"Part variety show, part vaudeville theatre, part improv act and part poetry slam, the Basement Revue is a cross-disciplinary carnival where anything can happen, and often does" - The Globe And Mail

For more than a decade, The Basement Revue has been a half-music, half-literary variety show with a rock-’n’-roll sensibility and a unique Canadian voice, hosted and curated by Broken Social Scene singer/songwriter Jason Collett. From its inception on a wintry night in 2007 at Toronto’s Dakota Tavern, The Basement Revue has explored what happens when artists of different disciplines share the stage together. This has made for exciting collaborations, such as Feist backing up Michael Ondaatje or Margaret Atwood stepping up to the mic in front of one of Toronto’s most celebrated bands and saying, with her characteristic deadpan wit, “hit it Sadies.” Combining a compelling mix of musicians, storytellers, and poets with the improvisational spirit of a kitchen party, The Basement Revue has blossomed into one of Canada’s most dynamic live event series.

This year, co-curated by writer and Basement Revue alum Emma Healey, it returns once again to The Paradise on Bloor, every Thursday in December beginning on the 1st and running until the 29th.

TICKETS ON SALE NOW

Just before the Basement Revue kicks off, Collett will also be releasing his new album, Head Full Of Wonder, which finds him stepping out of his usual creative orbit, recording in Toronto at All Day Coconut with Montreal producer Marcus Paquin, joined by drummer Liam O'Neill (SUUNS), guitarist Joe Grass, and bassist Mike O'Brien (Zeus). A distillation of the five years since 2016’s Song And Dance Man, these eleven new songs hone in on the fine craft of songwriting, offering a direct and simple collection of elegant indie folk, some of the most poignant creations of Collett's storied catalogue.

"In absorbing the tumult of the times, there's a lot of shit to write through, (that Bruce Cockburn line comes to mind, ‘you've got to kick at the darkness until it bleeds daylight’) and the challenge is to get to the other side with something positive to contribute," Collett says. "I let go of some swagger and embraced intimacy and joy and wonder. I hear this in the record and it makes me very happy to have made it.”

As a lyricist, singer-songwriter Cassidy Mann often reshapes a small moment into a powerful and poetic song that feels both personal and relatable. “My favourite thing is to write about tiny things that make the bigger picture more important somehow,” she says. “It’s interesting to me how memories are interpretable.”

Her latest offering is the new single “Along for the Ride” – a song she wrote alone in her bedroom and then co-produced with Kris Ulrich and long time collaborator Roman Clarke. The track features back up vocals and harmonies by Georgia Harmer, a choice Mann says is “a musical symbol of the people in your life who support you.”

“Along for the Ride” means “so much to me,” she continues. “It’s about getting caught up in someone else’s life and losing your agency for a while. I’ve experienced that in all sorts of relationships, romantic and platonic and it’s always destabilising. Usually by the time you realise you’ve lost yourself in someone, you’re so deep into it that the idea of getting out feels impossible.

“This song is me recalling times when I caught glimpses of my unhappiness, before I felt capable of doing anything about it. Accepting patterns within my relationships and acknowledging I have the power to change them. It’s so easy to fall for another person’s dreams and trick yourself into believing they’re yours, especially if part of you is sort of afraid of your own success or trying to escape the past. I hope this song can be a reminder that our own goals are worthy of pursuing and the right people will encourage them, not try to bury them.

My friend Georgia Harmer is singing harmonies throughout this song and to me, the stacked vocals are a symbol of the people in your life who support you, even when you feel completely lost. I feel so lucky to have an amazing support system and to have made this song with so many friends. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.”

MORE ABOUT CASSIDY MANN
Mann’s latest EP, If It’s Not Forever, served as a catalogue of how her early relationships ended and why – and she hopes that other people feel seen and comforted by her stories. Certain moments in a relationship are almost always at the core of her songs, whether it’s the potential start of something special (“Since I Met You”) or the inevitable end (“Stop a Heart”).

With family hailing from the community of Sagkeeng First Nation, her Indigenous heritage continually influences her music. “Indigenous tradition is based around oral storytelling – songs and spoken stories,” Mann observes. “It ties into my songwriting because that’s how memories and experiences have been captured in my culture forever. Storytelling is something I feel compelled to do. I think it probably has a lot to do with the fact that that’s what my ancestors did.”

Hayden, the long-heralded king of downcast Canadian indie-folk, is today sharing his new single "East Coast" – out via Arts & Crafts. The legendary singer-songwriter's first new music since 2015's Hey Love, "East Coast" is a forlorn ballad of spare, cyclical piano mixed with Hayden’s strained tenor reaching for the Atlantic horizon, grasping for something that was once there. Written, produced, and mixed by Hayden, the emotion of the song immediately rises to the surface, as he sings in his familiar gravely register: ‘Oh I need you now/ Like I needed you then/ Like I’ll need you till the end/ But I can’t recall/ This feeling at all’.

Speaking about the track, Hayden says: "I was inspired to write this song after covering a Leonard Cohen song called ‘Avalanche’ for the promotion of the film Death Of A Ladies Man. I switched the finger-picking guitar to a rolling piano part and liked the feel so much, I just kept playing until this chord progression appeared. The words came later after an autumn visit to Newfoundland. To me, the East Coast imagery matched the circular playing perfectly. I remember feeling like I hit on something when I dialed in a synth that sounded like a ship’s fog horn. The final touch was getting Toronto legend Kurt Swinghammer to do his guitar magic over the end section. He did something in a similar vein on a song of mine called ‘Street Car’ over twenty years ago, and it was one of my favorite moments on Skyscraper National Park."

Hayden, a Toronto mainstay, has been making gorgeous and affective indie folk since his timeless debut, 1996’s Everything I Long For. His honest and heartrending songwriting has been likened to Neil Young and Leonard Cohen, while his sonic acuity is mentioned in the same breath as seminal indie bands like Pavement and Sebadoh. Over the course of three decades, Hayden has built a cult following on earnest and soulful indie rock – “East Coast” points to the best being ahead of him yet.

Hayden's annual Dream Serenade benefit concert takes place on November 12 at Massey Hall. A nearly sold-out Ontario tour runs November 17 to December 3. A new album is anticipated for early 2023, with more news soon to follow.
