Today, Bells Larsen (he/they, il/iel) is celebrating the release of their new album, Good Grief, with the new video for album track “Teenage Love” from director Dominique Montesano. The LP, Good Grief, was inspired by “the sudden loss of my first love, who passed away when I was nineteen,” says Larsen. “The music is steeped in queer love, young love, and lost love. I knew I wanted the aesthetic of the ‘Teenage Love’ music video to reflect all of these things. Dom, the director, and I wandered around some parks in Montreal and asked folks—both people in our lives and total strangers—to tell us what love meant to them. The dreamy super 8 mixed film mixed with the track itself makes for an intimate ‘home video’ kind of vibe, which is exactly what I want to emulate not only in the song, but in the album as a whole too. I hope that people can see their own stories reflected in mine, or in the ones shared in the video."

MORE ABOUT GOOD GRIEF
Larsen started writing for the album at the age of nineteen, during what would prove to be the start of a hugely transitional time in their life. In the five years since the songs on Good Grief began to take shape, Larsen has moved across the country, studied philosophy at a small liberal arts college, dropped out, and then moved across the country again. Larsen’s life was also put on pause after the sudden death of their first love. Since this person’s passing, Larsen has been writing songs that attempt to express this person’s spirit and create a tangible container for their memory. “This loss left so many people with so many unanswered questions, myself included,” Larsen admits. “I haven’t always arrived at answers to these questions, but songwriting has provided me with a way to at least ask.” 

While demoing this collection of songs at an artist residency in Banff, it dawned on Larsen that the experience of loss exists outside of losing someone; we mourn places and memories, too. “The definition of the word “loss” changes all the time for me,” says Larsen. “What does it mean to have truly lost someone? Something? If I lose something, how do I know for certain that I’ve lost it for good? As I reflected on the experience of losing my first love, I wrote songs that allowed me to explore these trains of thought.” The result was a record that bridges the gaps between I, you, and we to narrate an intentional mediation on what it means to experience grief as young queer person.

The first voice we hear on Larsen’s album is that of their first love; “Ready?” she asks. As if to answer her, Good Grief then begins with an audio recording from 2013 of Larsen and their high school friends singing Sufjan Stevens’ song "The Predatory Wasp Of The Palisades Is Out To Get Us!" around a campfire. “Loss is a wasp’s sting,” says Larsen. “This Sufjan song has been dear to me for a long time, but I understood it very differently after my first love passed away.” 

When Larsen was recording Good Grief, they sought out old voice memos to use as interludes in between songs. “I wanted to make the music sound more human,” Larsen admits. “Eventually, I found the campfire recording from the tenth grade, and I was immediately struck by the fact that the most prominent voice is that of my first love.” Larsen edited the clip down to about thirty seconds in order to highlight several lines in the song which are, to them, the most poignant with regards to the theme of loss. Larsen shares: “When the record starts and my ex says ‘ready?’, part of me knows that she’s asking my friends and I if we were ready to sing around that fire all those years ago, but there’s also a part of me that feels like – in some way – she’s asking grown-up-me if I’m ‘ready’ to share my songs about grief now.”

The album quickly unfurls like a bildungsroman, touching on love, loss, growing up, growing old, moving on, and moving forward. Songs like “Teenage Love” and “Sweater Weather'' conjure vivid landscapes of memory through Larsen’s lyricism, which is conversational and inviting, while being intimate and candid. Community and friendship are central to the song “People Who Mean So Much To Me”, which features vocals from Larsen’s close friend and fellow musician, Leith Ross. Larsen explains: “this song is composed of vignettes about three distinct relationships that I had fostered throughout the span of a single year. I wrote it during the pandemic, while I was really missing community.” To Larsen, the song is a reminder to them that, even when they’re feeling lonely and isolated, they will continue to cross paths with wonderful people and build meaningful relationships.

Larsen co-produced the record with fellow musician Graham Ereaux. Good Grief was recorded at Ereaux’s studio in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, where Larsen and Ereaux were joined by multi-instrumentalist Evan Matthews. “There was such an advantage to bringing my songs to two people who are not intimately connected to my experiences. Neither Evan nor Graham listened to my songs as artifacts of grief, but rather, they heard them as compositional elements.” With the record in hand, Larsen enlisted Howard Bilerman to mix the record, back home in Montreal. 

The five years that it took to write Good Grief encompass so many aspects of Larsen’s life, capturing a coming-of-age story and documenting an ongoing process – of an artist and of a human being – as they try to navigate the terrain of their existence and that of those around them. It’s an experience of their loss but also honours the person that was lost to them. The record closes with a reprise of the “Wasps” audio recording, marrying the past and present as the old voice memo slowly fades into a newer one. Present-day Larsen sings, “I can tell you I love her each day”: a testament to the fact that their grief is –  finally – good.

Today, Reuben and the Dark’s new LP, In Lieu Of Light, is officially available everywhere courtesy of Arts & Crafts. This collection of songs is as bare and unguarded as any that singer-songwriter Reuben Bullock has offered before. “This album had no expectations put on it, it felt very free of form in a creative way. It is a snapshot of songs I was writing at a particular time, when recording them felt like a necessary letting go,” recounts Reuben. “There was a magic to that experimentation that felt natural to me.”

Recalling the spontaneity of the band’s 2014 debut Funeral Sky, the eleven new songs of In Lieu Of Light are humble and vast, wide open and lonesome, flourishing from the simplicity of gentle piano and guitar – at times favouring the delicate frame of its intimacy, at others conceding to the anthems in its melodies. It is honest heart-based music, what Reuben and the Dark does best – hymnal and cathartic songs that beg the audience’s connection.

In Lieu Of Light was recorded throughout 2021 when the world seemed at an excruciating standstill. Reuben’s pensive lyrics, always known for their environmental resonance, turn more inward on these songs from that period. There is an element of deeply relatable soul-searching at play – perseverance through darkness, grief, escapism, and a subtle celebration of this despair that we have all confronted.

From the meditative mantra of “Read Your Mind” to the wayfinding reflections of “Traveler of Swords,” In Lieu of Light is at once Reuben and the Dark’s most varied yet unified album to date. Bullock’s commitment to a more relaxed mode of songwriting removed one of the few remaining barriers between the band and its inextricably devoted audience. Beginning with the sparse lullaby of “One Two Three,” and bookended by the amorphous beauty of “Little Sunrise,” the album evolves through a sweeping range of emotions with aplomb. At the album’s height, “Wanderer” is freeway folk, with the electric din of guitars and rollicking drums as the getaway vehicle – a self-portrait of the Calgary-bred Joshua Tree-based skateboarding frontman.

Recorded by Graham Lessard in Calgary at OCL Studios, Brock Geiger at Reuben’s studio in Joshua Tree, and Joel Shearer in Los Angeles, In Lieu Of Light finds Reuben in harmony with the studio as his instrument, and the intuitive embellishments of his collaborators. The cumulative, exultant power of his songs, be it shared joy or shared sadness, is perhaps no better reflected than on the three tracks featuring the Kainai-Bloodtribe Bullhorn Singers, a collaboration that Reuben describes as “incredible and heart-expanding.” The reverberant “Timelapse Clouds” pulsates with their rhythmic and vocal accompaniment, elevating the experience of In Lieu of Light to a new level. Reuben shares about the arrival of this record:

In Lieu of Light has come from a strange and unstable time in life. There are those of us who spend time in the darkness to find the light.. to carry that light.. For everyone. This album is a humble offering of that experience.  I believe in the alchemy of emotions and that we can use pain, anxiety, fear and loss to truly feel peace, joy, love and freedom. It is my own way of processing a lot of things happening in the inner and outer spaces of the heart and soul of everything.“

This summer, Ken Yates has been touring across Canada and the U.S. together with Jadea Kelly, Abigail Lapell, Jenny Berkel, Brian Dunne, and Kathleen Edwards supporting his new record, Cerulean, available everywhere now. Today, just before he’s set to return to the road with Stephanie Lambring later this month, the songwriter is sharing the new video for “The Future Is Dead” from director Alex Stephenson.

"When I first sent this song to Alex, he had the idea of combining animation with live action shots using a ‘probe lens’,” says Yates. “We wanted to capture the futile feeling of ‘falling down the rabbit hole’ of the news cycle, and the anxiety that comes from the daily bombardment of information. These days it seems like we're waking up to a new heart break every morning, which at times is so overwhelming it becomes paralyzing. Some days you want to run away from it, some days you want to fight it, and some days you can't help but get dragged down by it. By using a probe lens to film in very small spaces, Alex created these incredible shots of claustrophobic environments for animator Kwan Yi Chan to design a character who's stuck in a loop and essentially running from her own brain.” 

“The song felt like it was about a paranoia and fear of the outside world, and when I asked Ken about it he pretty much confirmed I was right,” says Stephenson. “Since the song has a central character who is trapped by her own misperceptions, it made sense to have a central location that we could start the video by entering at the beginning, and leaving at the end. Starting and beginning with the same object in the same place - albeit with changes that happen to it throughout the story - is always an appealing idea to me, and this seemed perfect for that. The narrative of the song is cyclical, so it made sense for the video to do the same. Physically it seems like she is moving around a lot in the video, but in the end it turns out she was always standing in the same place, ignoring that her world is falling apart around her.”

Over the last decade, Ken Yates has solidified himself as a prolific musician, combining heartfelt lyricism, genuine authenticity and hypnotic guitar strums. After studying at the Berklee College of Music, Yates released The Backseat EP in 2011, followed by his full-length debut Twenty-Three in 2013. He won the Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award in 2014 for his song "The One That Got Away" and released his second album, Huntsville, in 2016, produced by Jim Bryson. By 2017, Yates was making waves in folk with his poignant songwriting, winning the awards for Canadian Folk Music Award for both Songwriter of the Year and New Artist of the Year. Now, with a fresh perspective and renewed sense of self, Yates brings honesty, growth and profound peace to his latest work, Cerulean. Nonetheless, Cerulean feels like a hard reset on Yates’ art and artistry. Reuniting with producer Jim Bryson, the album firmly steps into indie folk and alternative territories – he cites Big Thief, Andy Shauf, and The War On Drugs as a few of his inspirations.
