More than a decade in the making, Gord Downie, the iconic late frontman of The Tragically Hip, and Bob Rock, the legendary producer perhaps best known for Metallica’s Black Album, today share “Lustre Parfait” – the first song of their long mythologized collaboration. Inspired by their brotherhood in rock n’ roll, “Lustre Parfait” is electrified and resplendent, created in reverence to the magnitude of music itself. Blending poetry and power in lavish measure, the song bursts out of the gate with breakneck pace, organ flourishes, and horn blasts, inspiring Gord’s thoughtful verse and explosive chorus – a booming invitation to "gather in the dark" for that silent, deafening moment when the lights go down and the stars start to star.

Wearing the musical influences of giants on their ample sleeves, sparks fly from the first salvo of "Lustre Parfait," the groove racing like a la ‘Exile on E Street.’ Downie sings above his high water mark most have come to know, inspired by Rock's mastery of brash post-punk and brassy stadium anthemics. Defiant, with a crystal clear fury in his voice not heard since The Tragically Hip’s Man Machine Poem farewell tour, Gord unfurls pristine lyrical strands from Rock’s cathedral of sound, divining imagery both raucous and gothic – ‘we float above the wreck … like A Scene From the Deluge.’ Compared to the raw intimacy of Downie’s posthumous solo releases – 2017’s letter to loved ones Introduce Yerelf, and 2020’s ghostly goodbye Away Is Mine – “Lustre Parfait” is a rallying cry from a voice that echoes loud and clear: Gord Downie, in the pocket of a gleaming rock band, relentless, lit up by the risk of collaboration, blazing on the edge of experimentation.

Downie and Rock’s collaboration began when they first worked together on The Tragically Hip's World Container (2006) and We Are The Same (2009). It was after the production of the second outing that Downie asked if Rock had music he could write lyrics for. The sonic spaces that Rock would provide incited Downie to delve into the depths of his notebooks, armed with the musical clues to find the brilliance mapped therein. On “Lustre Parfait,” charged the full strength of his spirit and the magic of collaboration, Gord tugs on the heartstrings of the mind, with such perfection: ‘All I want/ All I wish/ Is for a heart I can give/ First word/ To final wish/ A heart I can give.’

Bob Rock says: “First and foremost Gord was my friend, and having the opportunity to work with him on these songs was one of the biggest highlights of my professional life. I am grateful that I got to witness his genius in such close proximity.”

Words by Gord Downie and music by Bob Rock – the fireworks in that statement alone reverberate vastly. Contributing guitars, keyboards, and percussion, the multi-platinum-selling, Grammy Award and JUNO Award-winning, Canadian Hall of Fame-inducted Rock shines on “Lustre Parfait.” Renowned for a stunning and diverse discography that ranges from Motley Crüe and The Cult to Cher and Michael Bublé, Rock inspires Downie’s performance with searing electric melodies and rock n’ roll grandeur. Flanked by co-producers Jamey Koch on bass and Adam Greenholtz on keyboards and percussion, Rock leads a cast of contributing musicians that intuit the depth of his ideas on “Lustre Parfait.” The horn duo of Tom Keenlyside on saxophone and Steve Madaio on trumpet fill the sound to its rafters, recalling the pomp and bombast of The Rolling Stones or the earth-shocking cacophony of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Chris Gestrin on keys, Sean Nelson on drums, and sisters Camille Henderson and Saffron Henderson on backing vocals complete the patina on which Gord’s lyrics dance.

“Lustre Parfait” is available now as a digital single via Arts & Crafts. An album is forthcoming in 2023 with more details to be announced soon.

MORE ABOUT GORD DOWNIE
Gord Downie is the late lead singer and songwriter of rock giants The Tragically Hip. Over more than thirty years and across fourteen studio albums, Downie and his band of brothers built a legacy as the essential Canadian rock band. With seven solo albums to his name, Downie’s own music refutes definition, renowned for its adventurous poetry, collaboration, elastic composition, and Gord’s singular wail. Downie presented Secret Path in 2016, a multimedia project helping to bring crucial awareness to Indigenous reconciliation in Canada. The Tragically Hip performed their final national tour earlier that summer, leaving an indelible mark on the more than twelve million fans that watched the historic farewell concert, televised from the band’s hometown of Kingston, Ontario. Downie passed away on October 17, 2017. In memoriam, The New York Times stated that Downie has “no parallel in the United States. Imagine Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Michael Stipe combined into one sensitive, oblique, poet-philosopher, and you’re getting close.”

You may recognize Marcus Paquin’s name from the liner-notes of many well-loved records over the past twenty years. From his work on albums by The National, Local Natives, The Weather Station, Julia Jacklin, Begonia, Sarah Harmer, and countless others, Marcus’s accolades as collaborator and co-creator are wide ranging and illustrious. Marcus’ first solo effort Our Love sees him moving out of the liner notes and onto the cover.

Today, he’s sharing another new track from the album, “Something Beautiful”, a song about “friendship and unconditional love,” says Paquin. “It celebrates an awareness that a myriad of beautiful experiences exist in every moment and that it’s up to each of us to be present in those moments so we can absorb and reflect that energy back onto others.”

The track arrives with a video from Paquin that he made with his daughter. “Making the video with my daughter was one of the most joyful experiences of my life,” he says. “The original idea for the video was that it would be an animation. It would involve a number of characters that are typically natural enemies in the wild in conflict and then eventually, they would forge deep and unexpected friendships. But that concept fell through so I started considering alternate plans.”

“My daughter and I were listening to the song together and she spontaneously came up with a choreography that I loved. That choreography sparked the basis for the video concept:

an unlikely friendship forming between a rabbit and a wolf. It would be shot in a variety of locations. Each setting might be overlooked or recognized for their simple or grandiose beauty, representing individual awareness and presence.”

“The dance represents both an openness and a struggle that ultimately leads to growth. My daughter and I spent two glorious days dancing and jamming in various spots on the beautiful island of Montreal. Beyond the message behind the video, we hope it makes people smile and join in the dance.”

MORE ABOUT OUR LOVE
“The catharsis that came of writing the songs on this album helped me process the pain of my separation from my partner of 18 years and recognize the beauty and the healing power of my own self-love,” says Paquin. ”En route to accepting my new path, I saw clearly that love is everywhere and that we need only extend an open hand to receive it and an open heart to give it. Our Love is an exploration of my relationship with love and an ode to love in its many forms.”

Our Love was written, arranged, played, produced and mixed by Marcus with drumming from friend and former bandmate Liam O’Neill (Suuns). It combines Marcus’ raw and intimate song writing with his veteran production chops, blending traditional indie rock sounds with lush layers of electronics and synths.

MORE ABOUT MARCUS PAQUIN
Since the first time Marcus heard the iconic Beatles record Abbey Road, his trajectory was defined – music was to be his lifelong obsession. From an early age, he spent countless hours lying next to his Fisher Price turntable, wearing out the grooves of his favorite records in his mother’s collection. Music connected with Marcus in a way that was visceral, raw and emotional. Through his adolescence rock posters, tour shirts, guitar straps and LP jackets were a staple in his bedroom. He fawned over Morrissey lyrics, Eddie solos, Bonham grooves and Michael’s moves and spent countless hours practicing guitar – learning songs, writing songs and playing in bands. It became his mission to decode the puzzle pieces that evoked such emotion.

Marcus dissected recorded music and poured over its component parts, trying to decipher how they had been played and recorded. At fifteen, he became adept at making professional sounding recordings with his Tascam 464 recorder. He enjoyed the creative aspects of multitrack recording and the way different microphones, tape types and speeds affected the sonic quality of his recorded compositions. Recording opened new avenues for his craft and creativity, so in his early twenties he enrolled in the Music Performance degree at McGill University in Montreal where he studied jazz guitar and then completed a Masters degree in sound recording. From 2009-2011 he signed to Last Gang records with his band Silver Starling as primary composer and lead singer.

ELLEN FROESE NEW ALBUM, FOR EACH FLOWER GROWING, OUT NOVEMBER 10, 2022 VIA VICTORY POOL RECORDS

Recently, Ellen Froese announced her upcoming LP, For Each Flower Growing, and shared the title track from the album. Out November 10 via Victory Pool Records, the album is “based around ideas of 1970s science exploration via Carl Sagan’s series Cosmos, Arthur Russell’s drum machine folk music, finding humour in sadness, and analyzing past relationship choices,” says Froese. “I am moving past old ideas and into a realm of music that incorporates some newer techniques that I have been opposed to in the past (doubling vocals, drum machines, synths), and recognizing that folk music can be anything I want it to be – I don’t have to be stuck in an antiquated mindset to hold strong musical ties to the past. A lot has changed since I started writing this album – I’ve grown up a lot, grappling with the fact that my original recording engineer and great friend, Jill Mack, passed away during the process. Jill’s death turned the album into something different - it is now an homage to her and will always hold memories of my time in the studio with her.

Produced by Sam Corbett (The Sheepdogs), Froese says he “calmly and consistently pushed me towards more radio-friendly songs while still respecting my artistic tendencies and wishes. I am truly very excited about where the songs ended up and I think they are significantly more ‘adult’ than my old music. There are a variety of songs on the album – from Fairport Convention-inspired 70s psychedelic folk jams to quiet contemplative sad finger-style guitar songs to Poppy Family-inspired 60s pop to a country waltz. It finds me working through notions of how my homeschooled/Mennonite/farm/only-child/kid bluegrass band upbringing has affected me and how my values and ideas of what family is have changed throughout the years, and how that lead me to where I am now, at 26.”

Clever and slightly self-deprecating, Ellen Froese’ songs get into the places of your heart that hold both those quieter melancholic feelings and those moments of warm contentment that make you want to dance shoulder to shoulder with whoever is around. Today, she’s sharing two new live videos for “For Each Flower Growing” and previous single “Like I’m Looking At You”. Recorded live at Rec Hall Studios, the performance sees Sam Corbett on Drums, Clayton Linthicum on Guitar, and Chris Mason on Bass.

Ellen is also revealing the artwork for the new album from Saskatchewan artist Yonina Rollack. “For continuity between this album cover and Ellen's single, I used the same technique of cutting shapes from painted paper. Ellen was drawn to the colour yellow, so the sunflowers are also a repeating motif. In this landscape, the sky is prominent - a reminder of both the vastness of the universe and the sanctity of a single moment. The pink colour suggests the sun is about to set, and stars will soon appear in the sky. The flowers are stemless and appear to be floating up towards the sky to become a part of the cosmos.”

MORE ABOUT ELLEN FROESE
Growing up on a dairy farm in the heart of Saskatchewan, Ellen’s passion for music started at an early age, beginning with a love of listening to the classics in her dad’s truck. But it was discovering Neil Young that drove her to a love of songwriting. Hearing his music made her quit piano lessons to instead teach herself guitar. The beginning of her career was heavily influenced by classic folk and bluegrass.

Since her days with In With The Old, a band which Ellen lovingly calls her “teenage bluegrass band,” which produced two albums and toured extensively, Ellen has performed in various forms, from solo singer-songwriter, to member of a duo, to being in a full band. Her influences have expanded from traditional bluegrass music to include musicians such as Tia Blake, Gordon Lightfoot, and Buffy Sainte-Marie. Now with three solo albums and one forthcoming, Ellen’s sound has evolved (though she’s never stopped being obsessed with folk music). Her music now adds elements of rock n’ roll, classic country ballads, honky-tonk, and 1970s psychedelic pop grooves while still being grounded in the bluegrass tradition of a working-class relatability.

Despite a love of touring and van life, Saskatchewan is still home to Ellen. She can often be found at one of her favourite venues in Saskatoon, the Broadway Theatre, slinging beers for other artists’ shows. Or sometimes, she moves a little further down the street to play a honky-tonk night, featuring everyone’s favourite country covers, at Amigos Cantina. With a charismatic and charming stage presence, she is quick to bring up others onstage.

In winter 2021, Ellen released “In The Sun”, the first of two singles featuring collaborations with Chris Mason (The Deep Dark Woods) and Clayton Linthicum (Kacy and Clayton). “‘In The Sun’ is about conflict and feeling helpless, unable to get your point across. It's about the feeling of not being heard, and just wanting to escape the cycle of thought - planning your next move, and thinking and thinking about what you could say to make them hear and understand you.” says Froese. The second single, also featuring Chris and Clayton, “Did You Have a Love Before”, is only getting fans more and more excited for what’s coming next.
