Today, Donovan Woods shares the new video for his recent single, “Seeing Other People”, from his upcoming LP, Without People. “To me the song is about, not only watching someone you love move on, but coming to terms with the realization that not only do you have to learn to let them go, but you have to be happy for them,” says Woods. “I think the video is watching a fella do just that. You’ve got memories to hold on to, but the journey of adulthood always includes learning to live without people in one way or another. At the end of the video, I suppose we see him begin his journey.

For many musicians, the coronavirus-caused quarantine put a halt on creating new songs; however, award-winning singer-songwriter Donovan Woods adapted quickly from his makeshift home recording studio to create his new album Without People.

While the album was created by musicians who were all contributing remotely, it encompasses the most intimate moments of human connection — something most people continue to yearn for more than five months into the current global pandemic.

On Without People, Woods showcases his ability to illuminate the importance of tiny moments in relationships – from the innocent, unadulterated first blush of budding love on songs like “Clean Slate” to the complexities of the father-son dynamic on “Man Made Lake” and the appreciation of a lover’s grace in one’s weakest moments on the Katie Pruitt duet “She Waits For Me To Come Back Down". On “Lonely People”, celebrated British singer Rhys Lewis delicately echoes Woods’ sentiments about wanting to be alone – until you’re suddenly lonely.

“This album made me think about how easy life would be without other people, and how useless it would be,” says Woods. “This is what my brain wants to write about, so I suppose my responsibility is to follow it further and further into the most fearsome feelings I’ve got.”

Woods recruits co-writers Tucker Beathard, Ashley Monroe, Barenaked Ladies’ Ed Robertson, Thomas Finchum, and Katie Pruitt to create a lyrically-forward collection of songs bound by themes of the human condition. Long-time collaborator and producer James Bunton (David Myles, Vivek Shraya, Evening Hymns) and vocal producer Todd Clark (Dua Lipa, Noah Kahan, Phillip Phillips) round out the musically diverse creative team behind the album.

“I dove in deeper on this album than I ever have,” says Woods. “So if we are coming to the end of something, I can say that I tried my hardest to write truthfully about the people I’ve loved and the things I did wrong, and add my little verse to the story of what it feels like to be a person.”

For the release of Without People, Woods is committed to supporting individuals in marginalized communities. Woods launched his Humans of New York-esque Donovan Woods With People Project on July 29, championing independent creators from North America, United Kingdom, Sweden, Kenya and beyond across a diverse range of art mediums including graphic design and illustration, painting, dancing and more. Woods is collaborating with the artists from all over the world to create visual interpretations of each song on the record.’ Watch the second time-lapse video created by Sweden-based abstract artist Stephan Nilsson, HERE

TERRA LIGHTFOOT SHARES “IT’S OVER NOW” FROM UPCOMING LP

On the heels of her recent announcement of a new studio album, nearly three years since the release of her critically acclaimed album New Mistakes, soulful rocker Terra Lightfoot shares the new single and video for "It's Over Now" off the upcoming studio album Consider the Speed.

Recorded in Memphis, Tennessee at legendary Royal Studios, the single sees Lightfoot supported by drummer Steve Potts, bassist Eli Abrams, keyboardist Lester Snell, plus backing vocalists Sharisse Norman and Candise Raybourn-Mitchell  — and was produced by Jay Newland and engineered by Lawrence "Boo" Mitchell.

"'It's Over Now' first emerged as a slower, more sombre song — about letting go of a failed relationship, one that seemed viable but that ultimately just didn’t work out," says Lightfoot. "In-studio, it took on a new life as a straight-ahead rock song, and I can definitely take comfort in that. The drive of the band behind me puts me in a comfortable space to sing that intense chorus vocal."

Alongside the single, Lightfoot releases a new video for the song, directed by Mat Dunlap, videographer and graphic designer for The Sheepdogs, Andy Shauf, and Rose Cousins.

“We got up at sunrise and had a lot of fun making Terra run through beautiful Elysian Park,” says Dunlap. “The song has such a great bad-ass driving beat, I just kept picturing slow-motion footage of Terra being chased by the idea of an ex-lover still haunting her. I also wanted the video to have a slight feel of ’90s video done now, with Terra just being herself and having fun performing the song. I wanted to just let her be herself and find a way to show off her natural swagger.”

“Mat and I met up in Los Angeles in late February, right before the whole world shifted,” Lightfoot recalls. “I brought a fake fur coat I found at the Hamilton Value Village that I thought made me look a little like Cruella de Vil. We woke so early to shoot this footage near his home in Echo Park that I neglected to curl my hair. I remember thinking I was supposed to be serious for this video (the hardest thing for me — I tend to laugh or smile as soon as a lens is pointed at me) and somehow Mat captured a few crucial blue steel moments, plus some studio footage of me with a green guitar I stole from a friend's studio an hour before we shot the footage.”

Strong, sure-footed and soulful, Terra Lightfoot's new album Consider the Speed sees the artist finding new roots on the road, and at home in her own skin more than ever before. On this Memphis-recorded session, the acclaimed singer-songwriter-guitarist is in top form, backed by seasoned session ringers and captured by Grammy Award winning producer Newland and Grammy Award winning engineer Mitchell.

When Lightfoot initially met the critically acclaimed producer in Connecticut, they quickly bonded over a love for jazz, loud guitars, and CCR. As talk turned toward a working collaboration, Newland (who has produced Etta James, Norah Jones, Esperanza Spalding, Buddy Guy, and countless more) initially suggested recording in New York. Lightfoot was on board but at the same time was itching to work at Royal Studios, a legendary mainstay of the Memphis Sound that she had visited while on tour.

In the happiest of coincidences, two weeks before she was scheduled to track, Newland asked if she'd be up for trying out a studio he loved: Royal Studios, a humble South Memphis room that's plenty legendary. As the home of Hi Records and birthplace of pivotal sessions for Al Green, Chuck Berry, Ann Peebles, Ike & Tina Turner, Buddy Guy, and Keith Richards, it has also given the world innovative albums from De La Soul and Wu-Tang Clan, and even Mark Ronson's global chart-topper "Uptown Funk". (Additional recording took place at Toronto's Revolution Studios.)

At Royal, Lightfoot was able to connect with this eclectic lineage through the studio's owner, engineer Lawrence "Boo" Mitchell (Mark Ronson, Buddy Guy, John Mayer, North Mississippi Allstars, Ty Segall) and seasoned session players, a trio of drummer Steve Potts (Al Green, Ann Peebles, Otis Clay, Mavis Staples, Buddy Guy, Isaac Hayes, Rufus Thomas), bassist Davy Smith (Kris Kristofferson, Al Green, Rufus Thomas, Wilson Pickett, BB King, John Mayall) and veteran Stax keyboardist Lester Snell (Isaac Hayes, Al Green, Rufus Thomas, Albert King, Mavis Staples, Ann Peebles, Steve Earle, Keith Richards). Consider the Speed finds Lightfoot picking up momentum as the future unfolds before her like a map packed with creative possibilities, and no road a detour.

Consider the Speed is a next-level progression from Lightfoot’s 2017 album New Mistakes. That album was long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize and nominated for a JUNO Award for Best Adult Alternative Album, with its lead single “Paradise” also earning a production nomination as well as a SOCAN #1 Song Award.

The artist’s relentless drive as a touring performer has burned out at least one odometer and earned her the distinction of becoming the first female recipient of the Canadian Independent Music Association’s Road Gold distinction, in recognition of having sold more than 25,000 tickets in Canadian markets in a single calendar year. And in addition to millions of miles logged while touring the globe, including marquee tour dates supporting legendary acts like Willie Nelson, Bruce Cockburn, and Blue Rodeo, Lightfoot also found time to conceive, curate and produce The Longest Road Show, a groundbreaking touring revue.

“Unreal” is the new single from Julia Stone, her second offering for 2020 and follow up to her striking return in “Break”. Buried beneath the darkness of “Unreal” is a hidden sweetness. Beginning its journey as a synth-gilded tale of friendship, the sample-heavy, richly layered track also speaks to the experience of feeling disconnected and unseen within a relationship. “Unreal” and “Break” will feature on a greater body of work to come produced by Annie Clark (St Vincent) Thomas and Stone herself.

Written for her close collaborator and producer Thomas Bartlett, Stone explains the track’s anatomy - a dichotomy between darkness and delight. “When I’m with Thomas, I feel like myself. I don’t have to hide any part of who I am because I’m all loved by him,” she explains, before swiftly shifting the focus - “The song, like songs often do as they come to life, transformed, and became both about feeling real and authentic with someone and the opposite of that - the feeling when you’re around certain people and it’s hard to be yourself for whatever reason”.

The release of “Unreal” includes a visual adaptation with award-worthy performances from Stone and Australian co-star, Damon Herriman, who most recently appeared as Charles Manson in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Shot at Sydney’s Coogee Beach, the official video for “Unreal” depicts a heart-wrenching, futuristic, Hollywood-esque plotline of love, loss, memory and the power of grief.

Stone’s love interest fails to accept the loss of his partner and attempt to bring her back to life in clone form. The final, moving scene of the piece shows us it’s not the first time he has tried.

As eerie as it is beautiful, the video was directed by Bonnie Moir, director of internationally acclaimed short films We’re Not Here and Dear Michelle. Moir explains:

“What appealed to me most about this project, aside from the opportunity to work with the magnetic and talented Julia, was the chance to explore the emotional territory of relationships, love, loss and grief through the lens of the sci-fi genre. I leapt at the opportunity to work with Julia, Damon, producer Emily Cook and cinematographer Sam Chiplin. These creative pursuits are nothing without an amazing team."

Reimagined, reborn and reinvigorated, this new era for Stone replaces dirt under foot with wet pavements and sticky dancefloors; trades blue skies for red lights and red lips. Step into Julia Stone’s brand-new world.
