Picture this: two people meet in small town northern Ontario on a Saturday night as summer is coming to an end. A chance encounter that eventually will define the narrative of the rest of their lives. That is both the story that runs through the music of summersets, and also how the new duo’s members, Kalle Mattson and Andrew Sowka, met growing up in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

Today, the pair release their first single, “anywhere you go”. “I first started writing this project as an exercise in writing character-based songs, specifically these two characters living in small-town Northern Ontario,” says Mattson. “The idea behind ‘anywhere you go’ was to have it be an introduction into their backstory and how badly they want to change their lives and their surroundings.”

“At its core it’s just a love song about escape,” says Sowka. “It weaves in and out of daydreaming both lyrically and musically, really taking influence from Kodachrome meets Born To Run.”

The 29-year old Mattson first gained public attention by writing the Polaris Music Prize nominated 2014 album Someday, The Moon Will Be Gold, that dealt with the death of his mother who passed when he was 16 years old. It was during the recording and touring of that album that Mattson and Sowka began their longtime musical collaboration. “The whole summersets project came from a place of desperation and inspiration. After my last solo album, I felt so beaten down by the music industry, but once Andrew and I began writing and singing these songs together I was so energized by the process, making music was fun again.”

Montreal-based indie trio Braids will release their new album Shadow Offering on June 19 via Secret City Records. Co-produced with Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie), the album finds the band at their most personal, unabashedly flexing a new sense of confidence through songs that reach a higher level of artistry and collaboration. Today they shared their new single "Just Let Me", a song that explores the push and pull of a relationship, the narratives created between partners, and inevitable hardships of love. The accompanying video features singer Raphaelle Standell-Preston's directorial debut with collaborator Derek Branscombe.

The band also shares the postponed European tour dates set for Nov 2020, see below for all dates.

"The song was born of a desire to get through to one's partner, to work through those feelings of complacency, stagnation, of pointless arguments; when you feel your partner, though sitting across the table from you, is further away than if they were not there at all," stated the band. "It's a yearning to understand how a love that was once there and so clear, could slip away. It asks the universal question that so many relationships encounter along their journey - where did our love go?"

Raphaelle continued, "I am grateful to have been able to explore this very question with two incredible dancers and dear friends Stephen John Quinlan, Justin De Luna, and choreographer Axelle Munezero. It was an emotional yet liberating experience - a lot of sweat, tears, and laughter went into this. I have to say, it's one of the things I am most proud of having a part of."

A luscious and expansive release, Shadow Offering leads us through a sonic tapestry of narrative. With heartbreaking honesty and precision, listeners traverse a nuanced and complicated world: one full of beautiful contradiction. Although the album directs itself at the failures of people to love and be loved, it also seeks to restore justice and attain blissful union. It's arc crests through the dark towards the light and learns how to dance with the dizzying rhythms of the heart. The songs bubble, sustain, dissolve, expand, and retract.

"Just Let Me" follows the release of "Snow Angel", a powerful opus that features Raphaelle's most visceral performance to date as she leans passionately into her anger, diving deeper into frustractions and anxieties about her internal and external worlds. The FADER stated, "The whole thing builds to a frantic final third in which the chaos and confusion is palpable."

Lead single "Young Buck" is also out now, an effervescent ode to impossible love that exudes an undeniable magnetism. It was praised by Pitchfork, The New York Times, The FADER, MTV, Stereogum, and Consequence of Sound who called it "a bouncy good time; in the tug-of-war between mind and matter, these pulsing synths are clearly on the side of the body."

Last fall they released "Eclipse (Ashley)", a song that sinks deep into a feeling of reverie for nature, the love found in friendship, and the vital essence of personal reflection. The New York Times raved "Raphaelle Standell-Preston sings with openhearted earnestness" while Stereogum named it "one of the best Braids songs ever, a power ballad built from cascading pianos, off-kilter rhythms, and a rising surge of atmospheric strings."

Known for its transportive works in sound and vision, Toronto psych trio Absolutely Free has today surprise released its original soundtrack recording for the art-house film Two Cares Due None. The gorgeously haunting and masterfully responsive score distills the film’s dramatic landscapes with suspenseful notes of magic-realism and minimalism. Its stirring, mysterious instrumental compositions range from reflective ambience to polyrhythmic electronic music, bringing to mind the iconic film scores of John Carpenter, Tangerine Dream, Cliff Martinez, and Geoff Barrow & Ben Salisbury. Two Cares Due None marks the band’s first foray into feature-length composition, after previously scoring short films by Norman McLaren for the National Film Board of Canada.

“The film entranced us into a distinct musical universe,” says Absolutely Free. “We found ourselves indulging mood over melody, exploring the periphery of what we have created live and on record up to this point.”

"Writing started in Iceland, where I travelled to be near the shoot,” recounts band member Moshe Fisher-Rozenberg. “The filmmakers made some friends and one of them had the keys to a derelict church in the old town in Blönduós. I spent a lot of time there alone, playing a beautiful pipe organ and overlooking the ocean waves - but never after dark."

The feature film was independently produced by visual artists Chris Boni and Melissa Fisher-Rozenberg, shot on location in Iceland, Italy, and Canada. Two Cares Due None explores the ways different cultures place value on objects as commonplace Icelandic artifacts gain exemplary worth in Canada’s art world and Italy’s black market. Absolutely Free – whose previous releases provide uniquely prismatic views of the polarized ideologies that exist in our culture –  intuits these concepts with incredible fluidity, adorning the imagery in distinctive, otherworldly sound.

Two Cares Due None OST follows Absolutely Free’s 2019 EP Geneva Freeport, an absurd fantasy about taking a holiday to one of the world’s most notorious high security art storage facilities, fittingly “bringing to question the process of ascribing economic value to cultural artifacts.” In contrast to the meditative ambience of Two Cares Due None, the EP (which features Meg Remy of U.S. Girls on “Currency” and mixing by Sandro Perri) has been celebrated for its rhythmic, melodic urgency and “motorik-driven psychedelia” (FADER), a retro-synthetic amalgam of Talking Heads, The Clash, Terry Riley, and William Onyeabor.

Two Cares Due None OST is the first full-length release since Absolutely Free’s Polaris Music Prize nominated self-titled debut album of 2014. A long-awaited official sophomore studio album has been hinted at since the Jorge Elbrecht-produced single “Still Life” surfaced in 2018. Stay tuned for more.
