Arctic Soul, The Trade-Offs' iconic brand, is distinguished by the deep brooding voice of Josh Qaumariaq and soulful backing of Jeff Maurice, Galen Pelley, and Michael Eckert set against blues and rock and roll sounds echoing from the depth of the Northern tundra.

On their upcoming sophomore album, let go, give in, fall down, the band have refined their unique sound with a blend of deeply personal Inuktitut and English lyrics singing the Arctic blues about universal themes of darkness and light and closeness and isolation. The lead track on the album, “Crowberry Hill”, ends with the line ‘now you know, baby where I come from’

“Crowberry Hill” is a song “I wrote about my experiences of living in Iqaluit, berry picking with my grandma, and the things I have seen and heard growing up,” says Qaumariaq. “I hope that by the end of the song you will know a little bit more about the place I come from, and the hard lives of Inuit.”

MORE ABOUT let go, give in, fall down
The lyrics “Crowberry Hill” sums up the spirit of let go, give in, fall down, the Iqaluit band’s second full-length record. Due out on November 4, 2022 via Aakuluk Music, let go, give in, fall down – in both its title and in the content of its nine tracks — is about how to bend, but not break; it’s about how to survive and find hope in the North amid loneliness, isolation, and deaths of close relations.

“It’s just the feeling of the album,” says lead singer and guitarist Josh Qaumariaq. “From losing people to being alone, you just gotta let go, give in, and fall down.”

There’s solace and joy to be found here, too. Lead single “Qanuirunniilaarmijuk” is a patient, smoky alt-country sway that switches between English and Inuktitut lyrics, while Michael Eckert’s slide guitar whines and croons in the background. “The title means, ‘things will be okay again,’” says Qaumariaq. “Things get tough, and you have to remember to say, ‘Okay, this is crazy right now, but it’ll calm down.’ I thought it was important to put it out right away, especially for Inuit.”

The blues rock stomp of second single “Crowberry Hill” is a love letter to Qaumariaq’s home, and the rituals, both simple and critical, that he and his kin have built there. ‘Hunting down young ring seals/Glassy lakes and long big fields/Now you know, baby, where I come from!’ he calls on the chorus. Across the record, Qaumariaq howls and roars like the Arctic wind, then broods and glows like late-night embers in the hearth, while the band swaggers between rootsy, earnest alt-country, -rock, -blues, and -soul.

The Trade-Offs—Iqaluit-based members Qaumariaq and Jeffrey Maurice (bass, backing vocals), along with Toronto collaborators Eckert (pedal steel) and Galen Pelley (drums)—recorded let go, give in, fall down over six days at Toronto’s Orange Lounge Studio with producer JP Maurice (Jeffrey’s cousin). Jace Lasek mixed the record and Philip Gosselin mastered it.

Qaumariaq says it’s the record he and Maurice have always wanted to create, finally pinning down the sound they’d been chasing for 10+ years as a band. “We finally feel so good because we sound like ourselves,” says Qaumariaq. “This album means a lot to me, and I finally feel like I have something that feels like me.”

Today, The Secret Beach (the musical moniker of Micah Erenberg) is releasing his new album, Songs From The Secret Beach, courtesy of Victory Pool Records. To celebrate, we’re treated to another album cut, “Promise You”, a “straight up love song,” says Erenberg. “I wanted to convey the message that no matter what you’re going through, or how you feel, true love persists. When you know, you know, and usually you feel like you want to tell the people that you love just how true it is.

“It doesn’t matter how much money you have (or don’t have), it doesn’t matter what your plans are, you’ll make it work for love. I wanted to make sure that the song could be conveyed in a person-person sense, but also in a person-community/family sense.

“Sometimes it’s hard to show your love for people, and that’s why we feel like we need to tell people that we love them as much as we can. If there’s anything that I want folks to take away from this tune, it's that it's important to tell people that you love them! And to know that those who love you will be with you through thick and thin, probably more than you think.

“I guess I had gone through some hard times when I wrote this song, and I was feeling particularly thankful for those that had stuck with me and supported me, so I wanted to make a song that could show them that they made a big difference in helping me.”

MORE ABOUT SONGS FROM THE SECRET BEACH
The Secret Beach is the moniker used by Micah Erenberg whose refreshingly plainspoken candour has become a dominant through-line in the singer / songwriter’s ever-expanding catalogue. Whether releasing records under his own name or lending his talents as a producer, Erenberg exists in a constant whirlpool of creation. Erenberg’s latest offering, Songs From The Secret Beach, finds beauty in the mundanity of daily life. Produced by Erenberg, and mixed by revered producer/engineer Rob Schnapf (Kurt Vile, Beck, Cass Mccombs), this collection is at once an exercise in restraint, as well as an arrestingly lush exploration of sonic possibility.

The wisdom of this record exists between the cracks. There is nuance that could easily be overlooked. However, Songs From The Secret Beach takes a courageous and uninhibited stab at honesty.

WATCH / SHARE “GOD IS” HERE

Of his process, Erenberg states, "A lot of music inherently mimics other music. It’s just natural because there is so much music out there. It’s impossible not to be inspired and shaped by the music you hear, so I try to draw more of my inspiration from non-musical things; physical experiences, conversations, feelings, sensations, and inner reflections, in an attempt to achieve some form of genuine originality.” This exercise is clearly displayed on the track "God Is", where Erenberg offers Lennon-esq narratives of the co-existence of god and man in raw glamor-less situations. Similarly, on the title track, Erenberg delivers a juxtaposition between a blissfully playful arrangement, and a whimsically disguised commentary on the fragility of human existence. This is a common place practice for the singer-songwriter, who seamlessly manoeuvres between carefree melodicism and heavy subject matter.

Since the release of his 2016 debut, Erenberg has toured extensively in support of his solo pursuits. Previously signed to the now defunct Canadian indie label Sleepless Records (Michael Rault, July Talk) for his well-regarded 2019 release Love Is Gonna Find You, Erenberg’s brand of unabashed lyrical honesty, and vulnerable talk-like delivery has earned admiration from audiences across North America and Europe.

JULIA JACKLIN NEW LP, PRE PLEASURE, PRODUCED BY MARCUS PAQUIN, OUT THIS FRIDAY VIA POLYVINYL

WORLD TOUR BEGINS THIS AUGUST WITH STOPS IN TORONTO, MONTREAL, AND VANCOUVER

“‘I Was Neon’ has the feeling of an unrestricted exhale…Jacklin revels in both appreciation and apprehension of the most vibrant version of herself. – NPR

“Julia Jacklin’s music is a gradual accumulation of small, sharp lyrical details, and “Lydia Wears a Cross” is full of them. The arrangement is sparse – drum machine, echoing stabs of piano – to spotlight Jacklin’s storytelling.” – THE NEW YORK TIMES

“Lydia Wears A Cross” is a slow-building number. It starts with Jacklin singing over a rickety drum-machine, but by the time it’s over, we get strings and synths and drums coming in from every angle. – STEREOGUM

“Rather than disavowing her much more eager young self with “Lydia Wears a Cross,” Jacklin takes a loving approach, clarifying her primary-school perspective with the wisdom of growing up.” – PITCHFORK

Just ahead of her highly-awaited new album PRE PLEASURE, Australia’s Julia Jacklin shares a latest taste of the forthcoming album with new single, “Be Careful With Yourself”. Driving guitars usher you into the hazy, dreamlike soundscape of “Be Careful With Yourself”, while Jacklin’s effortless vocals cut through rhythmic drums and airy harmonies. Equal parts honest and vulnerable, the song is a cathartic release and a love song for the ages.

“Be Careful With Yourself” follows fan favorites, "Love, Try Not To Let Go”“I Was Neon”, and “Lydia Wears A Cross”, which received a wave of love on release globally, reviewed by the likes of Pitchfork, The New York Times, Stereogum, NME and NPR Music, with media and fans all welcoming the return of Jacklin and news of her third album release. “I Was Neon” also received serious radio acclaim, with the track being added to full rotation on triple j and international support from BBC Radio 6, BBC Radio 1, SiriusXMU, KEXP and KCRW.

Since releasing her debut album Don’t Let the Kids Win in 2016, the Melbourne-via-Blue Mountains singer-songwriter has carved out a fearsome reputation as a direct lyricist, willing to excavate the parameters of intimacy and agency in songs both stark and raw, loose, and playful. If her folky debut announced those intentions, and the startling 2019 follow-up Crushing drew in listeners uncomfortably close, PRE PLEASURE is the sound of Jacklin gently loosening her grip.

The new album, Jacklin’s third, is a masterclass in songwriting and cements her status as one of the most important songwriters of our time. PRE PLEASURE was conceived upon returning home from a mammoth Crushing world tour, and finished in a frantic few months of recording in Montreal with co-producer Marcus Paquin (The Weather Station, The National). The 10-track offering sees Jacklin once again putting intensely personal thoughts and feelings to paper whilst expanding on her signature sound; and, at the same time, attempting to inject some joy back into the process.

“Once music becomes your job, you can lose the purity of music fandom. I spent the last two years trying to reconnect with that. I didn’t play much, I just listened. Especially to a lot of big pop music like Celine Dion, Robyn and Luther Vandross – music that wasn’t so heavy, big feelings, big production. You lose sight of what putting on a big, beautiful song can do.”

PRE PLEASURE reflects this source inspiration and showcase Jacklin’s willingness to explore new terrain as both a producer and songwriter, once again presenting her most authentic and genuine self and translating it into deeply personal, timeless songs.

Jacklin is due to tour Canada, the US, UK and Europe from August this year. The tour will span several months and see her perform at her biggest venues to date, including iconic rooms like the 3000-capacity Roundhouse in London, and 1800-capacity Brooklyn Steel in New York.

Both of Jacklin’s aforementioned albums Don’t Let The Kids Win and Crushing, resonated strongly across the globe on release. Crushing debuted into the Top 10 of the ARIA Album Chart and was included in more than 20 Best of Lists for 2019 Albums including Pitchfork, Uncut, the New York Times, Junkee, i-D, Rolling Stone and The Guardian. It was also nominated for 6 ARIA Awards and won the AIR Award for ‘Best Independent Blues & Roots Album’ in 2020, as well as a US Independent Music (Libera) Award for ‘Best Folk & Bluegrass Album’.

“Lydia Wears A Cross” is a simmering slow-build of a track that crescendos to a swirling vortex of muted tones, a reckoning with childhood memories that’s patient and painstakingly crafted. – PAPER

“Lydia Wears a Cross” could have been a daunting lead single, but Jacklin steps with an impressive lightness across a rolling indie-pop arrangement. – BILLBOARD

“Here [‘I Was Neon’] she puts the pedal to the floor with a few chugging power chords and a hypnotic refrain…The simple, repetitive structure makes this song the perfect festival set closer.” – THE GUARDIAN
