Prepare yourselves for the soulful celestial romp that is “Big Ol’ Bang”! Extending playfully into the present from the origins of the universe, the third single from Ruby Singh and the Future Ancestors casts musical conjurings for a “sweet escape” to mark the launch of the full length album, available everywhere this Friday.

Often our lives get tied up in what's in front of us. “Big Ol’ Bang!” invites us to lean back to take a wider perspective. ‘Now you see it unrefined | most ancient of designs | from the basis of your spine stretching out to the skyline.’ Much like our world around us we are formed by the breaking. “Big Ol’ Bang” reminds us that the broken parts of us are often where we learn and grow the most.

Khari McClelland and Holly Eccleston pepper this track generously with sultry vocals “speaking in tongues to your vertebrae.” Singh, with his soothsaying rhymes swinging, “keeps you in the shade while he brings the heat.” The rhythm section of Loewen and Schmitt, with Grdina and Finlay on guitar and turntables respectively, are formidable musicians honing a pocket that anyone can swing and move to. You're bound to join in singing this infectious hook by the end of the song.

The Flavourcel Collective have created yet another gorgeous animated video that pays homage to A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Somewhere between Milliways, Cafe Lou and the Big Bang, follow the fire water as it sets the screen ablaze.

MORE ABOUT RUBY SINGH AND THE FUTURE ANCESTORS
For the past 15 years, Ruby Singh has been travelling the west coast bringing Hip Hop performances to festivals, small communities, detention centres, schools and universities, all in a minivan. Coming from humble beginnings, Singh has felt the magic that music can offer in one’s life and that  is what has guided him to perform and lead workshops for thousands of youth.

Singh has assembled yet another formidable crew with long intertwined destinies to undertake these visions; Khari Wendell McClelland and Holly Eccleston bring deep soul and harmony with their gift of song; The JUNO Award winning talents of Gord Grdina on oud and guitar; holding down the rhythm section are the phenom Kenton Loewen on drums, typewriters, dried flowers and glass bottles with the deep grooves of Peter Schmitt on bass; Paul Finlay crossfades and scratches like a painter across a canvas; and rounding out the incredible talent on this album are the Grammy and JUNO award winning flavours of producer Chin Injeti. The album was recorded and mixed by the gift that is John Raham at AfterLife Studios on the the lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ/Selilwitulh Nations (Vancouver BC).

Tales of home and wandering, love and longing, justice and hope envelop this album. Weaving together inspiration from the Delta Blues and Qawaali to golden era Hip Hop by chopping and stitching samples into a tapestry of spirit expressed. He then gathered this stellar matrix of artist kin to embody and elevate the sound and feel.

“This album has been brewing for some time, making sure we added all the right ingredients as needed,” says Singh. “For the better part of a decade, I've been writing these songs on napkins, in voice memos and on anything that could record or I could scribble on. When I initially started the project I brought in the amazing Allison Russell to sing the hook on ‘Coming Home’ and then she of course added her own spin to it, which we put into the scratching and mixing hands of Paul Finlay to treat those recordings as samples. Early in the process I brought in the talented Holly Eccleston and Khari Wendell McClelland to jam out the ideas and there was some serious chemistry bouncing between us in my small home studio. I knew I had to take my time to get the sound right and it's a dream to have these incredible artists all contribute their talents to this album.”

Toronto punk heroes PUP—comprised of Stefan Babcock, Nestor Chumak, Zack Mykula, and Steve Sladkowski— released their incredible, ambitious and aptly titled fourth album, THE UNRAVELING OF PUPTHEBAND, earlier this year. The record earned universal acclaim and a slew of sold-out shows. With perfect timing as they kick off their run of UK shows, the band today released the PUP Unravels Live In Front Of Everyone They Know EP. The four-track offering was recorded across multiple shows in the band’s hometown of Toronto earlier this year.

In addition, the band have today released a fan footage live video for “PUPTHEBAND Inc Is Filing For Bankruptcy” (Live in Toronto / 2022). Give it a watch here “Hometown shows always kinda trip me out,” says Babcock. “On one hand, they are the most fun shows to play. Toronto has always rallied behind us and we are so lucky to feel that love. But they are also stressful because you don't want to screw up in front of everyone you know. All of our families, friends, frenemies, the guy who used to sell me weed at the Wendy's Drivethru, kids I went to elementary school with, my parents' neighbours. It's a lot. I think that sort of anxious chaotic energy is captured on these recordings. PUP live is PUP at our best and also at our worst. Raw, scrappy, and holding on for dear life.”

THE UNRAVELING OF PUPTHEBAND was recorded and mixed over the course of five weeks in the summer of 2021, in GRAMMY Award-winning producer Peter Katis’ bat-filled mansion in Connecticut. Full of typically furious, ridiculous and anthemic songs, the recording process allowed PUP to push themselves further than ever before. With more time in the studio, they were able to craft their songs sonically in a way they were unable to in the past, and allowed themselves to incorporate new instruments like piano, synths, horns, and more for the first time. Though made in madness-inducing isolation (aside from Peter and the bats, of course), PUP were remotely joined on the album by Sarah from illuminati hotties, Kathryn from NOBRO, Mel from Casper Skulls, and Erik from Remo Drive. The result is not just the next PUP record, but the *most* PUP record.

GABRIELLE SHONK RECALLS A LOVE BEFORE IT TURNED TOXIC IN NEW SINGLE

Today, Montréal-based singer-songwriter Gabrielle Shonk shares “How We Used To Be”, her first new music in five years. The song is taken from her forthcoming 2023 album which chronicles the enormity of heartache and hope that comes with endings and new beginnings.

“How We Used To Be” marks a new chapter in Shonk’s career. After parting ways with the major label behind her debut album, she used her newfound creative freedom to collaborate with longtime friends, co-writer Jessy Caron of the band Men I Trust, and producer Jesse Mac Cormack (Helena Deland). The result is a moody single with tinges of 90s R&B exploring romantic nostalgia by reminiscing about a relationship before it fell apart.

"How We Used To Be" is a love ballad about "a relationship that was hard to leave," explains the JUNO-nominated singer. Delicate piano lines and softly-strummed acoustic guitar accompany Shonk's dreamy vocals recalling a time in a relationship before it turned toxic. ‘I hate you, I love you, I miss you,’ Shonk laments before the soulful chorus reflects on better times: ‘Touch my hand, gently / Talk to me, it’s soothing / Make me see how we used to be.’
