Today, Ghost Woman shares the new single, “Clockwork”, the upcoming self-titled LP, out in Canada via Victory Pool and via Full Time Hobby everywhere else. The album brims with self-produced and self-performed Anatolian sounds and lo-fi hooks. Subscribing to the school of authenticity songwriter Evan John Uschenko seemingly shares with rebellious new-psych classmates Kurt Vile or The Black Angels, Ghost Woman takes its inspiration largely from groups like Can, Beak, Jefferson Airplane, The Byrds, and The Firesign Theatre

On the track, Uschenko says, “This song came out of no-where. Started out as a completely different progression and ended up sounding like this. No clue what the lyrics are about. Just hit record and sang something.”

MORE ABOUT GHOST WOMAN
Given Ghost Woman’s inspiration, it’s no wonder the album’s sometimes krautrock groove is often thwarted by the unapologetic exploration of heartbreak and misplaced expectations; But heartbreak ain’t the only unsuccessful temptress at the band’s doorstep.

“Not only did we have a rehearsal space catch fire and ruin some of our gear but this last year my van got broken into and ripped off some of my favourite guitars and amps. I try not to let that bug me too much, and luckily they were cheap-o Sears-Roebuck / Stencil amps / Japanese knock-offs,” he rambles with a morning coffee and cigarette in hand. “A few road bumps can’t stop us. It's only gonna make us come back stronger.”

Ghost Woman’s blissfully hypnotic world is the creation of melodic maniac, Evan John Uschenko. Beating the odds of life as a busy touring musician, salvaging and replacing his instruments from burned down rehearsal spaces, van break-ins and far too many relocations to list, Uschenko has transformed his lifelong habit of homespun sonic exploration into a sensory ‘mix and match’ experience destined for the main stage.

“When I record songs I tend not to approach them with any preconceived idea,” He says, staring at the ceiling. “I take a seat, tune the guitar and enjoy myself. It’s always been like that for me. If it don’t turn you on, what’s the point?”

Evan’s sonic and literal adventures as a touring multi-instrumentalist with songwriter / producer / guitarist Michael Rault saw him share international stages with the likes of Jacco Gardner, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, and The Mild High Club who unwittingly paved the way for Ghost Woman’s inevitable incarnation.

“Having the opportunity to witness those groups perform was inspiring to say the least. Especially Gizz and Jacco. The attention to detail, professionalism as a touring act and the extra effort put into creating a killer live show doesn’t go unnoticed. It’s a calibre I’m just not used to where I’m from,” Uschenko laughs. “When the tours were wrapped, I got home and immediately started writing music. And music with a live show in mind”

"One of the year’s most thrilling rock statements." - Rolling Stone

“Bobbing and weaving, its wiry, intricate guitar part pushes Tim Darcy's vocal into a different plane from his previous work.” - Clash

“'Blank Curtain,' a song that seemingly alludes to the myriad of possibilities the band now faces, stacked with oblique imagery and tethered to a driving groove." - FADER

In February, Cola, the new project from former Ought members Tim Darcy and Ben Stidworthy and US Girls/The Weather Station drummer Evan Cartwright, announced their debut LP, Deep In View, due May 20 via Next Door Records. With singles “Blank Curtain”, “So Excited”, and “Water Table” earning early praise from the likes of Pitchfork, NPR, Clash, NME, Uncut, Exclaim!, and Rolling Stone who just named the band an Artist You Need To Know and called their debut "one of the year's most thrilling rock statements", the album has rapidly become one of the most anticipated releases of a busy spring. Today, the band are sharing a new preview of the LP entitled “Degree”

Speaking to Consequence about the new track and LP in an Origins feature, each member chimes in:

"The character in 'Degree' is cycling in and out of these dreamscape states (movie theater, meditation, etc) and then trying to catch up to something in their day to day life," says Darcy. "I picture what it feels like running to catch the bus when you're in a daze and suddenly have to sprint."

Stidworthy explains that "'Degree' is based on a 2-step kinda track I produced while trying to do the fabled and well-trodden path of using guitars in electronic music. I came up with this psych-drenched outro that I really enjoyed so I decided to base a song around that chord progression." Cartwright adds,

"I wanted the beat to feel like the opening and closing of a mechanical valve. The guitar riff supplies this relentless propulsion and I thought that the drums should act as a stiff regulator: aggressively blocking, then releasing the heavy flow that comes pouring out of the guitar."

Deep in View is the debut album from former Ought members Tim Darcy (vocals, guitar) and Ben Stidworthy (bass) alongside Evan Cartwright (drums). Titled after philosopher Alan Watts’ anthology of the same name, the record is built on a foundation of elegant guitar grooves and knotty rhythms, offering commentary on modern life and technology through curious lyrical vignettes, where quotidian objects and scenes are never just as they seem. Deep In View is equally a product of introspective songwriting as it is a consideration of the abstract landmarks of an increasingly media-mediated society. It also presents the most concise and melodic songs Darcy and Stidworthy have written to date.

“I love when I find a record that has many different angles from which it can be approached,” Darcy explains. The band’s affinity for polysemy is first-and-foremost a chord struck in the name Cola, which most obviously is the fizzy beverage that Darcy deadpans is "bound by laws older than man to poison most ordinary life on earth” in closing track 'Landers', but also can be traced back to a term in poetics as well as an acronym about social security that refers to “Cost of Living Adjustment”. Cola is also about drinking in the endless crispness of a streamlined (and streamed) world, and the often unsettling sense of satisfaction and emptiness that subsequently sets in. Fundamentally, this record is about passion and what happens to a person when they find themselves increasingly encountering a passionless landscape of consumption. This peeling back of layers is integral to both Cola’s mindset as well as their worldview, which despite a claustrophobic time in the making sees them joyfully exploring new realms as musicians.

Cola started collaborating in fall 2019 when Darcy and Stidworthy, both formerly of Ought, reached out to their friend Cartwright, who they had frequently met on the road while he was drumming with various other projects. “It wasn’t the post-Ought band right off the bat,” Darcy says, “we really just took time to enjoy the process of collaborating and writing songs together.” The band’s organic chemistry solidified quickly after a few sessions of jamming in-person. Then, as the pandemic began, they were forced to decamp and write songs separately. Working in solitude ended up becoming a “defining color as well as a barrier” to the album, says Darcy. He notes that he wrote the lyrics to “Fulton Park” as a “dream landscape”, a sort of alternative to the frustration and depression he was experiencing at the time.

The imposed isolation of writing at home led Stidworthy (who helped compose the album’s guitar parts and plays the piano on 'Landers') to “create little worlds with the songs”. The keen brushstrokes of all three members combined feels languidly tactile, replete with profound meaning that is almost archeological in its sense of economy and personal touch. This sense of relaxed exploration could only occur because of the mutual trust between the trio: Stidworthy adds, “I could go really far in cultivating a mood for a demo and send it to them and know that it could only improve.” Meanwhile, Cartwright (who also plays guitar on the project and coded Supercollider synth parts in the studio), found that he was subliminally incorporating drum ideas and patterns from when he first started playing as a teen, embedded deep in his muscle memory.

The resulting record delights in its aversion to superficiality. Although Darcy’s characteristically wry voice remains front-and-center, shifting from decisive to distressed and detached, his lyrical invocations remain only the first key to a much more intricate universe of sound and longing. Individual tracks often feel like small revelations, and each element contributes to a streamlined and yet poetically expansive set of meanings, as the rhythms of the punchy and exuberant guitar parts, urgent basslines, and unexpected drum patterns all tangle with each other in an elegant dance. Much greater than the sum of its parts, Deep in View is an album of artful and energetic post-punk that sparks novel interpretations with every listen, like an object that takes on new shape with each angle from which you hold it.
