Last month, celebrated songwriter Charlotte Cornfield announced a new 4 song EP, In My Corner, which features two originals and covers by Lucinda Williams and Yo La Tengo. “The idea was to have some fun exploring rhythm and space in the studio without overthinking the little details that one tends to stew over while making a record,” says Cornfield.

Today, she is sharing her cover of Lucinda Williams’ “Fruits Of My Labor”. “When I first heard this song, I was so struck by the poetry of it,” says Cornfield. “Each verse is its own stanza, and the music just lifts the words to the fore. At first I just wanted memorize the lyrics, which was a beautiful exercise in and of itself, but I loved singing it so much that I started doing it at my live shows. It felt natural to record it. I feel like this song really represents where I’m at in life right now: resolved in some ways, moving on, just trying to enjoy it.”

Recorded together with Sam Gleason and Evan Cartwright, In My Corner will be released via Next Door Records on March 20. The EP’s first single, “In My Corner” is a spacious romp about chance encounters on the road. “Life as a touring musician is full of transient friendships and sprawling geography,” says Cornfield. “Sometimes there’s no rhyme or reason to where and when you might cross paths with someone you haven’t seen in a while. This is a song about the beauty and inconsistency of those friendships that transcend time and distance. And really, it’s about people being there for each other.”

 The other cover on the EP is Yo La Tengo’s “You Can Have It All” and it was only after Cornfield recorded the song that she realized that the Yo La Tengo version is actually a cover of a funk tune from the 70’s, written by Harry Wayne Casey and Richard Finch. “Our take on it is very much an homage to Yo La Tengo version, but I wanted to enter the groove and ride on the positivity sentiment of the song. When I hear it and play it, it’s like therapy.”

The EP finishes with a love song called “Upstate”, “‘cause not all ballads need to be sad,” says Cornfield. “I wanted it to be sparse and open, and I left room for a couple of little instrumental touches that accentuate the lyrics. I let the words guide this one, and the rest of it flowed from there.”

In the past, Cornfield has toured extensively in North America and Europe and has supported a huge range of artists including Tim Baker, Broken Social Scene, Anais Mitchell, Daniel Romano, and Sam Amidon. This Spring, she will headline a run of tour dates throughout North America before joining Sarah Harmer in May on the West Coast. Full tour dates can be found below.

Last year, Cornfield released the Polaris Music Prize long listed album The Shape Of Your Name which NOW Magazine called “a gorgeous collection of detail-rich folk songs” and Exclaim! said was her “songwriting at its most biting, lucid and nourished.” On the side, she is an in-demand drummer and musician and has worked closely with Tim Darcy of Ought, Molly Burch, Adrian Underhill, and members of Lake Street Dive

Toronto’s Luka Kuplowsky is announcing his signing to Next Door Records (Mama Bird Recordings outside of Canada). Known as a pillar of the Toronto music community, NDR are excited to introduce this artist to the rest of the world with an impeccable EP of covers from some of Kuplowsky’s deepest influences titled Judee Justin Arthur Mary

Taking Arthur Russell’s funky deconstructed pop song “Me For Real” and rendering it into a skipping, syncopated folk song; Judee Sill’s country-gospel anthem “There’s a Rugged Road” is opened up into a grooving, pastoral jam (think Bill Frisell’s “Gone, Just Like the Train”); Justin Haynes’ sincere and sardonic “Child Support” is imagined as ramshackle tropicalia; and Mary Margaret O’Hara’s “Anew Day” is paired down to a minimalist gospel-blues for guitar, bass and hand clap. Kuplowsky is sharing the reimagining of Mary Margaret O’Hara’s “Anew Day” today, backed by Bahamas’ Felicity Williams, Luka speaks to the song saying;

“When I sing Mary Margaret O’Hara’s “Anew Day”, I feel directly channeled to the joy and sorrow embedded in the music and lyrics. The first time I covered the song was the closing night of the Holy Oak Cafe - a space in Toronto that is so deeply important to my songwriting. The song is forever tied to memories of change and rebirth. Singing “Anew Day” is always utterly present and moving for me.”

For the new EP, Luka Kuplowsky (voice, guitar, harmonica) brought together a cast of some of his most familiar Toronto players including U.S. Girls and Andy Shauf collaborator Evan Cartwright on drums, Thom Gill (Sam Amidon, Bernice) on electric guitar and organ, the incredible jazz player Josh Cole (Sandro Perri, Martha Wainwright), on bass, and Bahamas’ Felicity Williams for backing vocals. Together, they’ve taken these songs and re-imagined what they could look like in a truly collaborative process to extract something new from each composition. Although it may seem like an EP of covers on first blush, this collection is a reverent take with the distinct fingerprints of each of the collaborators throughout. Luka Kuplowsky will be on tour this spring, including sets at the Treefort Music Festival. Find those below as well as a statement from Kuplowksy on Judee Justin Arthur Mary:

Judee Justin Arthur Mary is a collection of songs by artists that are deeply meaningful to me. They are songs that my friends and I honed as The Holy Oak Family Singers - a tribute band moniker named after our formative community space Holy Oak Cafe (2009-2017).

It is a true pleasure to briefly live inside the songs of Arthur Russell, Judee Sill, Justin Haynes and Mary Margaret O’Hara. Our tribute to them is to find our own centre and footing through their gifts of words and music.

The record was engineered by Dan Edmonds at Fort Rosie with Thom Gill (guitar), Evan Cartwright (percussion) and Josh Cole (bass) in the early evening of November 3rd 2019. A month later, Felicity Williams lent her voice to lift these tunes higher, Aaron Hutchinson lovingly mixed our session and Fedge settled everything into place with mastering . Together we forged some new pathways through familiar shapes and forms: Arthur Russell’s funky deconstructed pop song Me For Real is rendered a skipping, syncopated folk song; Judee Sill’s country-gospel anthem is opened up into a grooving, pastoral jam (think Bill Frisell’s Gone, Just Like the Train); Justin Hayne’s sincere and sardonic Child Support is imagined as ramshackle tropicalia; and Mary Margret O’Hara’s A New Day is paired down to a minimalist gospel-blues for guitar, bass and hand clap.

Here are some half-remembered takes on some of the deepest songwriters I know.”

Next Door Records is the new record label from the Outside Music Group. NDR was formed in 2019 with the first release being the Polaris Prize nominated The Shape of Your Name from Charlotte Cornfield. The label has gone on to release acclaimed records from Lydia Persaud, Ada Lea, and HUA LI 化力

For the sixth episode of Killbeat’s collaboration with Pondercast, titled PonderBeat, Laurie Brown begins with “Things I Do” from Andy Shauf, who she calls one of the best songwriters in Canada. Then, Ada Lea helps us to find another form of ourselves in “woman, here” while Toronto sextet Jaunt bring in old sounds from new electronics in “Nostalgia For The Present Moment”. Both Braids’ “Eclipse (Ashley)” and Austra’s “Risk It” take our minds to big places from the dangerous small moments of toxic relationships.

Shifting gears, Mister Nobu brings a similar organic, open, hopefulness that you might find in his Choir! Choir! Choir! performances with “Best Of Me” from his new solo album, while simplicity and sincerity take the forefront in Dana Gavanski’s “Good Instead Of Bad”.

Another one of Laurie’s favourite Canadian songwriters, Rose Cousins’ “The Agreement” puts words to shadows and makes you feel all of the things at once. The episode rounds out with R Grunwald’s “Age”, a sparse instrumental about the life cycle of human which is waiting for you to fill it up with meaning.
