“Begonia has one of Canada’s most extraordinary voices, and thankfully she uses it to obliterate misery from this world one live performance at a time.” - NOISEY

“You’ve been let in on pop’s best kept secret.” - CBC Music

“…a complex, powerhouse synth-soul album that hangs on one of Canada’s most extraordinary voices.” - Line of Best Fit

“An audacious adventure in modern soul” - Globe & Mail

“The woman has, you would say, presence to spare. When she opens her mouth to sing it’s like, “What just happened?” - Exclaim!

“[Begonia] conjures charming vintage soul and lays on the richly layered choruses. But she’s also enormously distinct in her crystalline delivery, which pairs perfectly with songs about starting down doubt and anxiety.” - NPR Music

Today, Begonia (Alexa Dirks) returns to announce Powder Blue, the follow up to 2019’s Fear, which was nominated for both the Polaris Music Prize and a JUNO Award. On the album’s name, Dirks says, “Powder Blue is more of an emotion. It makes me think of my baby blanket, the colour of the virgin mary’s shawl at the church Christmas play, the airiness of clouds on a summer day, chlorine filled water in a hotel pool, Elvis in the 70s wearing an ill-fitting jumpsuit, the wallpaper in my room growing up, the collection of faded denim jackets in my basement.”

“The name of this album needed to be something that encompasses all of the feelings that these songs give me when they are put together,” Dirks continues. “When I listen to them as a unit, they send me back to the words, the colour. To me, this album holds a muted nostalgia, musings on childhood, the complexities of new love, self love, religion, virginity, and sexuality. There’s an indulgence in emotional depth and pain yet also an indulgence in love and a poppy lightness—two sides I’ve always tried to balance. I feel like I let my guard down even more with this record and decided to not hold back on either end.”

The first single from the new LP “Right Here”, arrives complete with a video from director Eric Peterson. The track is “a love song for all my friends,” says Dirks. “The Matts (Schellenberg and Peters), Marcus Paquin, and I started writing it in December 2019 about how I was on tour all the time–always feeling like I was missing my friends’ milestones, parties, birthdays etc. I love what I do, but the sacrifice is that you're not really someone who can like...BE THERE physically for a lot of important (and unimportant) things back home. We never fully finished the song that December, but then we picked it up again during pandemic lockdowns and it started to take on a whole new meaning. At that time, it felt like everyone was missing everything / everyone because we had to stay apart. Another way this song could be interpreted (that I didn't originally intend) is that I’m haunting all my best friends when they go out without me. Maybe that's creepy but also...tender? It's meant to be tender, haha.”

MORE ABOUT BEGONIA
As Begonia, Alexa Dirks is bold, brazen with her florid, surprising pop that is tempered with sensitivity and wisdom. In her music, Begonia leans hard into a sense of arrival. Whether it’s learning to come into her own or processing a brutal heartbreak, Dirks’ intimate lyrics and audacious sound allows for her audience to relate to the messiness of life with an honesty that is refreshing.

Her debut LP, Fear, was nominated for a JUNO Award for Adult Alternative Album Of The Year and was longlisted for The Polaris Music Prize. It was one of Exclaim!’s Most Underrated Albums of the Year, made end of the year lists from CBC Music and Dominionated, and saw both “Beats” and “Hanging On A Line” named as CBC Music Top 20 Fan Favourites of the year. Fear also spent 10 straight weeks as the #1 album in Canada on Earshot’s Top 50 chart

Fear was written and co-produced with a familiar team of Matt Schellenberg (Royal Canoe) and Matt Peters (Royal Canoe) along with Marcus Paquin (The National, The Weather Station, Julia Jacklin).

Dirks' first solo EP, Lady in Mind, was well-received, being listed on NPR’s 10 Artists You Need To Know in 2017 and single “Juniper” reached #1 on the CBC Radio 2 Top 20. Noisey wrote that, “Begonia has one of Canada’s most extraordinary voices, and thankfully she uses it to obliterate the misery from this world one live performance at a time.” NPR wrote that Begonia is “the place where synth-pop meets old soul and scrappy meets sexy."

Joshua Qaumariaq stands out in every possible way with his bellowing vocals, vulnerable lyrics, impassioned shredding and striking fashion sense, which all help inform the Trade-Offs' exciting take on blues rock. The singles from sophomore album let go, give in, fall down find the band showing off some soul and country chops while Qaumariaq's lyrics share stories about the ups and downs of life north of the 60th parallel.” - Exclaim!

This Friday, The Trade-Offs will release their new LP, let go, give in, fall down, via Aakuluk Music. Of the new record, lead singer and guitarist Josh Qaumariaq. “I want the listener to make their own version of what the song is and hope they feel all the feelings I felt as I wrote some of these songs. Some songs are more blunt and clear. Songs about death, songs about after death and what feels like a never ending death of friends, family and our culture."

For one last taste of the album before it’s available everywhere, the band are sharing the title track from the new record, “Let Go, Give In, Fall Down”. "It is a song I wrote mixed between losing people in life and learning from life in general," says Qaumariaq. "Let go of regrets and give in to that one thing you have been holding off on, falling down and learning to get back up."

MORE ABOUT let go, give in, fall down
On their new record, let go, give in, fall down, The Trade-Offs have refined their unique sound with a blend of deeply personal Inuktitut and English lyrics singing the Arctic blues about universal themes of darkness and light and closeness and isolation. Arctic Soul, the band’s iconic brand, is distinguished by the deep brooding voice of Josh Qaumariaq and soulful backing of Jeff Maurice, Galen Pelley, and Michael Eckert set against blues and rock and roll sounds echoing from the depth of the Northern tundra.

let go, give in, fall down – in both its title and in the content of its nine tracks — is about how to bend, but not break; it’s about how to survive and find hope in the North amid loneliness, isolation, and deaths of close relations.

“It’s just the feeling of the album,” says lead singer and guitarist Josh Qaumariaq. “From losing people to being alone, you just gotta let go, give in, and fall down.”

There’s solace and joy to be found here, too. Lead single “Qanuirunniilaarmijuk” is a patient, smoky alt-country sway that switches between English and Inuktitut lyrics, while Michael Eckert’s slide guitar whines and croons in the background. “The title means, ‘things will be okay again,’” says Qaumariaq. “Things get tough, and you have to remember to say, ‘Okay, this is crazy right now, but it’ll calm down.’ I thought it was important to put it out right away, especially for Inuit.”

The blues rock stomp of second single “Crowberry Hill” is a love letter to Qaumariaq’s home, and the rituals, both simple and critical, that he and his kin have built there. ‘Hunting down young ring seals/Glassy lakes and long big fields/Now you know, baby, where I come from!’ he calls on the chorus. Across the record, Qaumariaq howls and roars like the Arctic wind, then broods and glows like late-night embers in the hearth, while the band swaggers between rootsy, earnest alt-country, -rock, -blues, and -soul.

The Trade-Offs—Iqaluit-based members Qaumariaq and Jeffrey Maurice (bass, backing vocals), along with Toronto collaborators Eckert (pedal steel) and Galen Pelley (drums)—recorded let go, give in, fall down over six days at Toronto’s Orange Lounge Studio with producer JP Maurice (Jeffrey’s cousin). Jace Lasek mixed the record and Philip Gosselin mastered it.

Qaumariaq says it’s the record he and Maurice have always wanted to create, finally pinning down the sound they’d been chasing for 10+ years as a band. “We finally feel so good because we sound like ourselves,” says Qaumariaq. “This album means a lot to me, and I finally feel like I have something that feels like me.”

NORTH AMERICAN PERFORMANCE DATES BEGIN JANUARY 2023

“This sixth album moves the needle on again, while never losing sight of his brilliance as a songwriter... Being Somewhere carries a gentle wisdom, filled with kindness... It’s like being given a cozy sonic hug while the world’s storms rage outside.” - MOJO

Full of kindness and empathy, the Vancouver songwriter's latest serves as a gentle reminder to appreciate what you have before it's gone.” - RANGE Magazine

“Being Somewhere showcases some of Mangan’s finest writing couched in some of the most atmospheric arrangements to appear in his catalogue. From the Spartan, piano-driven Just Know It with its subtle harmonies to All Roads driving atmospherics, the production is meticulous.” - Vancouver Sun

“Dan Mangan’s sixth album strikes a fine balance between the quiet intimacy of his best work and Bon Iver’s most fractalized folktronica... The likes of ‘Fire Escape’ and ‘All Roads’ provide warmth and immediacy without disrupting the delicate mood.” - Uncut

Being Somewhere, Dan Mangan’s sixth studio album, cuts incisively but never forgets its underlying thesis: It’s cool to care. Mangan arms the rebels in the crusade for tenderness. Out today via Arts & Crafts, the album is a combative plea for mercy from a manic world and its effects on the psyche. Whittling his sharpest pen to date, Being Somewhere is marked by Mangan’s singular wit and a respectful deference to the quagmire of existence.

“I wanted this album to feel like the inside crook of a familiar elbow on the nape of your neck, a comforting embrace” says Mangan, “These songs are tenderhearted and unfurl like an overdue conversation with a dear friend. They essentially lay out where we’re at, how I’m doing, and how I think I can help."

MORE ABOUT BEING SOMEWHERE
571 emails. 100+ hours on the phone and thousands of text messages. A mere 3 days spent in-person together over two and a half years of long-distance work. Such a displaced recording process might make anyone question the concept of being anywhere at all, let alone being somewhere else.

This is how Dan Mangan and collaborator/producer Drew Brown (Radiohead, Beck) manifested Being Somewhere. All components were recorded in isolation and beamed up to the mothership. No piece of the puzzle ended up as expected, and each moment is the fruition of separate, yet conjoined, rabbit holes.

“The hard part was waiting,” Mangan says of the long-distance process, “sometimes it took six weeks to resolve an issue that could have taken twenty minutes had we been together in a room. But Drew’s dedication and talent cannot be understated, and this music doesn’t sound like anything else I’m hearing these days."

Under the care of Drew Brown’s distinct touch, Being Somewhere forges sonics well beyond the tropes of modern folk music. Helming the project from Chicago, Brown sourced musical contributions from all over North America, the UK and Japan, including work from Joey Waronker (Beck, Atoms for Peace), Jason Falkner (Beck, St. Vincent), Thomas Bartlett (The National, Taylor Swift), Dave Okumu (Arlo Parks, Adele), Mary Lattimore (Kurt Vile, Sharon Van Etten), and Broken Social Scene frontman Kevin Drew.
