PONDERBEAT - THE PODCAST SERIES FROM LAURIE BROWN’S PONDERCAST FEATURING A CURATED SELECTION OF TRACKS FROM KILLBEAT ARTISTS

In Episode 13 of PonderBeat, the collaboration between Killbeat Music and Laurie Brown’s Pondercast, Laurie takes us on a bit of a journey outside of our comfort zone, but not without returning here and there to the familiar. In Pierre Kwenders’ “Sahara”, the Polaris Music Prize winning artist pushes pop music closer to the edge, satisfying our curiosity for what’s ‘out there’, however still holding on to a safety rope of rhythm. Lune très belle’s “Mona” acts like a soft surprise for the listener, or as Laurie describes it, “fireworks without the work”.

Through the melodramatic melancholia of Hayden’s “East Coast”, we’re brought on a search for a feeling that we can’t quite name, but it’s growing, and it’s a bit ominous. On Gabrielle Shonk’s “How We Used To Be”, we’re pondering the past, but the question is, was it ever that good in the first place? Which leads us to ‘what if’? Well sometimes we get that answer, if you ever wondered what it would be like for two masters of their own craft to join together and push each other out of their comfort zones? That answer arrives in the form of “Is There Nowhere”, a track that sees Gord Downie and Bob Rock collaborating together in the studio over a decade ago. Now Laurie wonders, what could have been?

Sometimes, the unusual…feels good? In Field Guide’s “Wishing Well” the speaker is shocked by an unexpected happiness, but in a whispered way. Don’t want to jinx a new found ‘happy place’. A place that Dan Mangan longs to get back to in “All My People”, a fever dream of old home movies, transporting us back to a phantom place, finding what had been forgotten.

Returning back to the familiar, Laurie has given her coveted ‘Grilled Cheese Award’ to Bodywash’s “Kind Of Light” for delivering a thick wrap of comfort and delight. We pause, midbite, to wonder if you’re wasting your time or your love in Andy Shauf’s “Wasted On You”, but decide we’re full now anyway and it’s probably better just to head to bed.

Now, Cots “Moonlit Building” pulls you into a slumber, almost using the moon’s gravity to keep you there, while we wonder if there is more out there in Jordan Klassen’s bittersweet “Milk And Honey”. Then it’s back to that big, old, heavy, duvet of reveling in the best parts of the past with Bells Larsen’s “Wasps”, followed by what Laurie calls the ‘ultimate gift’, getting colour in your own feeling to leave with in Living Hour’s “Memory Express”. Until tomorrow…

For the 12th Episode of PonderBeat, Laurie Brown seems to take us on an exploration of the self. The collection begins with Bells Larsen’s “People Who Mean So Much To Me”, a song that looks at how the people in our lives end up shaping us down the road. An interesting image to pair with the new song from Lowell, “Guess I’m Going To Hell”, which sees the speaker throw their hands up and go it alone.

And when life and self are both changing drastically, Mike Edel’s “domino” sees the positives even if one finds themselves continually falling over like a domino. Yet, should one keep falling, and falling, and falling, they’d land right into Living Hour’s “No Body”, a place that’s here yet far away…another dimension where everything looks different and is kind of…floaty. Outer body even? And on the other end of that spectrum, Tamino’s “Fascination” brings us right back in on an introspective ride into the vulnerability of oneself.

At this point in the tracklist, we’re ready to get out of our own heads and break the status-quo. Both Pip Skid’s “You’re Not The Boss Of Me” and Tami Neilson’s “Careless Woman” tear down some walls and don’t give a shit about it.

As we come to the end of the playlist, we try to look at others and ourselves from a different perspective. In “Lydia Wears A Cross”, Julia Jacklin seems fascinated with the way in which the pageantry of a religion can intoxicate and define someone, and Reuben and the Dark’s “Coming Like A Storm” looks at the self from another set of eyes, and nothing makes sense.

Now, should you have not already thoroughly explored multiple facets of the self by this point, perhaps you just need to macro-dose on the melting qualities of the Timothy Leary-esque Yves Jarvis track, “On The Line”. That should help…I’m told.

Today, Pondercast and Killbeat are pleased to present the 11th installment of our podcast series, PonderBeat, a playlist of our artists curated by Laurie Brown.

For Episode 11, Laurie begins with two tracks which both share the common theme of finding courage, whether it be to stand up for who you are in Kyla Charter’s “Qwyn” or to face your own struggle with religion in Jordan Klassen’s “Ash Wednesday”.

Our Spring episode of PonderBeat features some very summery sounding selections with Scott Hardware’s “Summer” and Helena Deland’s “Swimmer”, however both tracks don’t necessarily focus on flora and fauna. Both explore past relationships; in Hardware’s case it’s his relationship with nostalgia, while Deland writes about her relationship and journey with her mother.

Yves Jarvis takes us on a trip of a different kind with “Prism Through Which I Perceive” while Katie Tupper wonders “How Can I Get Your Love”, perhaps an apt question to ask while exploring relationships through a pandemic. Speaking of relationships, leave it to Donovan Woods to get right down to the details in “Leave When You Go” with help of Ralph.

For Cassidy Mann, Laurie says it’s easy to see why she would be the first signee on Donovan Woods’ label, End Time Music. Similar to Woods’, Mann’s songwriting focuses on small, real moments, particularly in “Election Night”.

In The Weather Station’s “Marsh”, songwriter Tamara Lindeman also references an election night, however her track captures that feeling, much like the tension of awaiting an outcome, of hanging in the balance, teetering on the edge.

And to wrap up the playlist, Laurie has selected Sam Weber’s “Money” and adds a reminder that the arts were hit hard these last few years. Buy some music maybe?
