison to the polished songs of Arms of a Dream, the new album shows a drastic turn in Reuben’s ease as a writer and freedom as a recording artist. His voice is at once unbridled and fallible. Through the dense imagery of his poetry shines a light shot straight from Reuben’s soul.

Reuben and the Dark hit the road this month with a run of dates in Canada and will embark on a Winter Tour in 2020 beginning February 8. Full dates can be round below. The band has shared stages with the likes of Vance Joy, Serena Ryder, The Strumbellas, Boy & Bear, and The Paper Kites. Reuben and the Dark's music has been heard in Handmaid’s Tale, The HIghwaymen, A Million Little Things, American Gods, Grey’s Anatomy, Ray Donovan and more. Most recently, “Black Water” from Reuben’s debut album was featured in the long-anticipated trailer for Netflix’s El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie.
