Reuben and the Dark frontman Reuben Bullock is doing his part in creating community amidst the COVID-19 global pandemic.

While on an Instagram Live Stream, Reuben sang fan favourite, “Hold Me Like A Fire”, a song that beckons fans to join Reuben on stage and sing along to create a mass choir at each show.  This was no different. After the live session, fans flooded Reuben’s inbox with their videos of them singing along to the live video.

With the help of filmmaker Kaelen Ohm, Reuben edited each video clip and created a mass virtual Social Distancing Choir.

The video, which was released the following day on YouTube, is an effort to not only replicate the powerful moment on stage to screen, but also bring people together in community through this performance. “It’s just an attempt to remind people we are all still connected,” explains Bullock. “People at home are more than just comments on a cell phone screen.. This was an impromptu idea that started during an Instagram live performance. People need a sense of togetherness right now.”

Reuben and the Dark just finished their winter tour for un | love, which included cancelled shows in the United States (supporting Mondo Cozmo) due to COVID-19.

“Thank you for sharing this moment with me,” Bullock shares with the video. “I’ve been much more intentional in these last weeks about finding light, and bringing it out of the darkness. We are all here, and there is peace in that. Bringers of the light.”

un | love is Reuben’s most honest and captivating album to date, opening a window into one of the most dramatic times in Bullock’s life. The spirited band’s third record – following 2018’s Arms of a Dream, and 2014’s debut Funeral Sky – tells Reuben’s story of endings and hope for the future.

Produced by Reuben and the Dark with Marcus Paquin (The National, Timber Timbre, Local Natives) and Kevin Drew (of Broken Social Scene), un | love evokes the raw emotion of the songs with anthemic, atmospheric sound. In comparison to the polished songs of Arms of a Dream, the new album shows a drastic turn in Reuben’s ease as a writer and freedom as a recording artist. His voice is at once unbridled and fallible. Through the dense imagery of his poetry shines a light shot straight from Reuben’s soul.

Last year, Reuben and the Dark’s track “Black Water” from their debut album was featured in the long-anticipated trailer for Netflix’s El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie. Bullock also lent his voice to another block-buster trailer, performing “What A Wonderful World” on the trailer for the upcoming film Dolittle starring Robert Downey Jr., Antonio Banderas, Emma Thompson, Rami Malek, Ralph Fiennes, and more.

In the midst of the world's lockdown we are all forced to refocus after our daily lives have in many ways been put on hold. Many artists have had to change their plans around their album releases, from the buzz of touring, to now having to stay at home in isolation. By turns break-up album, project of curiosity, and, as Dana puts it, “a reckoning with myself,” Yesterday Is Gone is an album of longing and devotion to longing, and of the uncertainty that arises from learning about oneself, of pushing boundaries, falling hard, and getting back up.  Moments of beguilement splinter a backdrop of tenderly picked guitar, bass, synth, and poppier elements, which commune to produce her own kind of wall of sound. Each component is meticulously placed, yielding a deeply sincere response to the chaos of human emotion.

Yesterday Is Gone was co-produced between Dana, Toronto-based musician Sam Gleason, and Mike Lindsay (Tunng and LUMP w/ Laura Marling). While Sam helped Dana bring out the tunes, Mike’s input marked the beginning of developing Dana’s sound. The two kept stripped it down to the essentials, keeping things bare and letting the songs speak for themselves. The album shapeshifted as it passed through the hands of Dana, Sam, and Mike, taking on different tastes, feelings, and visions. When Dana performed the songs with a band, they found new form again. She was intrigued by performers like David Bowie and Aldous Harding, who inhabit different personalities on stage, physically tuning themselves to their music.

“Often we have to go a little far in one direction to learn something about ourselves,” Dana says. The months of solitary writing and self-doubt testify to this, but they’ve led to Yesterday Is Gone: an optimistic, steely-eyed gaze into the future.

“The perfect world Ada Lea describes in the opening lines is meant to feel miles away, a reflection of the past. But after the past couple of weeks, the line, "Where every headline reads 'we laughed about it,'" suddenly feels light-years away.” - CBC Music (on “perfect world”)

“Ada Lea (Alexandra Levy) strikes another chord from her golden guitar with the release of her recent EP, woman, here, a melting pot of her older sounds mixed with new experimental tones introducing an unknown identity.” - Exclaim!

“[Ada Lea] makes intimate-sounding indie rock that digs deep into the complicated process of healing.” - NYLON

Ada Lea, the project of Montreal-based artist and musician Alexandra Levy, recently shared perfect world, the second single off her forthcoming new EP woman, here, exclusively via Bandcamp. “This song is about my family, and remembering what it felt like when my brother and I started growing up,” explains Levy. “Especially remembering that the traditions we'd have as kids would become less and less important, and we'd start seeing less of each other. I just woke up one morning feeling suddenly, incredibly aware that those days had passed for good.” The woman, here EP is out today via Next Door Records.

CBC Music sums up the timeliness and impact of the new track: “The perfect world Ada Lea describes in the opening lines is meant to feel miles away, a reflection of the past. But after the past couple of weeks, the line, ‘Where every headline reads 'we laughed about it,’ suddenly feels light-years away. ‘Perfect World’ is washed over with a palpable, aching sense of melancholy and a yearning for better times even if the Montreal singer-songwriter's voice remains resolute. Where her emotions do show some cracks of weariness is in the instrumentation: halfway through the track, an electric guitar strikes like thunder and soon Lea's voice fades and comes roaring back in a low rumble that is quickly consumed by static, drums and an outro that provides a brief but needed catharsis.” Full lyrics for the track can be found below.

“perfect world” follows the EP’s title track, which premiered via NYLON and earned additional acclaim from NPR Music (All Songs Considered) and FLOOD, among others. Ada Lea, who was set to perform at SXSW this year, was also recently featured in NPR Music’s The Austin 100 (“her deeply reflective breakup songs crackle with tension and life”).

The follow up to her acclaimed 2019 debut album what we say in private—praised by Pitchfork, NPR Music (‘New Music Friday’), Bandcamp Daily, VICE, The FADER, Exclaim!, FLOOD, Paste, and The Boston Globe, among many others—the woman, here EP acts as a bridge between what’s come before and where Ada Lea means to go next. A mix of both the old and new, Levy recorded “woman, here” recently in Los Angeles, CA, with Marshall Vore (Phoebe Bridgers, Better Oblivion Community Center). Perhaps her most direct work to-date, the new song offers a beautiful glimpse into the bold new chapter of Ada Lea. Additionally, woman, here also offers two previously-unheard recordings from the what we say in private sessions, in the form of “perfect world,” and the sparse and dream-like “jade,” which was inspired by a John Updike short story.

A fascinating glimpse behind the curtain, Levy says that the new EP should be seen as being “like a second cousin” to what we say in private. “We included the songs that we still felt close to,” she explains, “But didn't seem to have a place on the album.”

“PERFECT WORLD” LYRICS
In a perfect world
Where every headline reads “we laughed about it”
And your mother sees through each moment
And your eyes watch the screen
Cause ceremony makes things look right
In your childhood home,
Father watching static
And your brother phones
Says he won’t be home for dinner
Calling it back
Cause even when i close my eyes i see it
Turn your back
On the world and then it turns its back on you
In your small garage
Car engine running old memories
It’s the only thing
That can lull you to sleep
