“Its nine songs are varied between slinky groovers like Take the Edge Off and near country-rock of Dogstar to the reggae-tinged I’ll Find You In the Mountains. One of the catchiest songs, Invitation, sounds like it could have been on any of the later period Hip records. The Vancouver Sun

“It is indeed excellent, and it definitely sounds a bit like the Kinks.” The Georgia Straight

On February 5, Strippers Union, fronted by Rob Baker (The Tragically Hip) and Craig Northey (Odds), released Disc 1 of their new double LP, The Undertaking. Along with the release of Disc 1 fans were able to purchase both discs on limited edition vinyl ahead of the release of Disc 2, which will arrive on digital platforms on March 12, 2021. For this first single from the second record, Strippers Union asked fans who already purchased the vinyl which track they wanted fellow fans to hear who had yet to listen to Disc 2.

The result is “No Rain Tonight”. Of the track, Baker says, "We’ve worn a path, but if we neglect it, it may become overgrown and we could still lose our way. Take care of the path."

In 2006, Strippers Union released their debut LP, Strippers Union Local 518, and then followed it up with The Deuce a short five years later. Now, nearly a decade later the band is ready to share their third LP, The Undertaking, a double LP recorded at The Bathouse Studio with drummer Pat Steward and bassist Doug Elliott.

Why so long a wait between albums? “These last 10 years have had their share of unexpected twists and turns,” says Baker in a full essay on the new album which can be read here. “Suffice it to say that my life was in upheaval. My lifelong dream, which was embodied by The Hip, had come to a sudden and very final end. It was, oddly, both profoundly sad and fulfilling, and it left a void for me. What was I to do now? With my dream done and my sense of personal identity badly shaken, I began the process of trying to figure out what I might do with the remainder of my life. I descended into my home studio and applied myself to the one thing I can count on to keep the demons at bay, which is songwriting and recording. Apparently there were more demons than I realized, and before long I was overflowing with demos… more than 50. Originally I thought I would include an album's worth of personal tunes with a book that I'm writing about my misadventures and shared laughs in The Hip...and I may still do that, but it struck me that a lot of these tunes were Strippers Union material.

I convened with Craig in the spring of 2018 and began playing him demos that I’d accumulated over the past year or two - songs which I felt might be SU contenders. We nailed the lyrics and melodies for five tunes in three days. Over the next 18 months we had three more writing sessions as well as exchanges of ideas through Dropbox. By the start of 2020 we were up to 18 tunes. Initially my plan was to use my bass lines and programmed drums - I’d spent a lot of time getting them right and I was pretty proud of the work - my ego wanted to see ‘all instruments played by Rob Baker’, but my better judgement told me to give Pat Steward and Doug Elliott a crack at those parts. These guys have been playing together so long that they are a well tuned machine - ruthlessly efficient and tasteful. I headed to North Van with my hard-drive in tow and spent three days in Craig’s Doghouse of Thunder Studio with Pat and Doug nailing down the bass and drums on 18 tunes in three days!”

Why a double album…why make an album at all? “Excellent questions,” says Baker. “A double album because I really like this batch of tunes and feel that it is an eclectic set that covers a broad expanse and represents our diverse interests. We didn’t do it for you - we do it to please ourselves. I've always operated under the assumption that I am not special or unique - so if it's something I like, then there are lots of others who will like it as well.

I'm proud of these songs. I’m proud of the work. When we were young we wanted to conquer, to be respected and adored. Time marches on. These songs reflect who we are now - a little less bravado and a little more restraint, less inclined to thrash and more inclined to find a little truth, a little meaning, and to revel in the little pleasures.”

REUBEN AND THE DARK SHARES NEW SINGLE “YES”

Today, Reuben and the Dark shares the new track, "YES,” which came from a desire to put something positive into the world. "I thought I would be writing more songs about despair...," says Reuben and the Dark frontman Reuben Bullock, "but we don’t need anymore hopelessness right now."

The new single represents a departure both in sound and philosophy for Reuben, whose pastoral highway rock balladry has earned comparisons to Mumford and Sons and The War On Drugs, and found homes in an array of TV/Film including the Breaking Bad Movie, Grey's Anatomy, and more. The affirmative vibe of the song floats on a bed of spacious melody, matching the emotional heights of Reuben's folk-rock epics but balanced by alt-pop sensibilities and triumphant call-and-response vocals.

Reuben and the Dark is the spirited folk-rock outfit led by Canadian singer-songwriter Reuben Bullock, whose music blends introspective lyrics with soaring instrumentals. Anyone who has seen Reuben and the Dark perform knows that the bandmates share a palpable bond onstage, creating a heedless energy that reverberates with the audience. Now perhaps more than ever, even though they can’t perform for live audiences, the band hopes their music can bring a feeling of togetherness to fans.

Known for vulnerability, and penchant for creating uplifting cinematic intensity in their songs, Reuben and the Dark have been featured in a variety of television shows and movies. Most recently, a cover of R.E.M.’s “Shiny Happy People set the stage for a very critical moment of Grey’s Anatomy. Earlier this year, their song Hold Your Head High” was included in the new CBS dramedy All Rise, the track Black Waterwas featured in the long-anticipated trailer for Netflix’s El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, and Bullock lent his voice to the trailer for Dolittle with a rendition of the classic “What A Wonderful World”.

On May 14, Great Lake Swimmers will release the recording of their performance at Toronto’s Church Of The Redeemer on vinyl and digital platforms via (weewerk) Records. The concert capped off the band’s Canadian spring tour of 2007, just days before the group continued on to embark on a full European tour to support the newly released album Ongiara. It was recorded for CBC Radio broadcast by producer and engineer Ron Skinner, with live sound mixed by Andy Magoffin, who also re-mixed and mastered the recording for this release. The album is notable not only for the grand acoustics of the church, but for the raw first impressions of songs that would become fan favourites, as well as notable guest appearances by Basia Bulat (backing vocals), Owen Pallett (violin), and Bob Egan (pedal steel) in addition to the band’s core lineup. The live set is comprised of songs from the first three Great Lake Swimmers albums; Self-titled (2003), Bodies And Minds (2005), and Ongiara (2007). Live At The Redeemer 2007 will be available on Bandcamp beginning May 7.

Today, audiences can listen to “Your Rocky Spine” from the album. “This version of ‘Your Rocky Spine’ is especially poignant because it was the first time it was played in front of a Toronto audience,” says songwriter Tony Dekker. “It features a guest appearance on backing vocals by Basia Bulat, and would go on to become one of our most well-known songs. As the first song on the album, it was also placed first in the set list, and opened the concert, which took place in the acoustically stunning Church Of The Redeemer.”

MORE ON LIVE AT THE REDEEMER 2007

“As I write this, we are very near to the year mark of a pandemic that has put much of the world into holding patterns of lockdown, isolation, and closures,” says Dekker. “It has been devastating on many levels, but there are silver linings; for me, it’s been a chance to press pause and reflect, with part of that being a look back, and taking stock. That has led to, in this down time, the opportunity to go through the archives of Great Lake Swimmers live recordings from over the years, and a few things were found that I think are worth sharing.

What you hear on this record is the official release show for our album Ongiara, recorded for radio broadcast by the CBC on April 14, 2007. It was the first time that the new songs were performed in front of a hometown, Toronto audience, and it capped off a tour of Ontario, Quebec, and Western Canada. Days later, we were en route to Europe for a month of tightly scheduled tour dates there. And following that, a whirlwind month-long tour of the U.S. brought us up to a string of summer festival dates. It was a busy year, and looking back on it now, I’m not sure how we survived it. It was the first time that it felt like the music was starting to reach a wider audience.

For this particular show, we were lucky to have local friends and collaborators help expand our four-piece band at the time to a seven-piece, which includes Owen Pallett on violin, Bob Egan on pedal steel, and Basia Bulat guesting on backing vocals. At one point I’m also on stage alone with my guitar.

Spaces have always been important to me, from where the albums are recorded to the rooms in which the songs are shared. Playing and singing in interesting acoustic places, like old halls, and churches, especially, draws out performances that I think have a special quality that you can’t quite put your finger on, but can feel are there; notes swirling together in a big open room, bathed in natural reverberation. As a singer, I feel that the performance is transformed by the space, as if it were another instrument, or a member of the band. The space completes the song, in a way, and I think there is evidence of that here.”

On the recording of the performance, engineer Ron Skinner notes: “I’ve been recording live music for the CBC for more than 25 years. Over the course of my career I’ve had the great honour of recording hundreds of beautiful live performances.

It is no secret that Great Lake Swimmers’ Tony Dekker likes beautiful acoustic settings. And Toronto’s Church of the Redeemer is definitely that. But more than that this location seems like the perfect spot for a Great Lake Swimmers concert. A beautiful, serene sanctuary right in the heart of a loud and busy city. I think you can hear that juxtaposition in the performances on this recording.

My stress levels are pretty high on the day of a live recording. The combination of the logistics, the long day and the adrenaline rush of recording live often makes it hard for me to enjoy the music. I generally get to experience the joy of the recording a few days later when listening back alone in the mixing studio. Now, hearing this recording again almost 14 years later, I remember it was a great day.”

CONCERT REVIEWS FOR GREAT LAKE SWIMMERS AT THE CHURCH OF THE REDEEMER, APRIL 14 2007

“I’ve seen a number of musical performances in a few of the churches on Bloor St, but this was my first at this particular house of worship and I think it sounded far and away the best...everything sounded stunning. Everything. The performances were note-perfect, the mix perfectly balanced and the church acoustics everything you’d hope they’d be. It would be possible to go on at length (even moreso) about how good it sounded, so let’s just say it sounded better than you could possibly imagine.” – Frank Yang, Chrome Waves

“It was my first time seeing a show in Church of The Redeemer which is a quaint, old church situated in downtown Toronto, conveniently off the subway line....Through roughly an hour and a quarter's set of material Tony Dekker performed his set through a variety of configurations. There were awesome full-band performances like set-opener "Your Rocky Spine", "I Am Part Of A Large Family" and "Moving Pictures Silent Films" (a strikingly beautiful song already made even better by Basia Bulat's lovely vocal touch). It was good news to hear from Tony that the evening was being recorded by CBC Radio, presumably for radio broadcast but hopefully also for a live album release if we could be so lucky.” – Michael Ligon, For The Records
