“‘I Was Neon’ has the feeling of an unrestricted exhale…Jacklin revels in both appreciation and apprehension of the most vibrant version of herself. – NPR

“Julia Jacklin’s music is a gradual accumulation of small, sharp lyrical details, and “Lydia Wears a Cross” is full of them. The arrangement is sparse – drum machine, echoing stabs of piano – to spotlight Jacklin’s storytelling.” – THE NEW YORK TIMES

“Lydia Wears A Cross” is a slow-building number. It starts with Jacklin singing over a rickety drum-machine, but by the time it’s over, we get strings and synths and drums coming in from every angle. – STEREOGUM

“Rather than disavowing her much more eager young self with “Lydia Wears a Cross,” Jacklin takes a loving approach, clarifying her primary-school perspective with the wisdom of growing up.” – PITCHFORK

Today, Julia Jacklin shares another taste of her highly anticipated new album PRE PLEASURE, set for release on August 26 on Polyvinyl Record Co. The driving “Love, Try Not To Let Go” arrives with a spontaneous and joyful one-shot video filmed in Melbourne, co-directed with Nick Mckk, and featuring a collaboration with visual artist Juliet Bryant

“‘Love, Try Not To Let Go’ was written one night during the recording period in my apartment in Montreal,” says Jacklin. “It’s the first song I’ve ever written fully on piano. It’s the first time I’ve played piano on a record. I thought someone better would redo the take but we kept it so now I’m officially a pianist. We recorded it the next day. I made everyone watch the running scene from Rocky beforehand.”

In a way only she can, Jacklin skates along airy keys and crisp drums, before blossoming into thundering guitar chords under a full-voiced declaration: ‘I need you to believe me when I said I found it hard / to keep myself from floating away/try not to let go’. The video builds on Julia’s joyful visual palette for the record with an unmistakably Melbourne video, set against a backdrop of retro suburbia against the city skyline. Starring an unassuming neighbourhood cat, Jacklin skips down a quiet street singing the energetic hook: ‘try not to let go’.

"Love, Try Not To Let Go" builds on from instant fan favourites “I Was Neon” and “Lydia Wears A Cross”, which received a wave of love on release globally, reviewed by the likes of Pitchfork, The New York Times, Stereogum, NME and NPR Music, with media and fans all welcoming the return of Jacklin and news of her third album release. “I Was Neon” also received serious radio acclaim, with the track being added to full rotation on triple j and international support from BBC Radio 6, BBC Radio 1, SiriusXMU, KEXP and KCRW.

Since releasing her debut album Don’t Let the Kids Win in 2016, the Melbourne-via-Blue Mountains singer-songwriter has carved out a fearsome reputation as a direct lyricist, willing to excavate the parameters of intimacy and agency in songs both stark and raw, loose, and playful. If her folky debut announced those intentions, and the startling 2019 follow-up Crushing drew in listeners uncomfortably close, PRE PLEASURE is the sound of Jacklin gently loosening her grip.

The new album, Jacklin’s third, is a masterclass in songwriting and cements her status as one of the most important songwriters of our time. PRE PLEASURE was conceived upon returning home from a mammoth Crushing world tour, and finished in a frantic few months of recording in Montreal with co-producer Marcus Paquin (The Weather Station, The National). The 10-track offering sees Jacklin once again putting intensely personal thoughts and feelings to paper whilst expanding on her signature sound; and, at the same time, attempting to inject some joy back into the process.

“Once music becomes your job, you can lose the purity of music fandom. I spent the last two years trying to reconnect with that. I didn’t play much, I just listened. Especially to a lot of big pop music like Celine Dion, Robyn and Luther Vandross – music that wasn’t so heavy, big feelings, big production. You lose sight of what putting on a big, beautiful song can do.”

PRE PLEASURE reflects this source inspiration and showcase Jacklin’s willingness to explore new terrain as both a producer and songwriter, once again presenting her most authentic and genuine self and translating it into deeply personal, timeless songs.

Jacklin is due to tour North America, UK, and Europe from August this year. The tour will span several months and see her perform at her biggest venues to date, including iconic rooms like the 3000-capacity Roundhouse in London, and 1800-capacity Brooklyn Steel in New York. Jacklin will also make stops in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.

“Lydia Wears A Cross” is a simmering slow-build of a track that crescendos to a swirling vortex of muted tones, a reckoning with childhood memories that’s patient and painstakingly crafted. – PAPER

“Lydia Wears a Cross” could have been a daunting lead single, but Jacklin steps with an impressive lightness across a rolling indie-pop arrangement. – BILLBOARD

“Here [‘I Was Neon’] she puts the pedal to the floor with a few chugging power chords and a hypnotic refrain…The simple, repetitive structure makes this song the perfect festival set closer.” – THE GUARDIAN

REUBEN AND THE DARK ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM, IN LIEU OF LIGHT

Reuben and the Dark has long nurtured a bond with its audience that transcends the power of human communion with music as the chosen vehicle. Today, the spirited folk-rock outfit announces its fourth album, In Lieu of Light, a collection of songs as bare and unguarded as any frontman Reuben Bullock has offered before. A self-portrait of the Joshua Tree-bound skateboarding singer-songwriter, the album’s first single "Wanderer" ponders questions of love and the gift of loneliness, with the electric din of guitars and rollicking drums as the getaway vehicle. Accompanied by a music video that peers into the desert backdrop of the recording of In Lieu of Light, “Wanderer” is a melancholy anthem for the height, and the fall, of summer.

"Wanderer is a reflection on loneliness. I like the duality of it,” says Reuben. “Seems to be something we all worry about a lot lately... being alone... But also it’s a state that has always been a platform for growth for me. This was a quiet piano tune at first. I left the house during a recording session and returned to Brock Geiger completely transforming it. I never thought this song could be uptempo! But I love how it sounds now."

Recalling the spontaneity of the band’s resounding 2013 arrival Funeral Sky, the eleven songs of In Lieu of Light are both humble and vast, flourishing from the simplicity of gentle piano and guitar – at times favouring the delicate frame of its intimacy, at others conceding to the anthems in its melodies. It is honest heart-based music, wide open yet lonesome, and begging connection.

“This album had no expectations put on it, it felt very free of form in any creative way. It is a snapshot of songs I was writing at a particular time, when recording them felt like a necessary letting go,” recounts Reuben. “There was a magic to that experimentation that felt natural to me.”

In Lieu of Light was recorded throughout 2021 when at times for many the world seemed at an excruciating standstill. Reuben’s pensive lyrics, always known for their environmental resonance, turn more inward here. There is an element of personal, deeply relatable soul-searching at play, a perseverance through darkness, grief, escapism, and a subtle celebration of this despair that we have all confronted.

PRE-ORDER / PRE-SAVE IN LIEU OF LIGHT HERE

From the hymnal meditation of “Read Your Mind” to the wayfinding reflections of “Traveler of Swords”, In Lieu of Light is at once Reuben and the Dark’s most varied yet most unified album to date. Bullock’s commitment to a more relaxed mode of songwriting removed one of the few remaining barriers between the band and its inextricably devoted audience. The cumulative, exultant power of his songs, be it shared joy or shared sadness, elevates the experience of In Lieu of Light to a heightened level.

Recorded by Graham Lessard in Calgary at OCL Studios, Brock Geiger at Reuben’s home studio in Joshua Tree, and Joel Shearer in Los Angeles, In Lieu of Light finds Reuben in harmony with the studio as his instrument, and the band with its intuition and embellishments.

In addition to songs from the recently released Coming Like A Storm EP, In Lieu of Light includes collaboration with the Kainai-Bloodtribe Bullhorn Singers, who have been sharing the stage with Reuben and the Dark on recent performances. See the band’s upcoming dates below.

COUNTRY SOUL SINGER-SONGWRITER ON TOUR IN CANADA NOW

“Incendiary…Tami Neilson has a distinctive approach, blending soul and rockabilly with a lush country hinterland. KINGMAKER rips into misogyny in all its irksome forms, and each number’s so hooky you wonder how you didn’t already know it.”  – MOJO (****)

“Neilson’s statement-making album about feminism and subverting traditions. Kingmaker is a satisfying middle finger to the patriarchy that has never felt timelier” No Depression

“the queen of Kiwi country at her imperious best - The Guardian (****)

“soulful countrypolitan and rockabilly stylings, dynamic stage presence and hurricane-magnitude singing voice have been turning any head within listening distance.” - The Toronto Star

“Kingmaker” Video Still

Award-winning country soul singer-songwriter Tami Neilson is proud to announce today’s long awaited release of her brilliantly subversive fifth studio album, KINGMAKER, available everywhere now via Outside Music. Hailed by The Guardian in a four-starred rave as “effortless…the Queen of Kiwi country at her imperious best,” KINGMAKER includes the cinematic, album-opening title track, “Kingmaker”, joined by an equally epic official music video premiering today.

“I wanted ‘Kingmaker’ to feel like a movie theme that plays as the opening credits unfold,” Neilson says, “so that the songs take the listener through the highs and lows of a story unfolding, more like a movie soundtrack than adhering to one genre or style.”

“It felt so fitting to work with an incredible team of women on this video for a song of empowerment, led by Director Alyx Duncan and Producer Emma Mortimer. Alyx really poured her heart and soul into making KINGMAKER come to life with her incredible attention to detail and she suggested approaching the owner of the historic St. James Theatre located in the heart of downtown Auckland, New Zealand. The once-grand theatre that had hosted Queen Elizabeth herself in 1963 is now crumbling and dilapidated, shuttered for years as work to renovate it came to a standstill. This created the perfect symbolism for KINGMAKER- a group of women, alive and powerful, rising from the ashes of the old colonial institutions that once excluded and oppressed them.”

Known far and wide as an electrifying live act, Neilson marks the arrival of KINGMAKER with a wide-ranging world tour, which is currently making its way through Canada. Full tour dates can be found below, for tickets please visit www.tamineilson.com/tour

KINGMAKER was previously heralded by such tracks as the striking “Baby You’re A Gun” and the rebellious honky-tonk anthem, “Careless Woman”, the latter of which arrived alongside by a spectacular official music video – co-starring New Zealand-based actress Olivia Tennet (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Power Rangers RPM) and Ling Zhang of Parris Goebel’s esteemed Royal Family Dance Crew

The album also sees Neilson joining forces with the legendary Willie Nelson for the timeless country duet, “Beyond The Stars”, accompanied by an official music video – directed by Neilson’s brother Todd and featuring exclusive footage filmed earlier this year at Austin, TX’s SXSW Music Festival and Nelson’s world famous Luck Reunion in Luck, TX.

“Beyond The Stars” – which immediately hit the Official NZ Music Chart’s “Top 40 Hot Singles” and “Top 20 NZ Hot Singles” in Neilson’s adopted home country of New Zealand – was further met by critical applause from media outlets around the world.

As noted, this spring saw Neilson lighting up SXSW with a series of dynamic show-stopping performances, including a live performance alongside Nelson at his 10th anniversary Luck Reunion event, the latter captured in a new short film, “TAMI NEILSON’S UNBELIEVABLE ONCE IN A LIFETIME OUT OF BODY AMAZING EXPERIENCE AT LUCK REUNION,” streaming now HERE

MORE ABOUT KINGMAKER
Recorded at Neil Finn’s Roundhead Studios in Neilson’s adopted hometown of Auckland, New Zealand, KINGMAKER marks Neilson’s most provocative and powerful collection to date. Fueled by the world-changing events of the past two years, the album’s songs expose and explode the patriarchal structures that pervade the music industry, family life, and society as a whole. While Neilson has previously explored these themes on such acclaimed LPs as 2018’s SASSAFRASS! (hailed by PopMatters as “a potent social and political statement dressed up in catchy melodies and infectious choruses that sometimes belie the more serious elements taking place deep within the choruses.”), the new album draws these challenging ideas out even further, shining a dramatic musical light on what the late bell hooks referred to as “the politics of domination” that render women nameless and voiceless. Songs like “Baby, You’re A Gun” and the cinematic title track see Neilson giving her own resonant voice to women everywhere – to their strength, power, fierceness, and resilience in the face of structural and cultural barriers to their full participation in society.

Born in Toronto, Tami Neilson has been performing for as long as she can remember, first alongside her parents and brothers in the Canadian country music family band, The Neilsons. From being cradled as a baby in the arms of Roy Orbison, singing with Kitty Wells at the age of 10, and opening for Johnny Cash in her pajamas at 18, she had already led an extraordinary life before leaving North America in 2007 to start her own family on the other side of the world in New Zealand, where she has resided ever since. It was there Neilson forged her own artistic path as a critically acclaimed solo artist and songwriter, busking on the streets of Auckland and performing in countless clubs before ultimately earning wide-ranging applause and myriad NZ-based awards for her booming vocal power and inventive, strikingly personal approach to country, rockabilly, and soul. 2020’s CHICKABOOM! proved her most internationally praised work thus far, with No Depression declaring, “Neilson’s phrasing is impeccable…she gets inside the song, turns it inside and out, and makes it her own. She can soar on the rockers, she can deliver the heart-rending ache of a ballad of lost love, and she can capture the playfulness of a schoolyard rhyme with a joyous seriousness.” With her tireless work ethic, seemingly infinite musical gifts, and subversive songwriting approach, Tami Neilson has already found extraordinary success on her own terms. Now, with the groundbreaking KINGMAKER, she takes her music and message even further, using her one-of-a-kind voice to rattle cages and change the game for those who have been denied their rightful place at the table for far too long.

 MORE PRAISE FOR TAMI NEILSON

“Tami Neilson should be this year's Yola. The Canada-born, New Zealand-based singer has boots made for walking, a beehive hairdo fit for a Sixties girl group, and a voice that can take a door off its hinges…She's overdue for a new album. Or maybe she's just waiting for the rest of the world to finally catch up.” – THE AUSTIN CHRONICLE

“One of today’s most dynamic purveyors of blues, classic country and all manner of musical styles in-between.” – AMERICAN SONGWRITER

“Tami Neilson has strong and powerful pipes, one of those great soul shouter voices that preach the gospel of great music at every turn… Confronting injustice with sass is punk and badass in the best sense of the words and Neilson does it with aplomb.” – POPMATTERS

“Tami Neilson and Willie Nelson meditate on heavy losses in their new duet…‘Beyond the Stars’ is a mournful ballad in 3/4 time and it takes a close look at the grief brought on by a loved one’s death. Neilson wrote the song after the 2015 loss of her father and, while Nelson acts as her father’s voice in his verse, it takes on an extra poignancy coming so soon after the death of his sister and bandmate Bobbie Nelson.” – ROLLING STONE

“‘Beyond The Stars’ taps into the painful feelings of longing to be with the one you've lost. Neilson and Nelson's vocals blend beautifully on the emotional and poetic song, anchored by a soaring string section.” – THE BOOT

“‘Beyond the Stars’ works to help remedy all loss, giving hope for a reunification someday in the future in the eternal dwelling of the cosmos, delivered via the timeless tones of Willie’s guitar Trigger.” – SAVING COUNTRY MUSIC

“Country music gold. And an absolute tear-jerker.”  – OUTSIDER
