Chances are you have a list kicking around your place right now. Maybe a shopping list – or a ‘to do’ list? Do you make a list of pros and cons when faced with a big decision? We humans love our lists because they offer a placebo effect to the complex chaos of our world.

In Laurie Brown’s latest episode of Pondercast, we start with an abandoned shopping list found in a cart in the grocery store…then dip into the secret lists you keep in your head…and end up in the British Library imagining a life without any lists at all. From listful to listless….

On the eve of the release of Head Full Of Wonder, the charming seventh album from Jason Collett that will be released on Arts & Crafts tomorrow, Collett is sharing animated video for the album track "Everyday Sunflower" created by the visual artist Anne Douris. A tale of comeuppance that follows the plight of a modern day sunflower in a classic hand-painted animation, "Everyday Sunflower" reflects both the simplicity and the depth of storytelling that Collett set out to explore on Head Full Of Wonder.

Inspired in part by Allen Ginsberg's poem Sunflower Sutra, the song is a simple reflection on everyday beauty and the best example of trying to say more with less on the record. Jason's elegant lyrics inspire the album's bright hue – produced by Marcus Paquin, featuring Liam O'Neill of SUUNS (drums), Mike O'Brien of Zeus (bass), Joe Grass (pedal steel, nylon guitar), Gavin Gardner (triangle), and Neil Quin, Carleigh Aikins, Meg Contini (background vocals) – to which Douris pays tribute with a sunswept and sardonic bow to resilience and the late-hanging summer. "Anne's work is a marvel. I love the twisted sense of humour she brings to it," Collett says. "She's taken a little song and turned it into a biblical tale."

A distillation of the five years since his Song And Dance Man, these eleven new songs hone in on the fine craft of songwriting, offering a direct and simple collection of elegant indie folk, some of the finest creations and poignant of Collett's storied career.

"In absorbing the tumult of the times, there's a lot of shit to write through, (that Bruce Cockburn line comes to mind, "you've got to kick at the darkness until it bleeds daylight") and the challenge is to get to the other side with something positive to contribute," he says. "I let go of some swagger and embraced intimacy and joy and wonder. I hear this in the record and it makes me very happy to have made it.

Wayfinding’s debut performance took place at this summer’s Calgary Folk Music Festival and they are quickly building a receptive audience for an anticipated release. The band, which includes musician/artist Cassia Hardy (guitar), Marek Tyler (drums), Ryan Beattie (vocals/guitar) and Matthew Cardinal (bass/keys), is somewhat enigmatic and induced by the current moment and nature of the world around us. We are here for it, supporting each through each chord change and chorus and playing songs together.

Today, they share their debut single, “Bad Blood” via Victory Pool Records. “I first read the lyrics and saw a person frustrated, mad, and coming to terms with a narrative that he had been sold and was now in the position of either turning a blind eye or doing something about it,” says Tyler. “For me, it reminded me of how much I love playing with Ryan.”

MORE ABOUT WAYFINDING
Cardinal and Tyler’s other project, nêhiyawak, received both Polaris Music Prize and JUNO Award nominations, and they bring a wealth of creative history to this new endeavour. Tyler’s subtle percussion and Cardinal’s synth soundscapes and melodic bass playing are an ideal complement to Beattie’s winding chord progressions, keeping the listener on track through each unexpected curve.

With his mix of matter-of-fact narratives and off-kilter vocals, which generally float above a rubbery mix of synthesized tones, electronic blips, and dreamy guitars, songwriter multi-instrumentalist Ryan Beattie is genuinely hypnotic and alluring, as Wayfinding. As the creative driver behind Chet and Himalayan Bear (also works with Frog Eyes, Kathryn Calder, Ashley Shadow, and Pink Mountain Tops) Wayfinding have made fans of Destroyer's Dan Bejar and Islands' Nick Thorburn, among others, and one can hear why. The playfully clever and intellectually amusing, postmodern pop craft on display here seems right up their respective alleys. It's heartfelt and fascinating music well-thought-out by Beattie.

One of Wayfinding's cool tricks is this expression isn't marred in preciousness. Brushed with reverb, Beattie sings emotively with witty intention but articulate and direct; his lyrics are unsettling and mysterious, occasionally replete with wry jokes that elicit nervous laughter and bewildered surprise. And yet, Wayfinding is uniquely haunting in its honesty, demanding listeners revisit these strange and lovely songs again and again.

Watch for more new music from Wayfinding in the near future.
