In 2020, Donovan Woods released Without People via his own Meant Well label. It’s an album that ranks as Woods’ most successful release with more than 10 million streams and climbing. Today, a new deluxe edition of Without People adds four bonus tracks (two new originals and two alternate mixes).

The deluxe album includes a song that fans have been craving since the Without People album was released, a full version of the radio-ready interlude "When The Party's Over”, written with Tom Douglas (John Michael Montgomery, Martina McBride, Miranda Lambert) and Travis Wood (James Barker Band, The Reklaws and Banners). It also boasts the never-before-heard song "Break Somebody’s Heart” which is storytelling at its finest, honing in on specific small town life moments that teach greater lessons of love and loss.

“Grew Apart”, a song that Woods recorded solo and with country artist Logan Mize and has accumulated over 15 million streams, gets a haunting piano rendition on the deluxe edition, cutting right to the bone. Then, an acoustic interpretation of “Whatever Keeps You Going” pairs Woods with the pure voices of the J.P. Robarts Public School Music Project in London, ON.

“This deluxe version is really in place of what live shows might’ve been like if the pandemic hadn’t happened,” says Woods. “Among my favorite parts of playing live are presenting songs in a different context and introducing new material, and this deluxe version is doing that type of work.”

Woods also launches today his new interactive website www.Without-People.com for fans to engage even further with the With People Project and to learn more about many of the people involved, bringing Woods, the art creators and fans even closer than before. The website also gives fans exclusive access to brand-new videos for the deluxe edition.

For an album made so piecemeal, Without People was listed in the Top 50 Albums Of 2020 by The Line of Best Fit and album single “She Waits For Me To Come Back Down” hit #1 on CBC Music’s Top 20 charts. Exclaim! said that Without People “pushes pop to its introspective limits,” while other outlets claim it “strikes a gentle, poignant note” (Billboard), it’s “a nuanced experience” (American Songwriter), and a thoughtful exploration of “fleeting interpersonal moments now under the microscope,” (NPR/KUTX).

“...a lemonade-and-hammock number from Summersets, ...a wedding vow or something for shared whispers in the dark. The Globe and Mail ( on “never love another”)

“...a melancholic reminder of far off travels, calmingly reassured by Mattson and Sowka’s charming vocal and guitar melodies. It’s easy on the ears, and easier on the heart." - Dusty Organ ( on “anywhere you go”)

“only you”, the new single from summersets (the duo of Kalle Mattson and Andrew Sowka) is another chapter of the band’s ongoing narrative concept, following two fictional characters that were chronicled in their debut EP, small town saturday. In the timeline, “only you” takes place the morning after summersets’ last single, “afterthought”, following the two characters apparent break-up as one pleads to the other to not move away.

The video arrives today ahead of the song release tomorrow. “Since forming summersets at the beginning of the pandemic last year, Andrew and I have lived in different cities (and provinces) which has made filming music videos extremely difficult,” says Mattson. “Our solution has been to create these Super 8 found footage montages from the 60s and 70s. We eventually stumbled upon the phenomenon that is ‘tractor square dancing’ and felt it was perfect to go along with the country tinge of ‘only you’.”

The 29-year old Mattson first gained public attention by writing the Polaris Music Prize nominated 2014 album Someday, The Moon Will Be Gold, that dealt with the death of his mother who passed when he was 16 years old. It was during the recording and touring of that album that Mattson and Sowka began their longtime musical collaboration. “The whole summersets project came from a place of desperation and inspiration. After my last solo album, I felt so beaten down by the music industry, but once Andrew and I began writing and singing these songs together I was so energized by the process, making music was fun again.”

This project is both the musical start for Sowka and Mattson and also the start of a multi-part story to be told over the course of a larger collection of songs. As the two sing on “More Less” from small town saturday, ‘Some nights when I remember the two of us way back when, cigarettes and soft Septembers, the more beginning the less we end’.

Fresh off the heels of the release of DJ Python’s “Young Buck” remix, which saw support by Pitchfork, BBC 6Music, and more, Braids is thrilled to reveal today two brand new songs titled “Slayer Moon” and “2020”. Recorded during the sessions of their last album Shadow Offering, the new tracks were premiered by the band last night during their WWWorld Premiere live concert on their YouTube channel.

The band shares their inspiration behind the songs. “‘Slayer Moon’ is inspired by a Sailor Moon phone case I bought in Tokyo, at 3 am while on tour in Japan. Growing up, I was obsessed with Sailor Moon, particularly with the ability to magically transform from a normal girl into a full-on mystical and powerful Sailor Scout, battle-ready to combat the evil forces of the world.“

‘What a deal, legs with more potential than my life’

“Sailor Scouts have the longest legs ever drawn - so long that I drew a parallel between their immaculate legs, and our frenetic modern minds, lost in the ego abyss of the infinite scroll.”

‘I can’t figure out my life blood, what should I prescribe to?’

“‘2020’ was written sometime in 2017, after a long period of being alone – in an abstract sense of the word – while reaching for fleeting physical closeness. I was with friends, but my heart was lonely and longing for companionship, my body confused with the unfamiliarity of new and shallow encounters. I had been meditating a lot during this time ‘tracing a line through the centre of my body’ – a process of inward-looking that I veer towards when I take the time to sit. I titled the song ‘2020’, in 2020. Revisiting the song's lyrics through the eyes of our present reality struck a chord with me. I felt as close to the song as when I had first written it. I find that I am asking myself similar questions while in this pandemic, without my friends, my family, my familiar structures.”

‘I am of all things, love and hate. Placing the pieces of myself, hopefully, without judgment, without bitterness. To not knowing, who I am entirely. Who am I, without them? Who am I, without you, in my life?’

Braids most recent album, Shadow Offering, co-produced by Chris Walla, is out now via Secret City Records. A luscious and expansive release, Shadow Offering leads us through a sonic tapestry of narrative. With heartbreaking honesty and precision, listeners traverse a nuanced and complicated world: one full of beautiful contradictions. This release was critically acclaimed around the globe. In the United States, The New York Times said, “Raphaelle Standell-Preston sings with openhearted earnestness,” while The Fader exclaimed, “The whole thing builds to a frantic final third in which the chaos and confusion is palpable," (About “Snow Angel”). Consequence of Sound added about “Young Buck”, “a bouncy good time; in the tug-of-war between mind and matter, these pulsing synths are clearly on the side of the body.” Stereogum said Shadow Offering “feels like the culmination of what Braids have been building towards over the last 10 years. It’s glimmering and assured, an album that’s constantly refining and one-upping itself.” The album was greatly received in the United Kingdom as well. The Line of Best Fit gave it 9/10, and described as “a gloriously intricate fourth outing [...] Braids have refined themselves, ready to offer mature, emotional soundscapes of understanding,” while Clash Magazine and Uncut rated the album 8/10.
