Today, Toronto indie rock collective Broken Social Scene release a surprise bootleg of a 2003 concert. Available digitally or via limited edition cassette, Live At the Phoenix Concert Theatre, 2003 was directed by Stephen Chung and is available HERE

"To commemorate the 20th Anniversary of You Forgot It In People I dug into my archives and put together this live version of ‘Jimmy and the Photocall’ one of my favorite Broken Social Scene songs that has never been released," says Chung. "We captured the entire show in standard definition on glorious Mini DV with whatever cameras and recording equipment we could beg or borrow. We are happy to share this with you 20 years later."

From December 3rd to 5th in 2003, indie rock collective Broken Social Scene performed the three sold out hometown shows at the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto. The band had just returned from a tour that took them across the US, UK, and Europe in support of their sophomore album, You Forgot It In People

The record had been released the previous year and was already on its journey to becoming one of the most celebrated indie albums of the decade. Pitchfork had called the album "endlessly replayable, perfect pop" giving it a Best New Music designation and the BBC called it "absolutely, utterly essential," setting into motion the band's swift ascent to global recognition.

On this live bootleg, you'll hear a group of friends joyously performing for their community, the people of Toronto who supported them when Broken Social Scene was just a two-person instrumental curiosity, before all the awards, the late night television performances, and invites to Glastonbury and Lollapalooza.

This collection features songs from You Forgot It In People, select tracks from their follow up self-titled record (including a 15 minute rendition of "It's All Gonna Break"), and the rarity "Jimmy and the Photocall," a long-time fan favorite that never made it on to an album!

MORE ABOUT NOODLES
Bailey and Rojas met when their kids went to the same school and their wives forced them to hang out together. It didn’t take long to establish their mutual love of music and next thing you know they were in the bigmcenroe’s home studio, trying a few riffs and having some fun.

Alvaro is a classically trained musician specializing in jazz and avant garde, while bigmcenroe has been writing and producing hip hop for his entire adult life. Over the pandemic, the pair collaborated remotely on Noodles, the new LP

“The creativity and complexity of "Surely Travel" are marvelous, pushing the boundaries of what this unstoppable band can accomplish. At the end of a record filled with questioning, remorse, and self-deprecation, Status/Non-Status' final statement is a promise to grow and explore despite their concerns or whatever rough terrain lays ahead” Exclaim!

Surely Travel is for anyone who has left or is leaving — and wants an unforgettable soundtrack to accompany them” CBC Music

Tomorrow, Status / Non-Status new LP, Surely Travel, will be available everywhere and the band will take to the highway with a run of tour dates throughout Canada. To kick off both the album release and the upcoming road trip, the band is sharing the new video for “Blown Tire”. “You see a lot of things from the road, but really you often just pass them by, onto the next mile, another highway, a shortcut or two,” says songwriter Adam Sturgeon. “Nowadays, there’s an awful lot of sprawl and lobbying for your place in the traffic line. It’s tough to believe in the world sitting there on the tarmac but still we load the van, rally our passions and pursue this dream of making rock & roll. Coast to coast, season to season, mile after mile, their car vs mine; loaded with my pals, sorting it out together.”

MORE ABOUT SURELY TRAVEL
What’s revealed when you archive the quiet moments during time spent on the road? For Adam Sturgeon, the result is a crystalline glimpse into the unseen — and gratifying — moments of personal renovation we rarely pay attention to; where a blown out tire incites calm rather than rage, and moments of frustration invite grace instead of judgement. This is the vantage of Surely Travel, the newest album by Status/Non-Status, the evolving musical project of the Anishinaabe artist and community worker, and a close-knit group of collaborators.

While Status / Non-Status’ previous album Warrior Down was long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize and was shortlisted for the 2022 SOCAN Songwriter Prize for album track “Find A Home”, recently, Sturgeon joined Zoon’s Daniel Monkman to form OMBIIGIZI whose debut album, Sewn Together, was shortlisted for the 2022 Polaris Music Prize.

Exploring their expansive, sky-sweeping folk rock from a fresh angle, Status/Non-Status drive head-on into a natural complement to the earth-shaking sonic landscapes they’re known for. A loose concept album written as a travel log of animals in flight, the record brims with open air reflections, while gazing out of a blurry window and acknowledging what it can’t see clearly. Blending the melted psychedelic gauze of distorted Americana, with thundering flashes of post rock, Sturgeon implements softness generously. At the core, remembering that lyrics that break through universally sing with clarity about experiences that “chop at the knees.”

Recorded over 10 days at Deadpan Studios in Sudbury, the goal was to chisel things down down to the bone. Where past records built atmosphere out of heavy swaths of sound, overlaid with harmonies, the band opted for a single vocal take, a Wurlitzer, and ran a $100 classical guitar through an amp. Written in the company of others, whether from the back of a van, or with a baby on the other side of the door, Sturgeon wrote sections of the record in near silence — whispered lyrics and muted bass riffs that started as lullabies, only to be blown out later. It interlaces the album’s material composition with its central inspiration: the allure of touring from coast to coast, and the reality of over-indexing on time spent in an unreliable, stuffy van; the wrenching sacrifice of time away from loved ones, in favour of only seeing a gas station and vacant roads for hours on end.

Where the acclaimed Warrior Down (2019), and its celebrated follow-up the 1,2,3,4,500 Years EP (2020) required a mighty sonic landscape to fit its lofty reckonings of nationhood, trauma and familial memory, Surely Travel tightens its scope, but not its ambition. Instead, peering inward to examine the self within its surroundings, and to underscore identity and indigeneity from the smallest spaces or ordinary experiences. Conjuring the awe of sunshowers through the rearview mirror, Surely Travel intentionally doesn’t over-promise optimism, but rather celebrates the small wins of a human-sized approach to resilience and healing.
