Absolutely Free moves one step closer into digital arcadia with “Interface”, the second prismatic excerpt from the long-anticipated sophomore album, Aftertouch, out September 24, 2021 via Boiled Records.

Absolutely Free has cultivated a decade-long reputation for an unorthodox approach to both conceiving and performing music. The Toronto psychedelic pop trio’s Polaris Music Prize nominated debut was hailed as “breathtakingly beautiful” (Stereogum) and a “deep-space cosmic-rock odyssey” (Pitchfork) upon its 2014 release. Following an array of multimedia projects and releases, including 2019’s Geneva Freeport EP (featuring U.S. Girls’ Meg Remy), the band recently announced its much-anticipated sophomore album, Aftertouch, with that “flying wedge of art pop” (Brooklyn Vegan), first single “How To Paint Clouds”.

The album’s second single, “Interface” is a peek further into the kaleidoscopic minds of Absolutely Free, accompanied by a visual drench in vibrant neon palettes and retro-futuristic tendencies by Australian artist Benjamin Portas.

“Written as a pseudo-love song that interludes between two versions of self, Interface recalls an adolescent summer where I spent every waking hour on early web-based chat programs, instead of going outside,” says singer Matt King. ”Typical coming-of-age feelings of loss and confusion were further conflated by prioritizing an emerging potential of a new virtual identity more ‘real’ than a physical self.”

Lifted from the forthcoming second album Aftertouch, “Interface” is a maximal psychedelic blast awash in synthesizers and radiant melody, about hyperconnectivity and the preservation of individuality for a generation coming of age in a wild time.

Running free with flourishes of experimentation, yet rooted in accessible melody and rhythm, Absolutely Free blurs boundaries between avant-garde and pop across the album’s eight songs. A tug-of-war within its sonic harmony, Aftertouch explores narratives of hegemony, grief, and exploitation in the present while ultimately sustaining curiosity for the unknown “post-everything” future. Making reference to the name of a synthesizer function, Aftertouch deconstructs seismic shifts in contemporary culture and lingers in the echoing sensations that remain.

Known for their varying multi-instrumentalist approaches and experimental live performances, Absolutely Free “wanted to create an album that wasn’t bound by a physical ability to perform it live, to not only expand our palette, but also to consider the live performance as something completely separate.” Shifting in the liminal space between analogue and digital sounds, real and fabricated images, revelling in and refuting the loss of tactility, Absolutely Free is able to create vibrations of physical tension and emotional resonance.

Produced by Jorge Elbrecht, who has shaped the sound of releases by No Joy, Gang Gang Dance, Japanese Breakfast, and his own bands Lansing-Dreiden and ViolensAftertouch is dense with ideas but balanced by precise decisions. Culling from a myriad of influences that span Krautrock, New Wave, the proliferation of international Psychedelic and Funk Compilations, and early forms of electronic dance music, Absolutely Free has created a patina of disparate but harmonic styles distinctly its own. Resolute guitar strokes ring out like a call to prayer on the previously released “Still Life” as the band questions our traditional understandings of societal progress and an optimistic future.

Comprised of the core trio of Matt King (vocals/multi-instrumentalist), Michael Claxton (bass/synth), and Moshe Fisher-Rozenberg (drums/synth), Absolutely Free is an offshoot of the now-defunct experimental rock outfit DD/MM/YYYY, whose multi-rhythmic boundary-pushing raison d'être provided a springboard for the open skyline on which Absolutely Free now creates. The band’s Polaris-nominated 2014 debut album Absolutely Free., released via Arts & Crafts/Fat Possum Records garnered international acclaim from Pitchfork, FADER, Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan, Exclaim!, Under The Radar, Pop Matters, AllMusic, many more. Absolutely Free have toured alongside Alvvays, Youth Lagoon, and Preoccupations and have shared bills with Beak>, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, U.S. Girls, and Fucked Up.

Following an array of multimedia projects and releases, including 2019’s Geneva Freeport EP (featuring U.S. Girls’ Meg Remy) today, the band officially announces its much-anticipated sophomore album, Aftertouch, sharing the first single and video, “How To Paint Clouds”. The song, a complex yet soaring tapestry of polyrhythms and melody-laden synthesizers, considers the absurdity and impermanence of art – an overture to Absolutely Free’s examination of the dwindling physicality of our digitized existence on Aftertouch.

Released today, “How To Paint Clouds” is accompanied by an AI video in which an algorithm built from 2000 internet-sourced paintings of clouds teaches a computer to create its own original paintings of clouds. “Although there are unimaginable forces at play in developing a cloud, or in creating art, all we are able to look for is another face in the sky, a mirror looking back at us,” the band reflects. “A cloud always looks like something other than a cloud.”

Running wild with flourishes of experimentation, yet rooted in accessible melody and rhythm, Absolutely Free continues to blur boundaries between avant-garde and pop across the album’s eight songs. Known for its transportive works in sound and vision, Toronto psych trio Absolutely Free recently released its original soundtrack recording for the art-house film Two Cares Due None. The gorgeously haunting and masterfully responsive score distills the film’s dramatic landscapes with suspenseful notes of magic-realism and minimalism. Its stirring, mysterious instrumental compositions range from reflective ambience to polyrhythmic electronic music, bringing to mind the iconic film scores of John Carpenter, Tangerine Dream, Cliff Martinez, and Geoff Barrow & Ben Salisbury. Two Cares Due None marks the band’s first foray into feature-length composition, after previously scoring short films by Norman McLaren for the National Film Board of Canada.

Now, Absolutely Free opens a window onto the geographic and cultural landscapes that shape Two Cares Due None with the music video for “The Office / The Community.” Featuring footage captured by directors Melissa Fisher-Rozenberg and Chris Boni on location in Iceland, Italy, and Canada, Absolutely Free articulates the dark pastel images of towering countryside with a tense blend of whistling synthesizers and shuffling electronic rhythm that forms one of the score’s central melodic themes.

“The film entranced us into a distinct musical universe,” says the trio of Michael Claxton, Moshe Fisher-Rozenberg, and Matthew King. “There was no resisting its aesthetic demands, which lead us deep into compositions that indulge mood over melody, exploring the subtleties at the periphery of what we have created live and on record up to this point.”

The independent feature film explores the ways in which different cultures place value on objects, as commonplace Icelandic artifacts gain exemplary worth in Canada’s art world and Italy’s black market. Absolutely Free – whose previous releases provide uniquely prismatic views of the polarized ideologies that exist in our culture –  intuits these concepts with incredible fluidity, adorning the imagery in distinctive, otherworldly sound.

“What was revealed to us during our production voyages to Iceland and Italy were the mystical links that our script shared with the native culture. Working intuitively in a foreign landscape and culture enriched the aspect of chance that this fictional piece is steeped in,” recall the directors. “Absolutely Free’s score replies to the authentic locations, concepts, and production design with their own significant vision, enhancing the surreal dimension of the story.”

Two Cares Due None OST follows Absolutely Free’s 2019 EP Geneva Freeport, an absurd fantasy about taking a holiday to one of the world’s most notorious high security art storage facilities, fittingly “bringing to question the process of ascribing economic value to cultural artifacts.” In contrast to the meditative ambience of Two Cares Due None, the EP (which features Meg Remy of U.S. Girls on “Currency” and mixing by Sandro Perri) has been celebrated for its percussive urgency and “motorik-driven psychedelia” (FADER).

Two Cares Due None OST is the first full-length release since Absolutely Free’s Polaris Music Prize nominated self-titled debut album of 2014. A long-awaited official sophomore studio album has been hinted at since the Jorge Elbrecht-produced single “Still Life” surfaced in 2018. Stay tuned for more.
