SAM JR. (BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE) SHARES SEBASTIEN GRAINGER REMIX

Recently, Sam Jr. (aka, Sam Goldberg Jr.) unveiled his self-titled debut LP, and today’s he’s paired up with Sebastien Grainger (King Sebby) for a remix of album single “You Lock The Door I Broke The Window”.

Sam says, “I reached out to Sebastien Grainger to see if he’d be interested in doing a remix, we’d collaborated in the past and it had been a while since we’d been in contact so I was excited when he sent the thumbs up emoji. We decided ‘You Lock The Door You Broke The Window’ was best suited as it has a lot of fun elements like cowbells and saxophones with a nice grooving beat. Pretty quickly he sent over a version with a reggae dancehall vocal that fit really well. He told me he just googled ‘Free reggae acapella vocal samples’. It fit perfect, I loved it. When it was time to submit the remix I was nervous about the vocal sample. It said free but to be safe I emailed the person who uploaded the vocal to no response. After some digging Sebastien found out the vocal belonged to…Beenie Man. Fuck. We had to submit the song in 24 hours and at that point there was no way we’d clear it in time. We thought of just trying to release it crossing our fingers but DSP’s would have blocked it. Tech is too strong in 2022. Anyhow I would have loved seeing Sam Jr featuring Beenie Man in print. Oh well maybe next time.”

MORE ABOUT SAM JR.’S DEBUT LP
Fuzzed out guitars with psychedelic laced wah wahs and bongos?? And flutes? rock oozing buzzed out hippie rock ? Evil nihilist ooze-rock slacker fuzz? There’s a lot of play within that framework of Sam Jr.’s new self-titled debut so we’ll leave it to you to decide for yourself what Sam Jr. is all about when the appropriate moment comes.

“My concept for awhile making this record was actually ‘What would the Dude’s band from The Big Lebowski sound like?’” laughs Goldberg, the titular architect behind this long-overdue solo stepping-out. “I’m not sure it landed there at all, but I think I was trying to harness the easygoing nature and spirit of that character. I’m a hardwired optimist and a mellow person overall, and I wanted that to come across in the songs.”

Meantime, you’re probably wondering how such a confident ‘debut’ could pop out of nowhere. Well, that’s because it didn’t. This Samuel Goldberg, Jr., chap looks oddly familiar, right? And that name… it rolls off the tongue nicely, yes, but it also rings a bell. So where exactly have you seen this guy before? Because you know you’ve seen him before.

You have indeed seen Sam Goldberg before. And you’ve seen him pretty much everywhere, that’s where. If you’ve kept even a casual eye on the Canadian pop landscape for the past 25 years or so, in fact, Sam Goldberg, Jr., has been hiding in plain sight the whole time as a vital member of an uncanny number of bands with whom you’re either already acquainted or – and no judgement here – should perhaps be ashamed of yourself in hindsight for previously failing to get acquainted with.

Today, Emma Worely releases her new LP, Sentimentalist, via Victory Pool Records, and shares the new video for album track, “Jigsaw”. The track itself, is “wondering where someone who once meant the world to me is now,” says Worley. “It is a bittersweet reflection on a relationship that felt eternal, at the time. It was the kind of connection that illuminates parts of yourself you didn’t even realize you had been missing - especially when you’re young and learning the depth to which you can feel and experience. I used to think that kindred meant forever. But everything changes, people come and go. This song is kind of an homage to that.”

MORE ABOUT EMMA WORLEY + SENTIMENTALIST
‘He gave me a call/ at the foot of a cliff / To tell me he’d done it/ and he’d obviously lived’ recounts Emma Worley. These are the opening lines from the singer/songwriters’ debut release Sentimentalist, a poignant and revealing statement that aims to inform us of the depth and raw expression that is to follow. Her voice gently glides above an elegant arrangement, eventually leading the listener to a rich landscape of texture and sound. The idea of a free fall into the unknown is something that Worley is no stranger to. Following a difficult separation from her long-time partner, artistic conspirator and co-producer, Worley dove headfirst into a new world where she was caught, and raised back up by a community of like minded artists and peers.

Hailing from Guelph, Ontario, and now residing in Toronto, Worley spent many years dedicated to a career as an emerging visual artist. Upon graduating from the Ontario College of Art and Design University, Worley garnered attention for her sculpture/installation work through exhibitions, installations, and residencies at various high-profile institutions. However, despite her burgeoning success in the visual-arts world, Worley found herself compulsively drawn towards creating the material that would become her debut album, Sentimentalist. Pulling from lived experience, triumph, heartbreak, and everything in between, the wisdom and grace of this collection is telling of Worley's dedication to relatable storytelling and emotional finesse.

Worley began laying the foundation for Sentimentalist with Miles Breithaupt (Babygirl, Father Moth) in the Spring of 2020. Through a chance meeting with bass player and future collaborator, Ben Whiteley (The Weather Station, Julia Jacklin), the project’s intent began to grow. Worley recalls first seeing Whiteley perform alongside Julia Jacklin on her NPR Tiny Desk performance, in which she lovingly refers to him as ‘Beautiful Ben’. The next day, as fate would have it, a chance meeting at a coffee shop directed Whiteley into Worley’s orbit. Soon after, he became heavily involved in the ongoing recording project.

Through mutual friends, Worley invited up and coming producer and session musician Jasper Smith (Georgia Harmer, Jeremie Albino) into the equation. Smith's ear for subtle arrangements and celestial scoring became an integral element in shaping the sonic character of the project. With everyone’s touring schedules put on hold due to the pandemic, this new dream team of like minded studio virtuosos set out on framing Worleys expertly crafted material. Throughout the experience, Worley recalls the camaraderie of the group as unflinching. She fondly reflects on a moment in the alley behind Whiteley's family home, where Whiteley used his phone to record her singing the seed ideas for string parts. From there, Whiteley developed the orchestral arrangements on which he plays cello and double bass. He then sent these recordings to genius string composer Drew Jurecka (Dua Lipa, Bahamas), who brought them to life with viola and violin.

The power of Sentimentalist exists within the restraint and subtlety of the arrangements, which frame the poetic lyrical twists and turns of the dream-like world that Worley has cultivated. There is a playful swagger which harkens to the likes of Rickie Lee Jones, while maintaining the cloak and dagger heart wrench of Leonard Cohen. This record feels effortless, yet finely sculpted, and reaches well beyond the expected confines of a first release, rather showcasing the maturity and confidence of a songwriter deep into their catalogue. It proves that sometimes a leap of faith can plunge you deep into a new world of endless possibility.

This Friday, Reuben and The Dark will release the Coming Like A Storm EP, which finds bandleader Reuben Bullock reflecting on the slow dissolution of a relationship. The three song collection captures some of Reuben's most vivid, reflexive songwriting, pairing anthemic melodies with emotive instrumental arrangements. ‘You said you want to go where nobody has been / And dance on the edge of oblivion / Well I was in a forest under your skin / And darling there’s a dark cloud coming in’ sings Bullock over driving percussion, fast-paced acoustic fingerpicking, and dramatic swirling synths on the ominous title track.

Today, Reuben and The Dark is sharing the new video for that title track, “Coming Like A Storm,” directed by Reuben and Carly Foulkes, filmed and edited by Jay Lawrence. "This isthe last song I wrote for a big batch of tunes that will make up our next full length,” says Reuben. “It wrote itself, as a good song does. Something about the way the world feels so ominous right now. The last couple years...the uncertainty of the future. There is a tension in this one, I wanted to capture the feelings of both confinement and freedom. I also decided to work with producer Joel Shearer, honing in on the most important parts of a song...the heart and pulse. This is one of the most pared back of all our releases...but it still feels full and larger than life.”

“Carly Foulkes and I co-directed the video. I wanted a wild Mad Max style video, with hundreds of feral humans just chasing through an empty desert. We landed on such a beautiful collage of stunning vignettes. This video was made on almost no budget and feels like a million dollars. All our desert friends really rallied to pull this off and we are so grateful for our crew!”

On the video, Foulkes says “I have always been inspired by dream state imagery. We decided to use the Joshua tree desert as a backdrop because the landscape already lends itself to surrealism. Working with dancer and choreographer Maija Knapp was incredible. She brought such raw passion and force to the project.”
