Andy Shauf is driving us out to a wild and dangerous place. Norm, his new album out February 10 on Arts & Crafts, is a recognizable Shauf production, but with a flowing landscape of suppressed grooves propelling the songs toward uncertain destinations. The story takes shape through little epiphanies, accumulating like debris from a series of implosions, beginning with last month’s “jaunty [and] existential” (Stereogum) lead single/album opener, “Wasted On You”. Today, Shauf returns with the new single, “Catch Your Eye”. Accompanied by a charming animated video written by Shauf and featuring artwork by Mary Vertulfo, “Catch Your Eye” continues along Norm’s tracklist, and depicts a missed connection in a grocery store. ‘I need to meet you / I need to catch your eye,’ Shauf confesses through layers of vocals and muted guitar, before bright synth tones usher the tune along.

Beginning next month, Shauf will bring his acclaimed live performance to a slew of cities across North America, Europe and the UK in support of Norm, with Katy Kirby and Marina Allen supporting select dates. A full tour schedule is listed below, and tickets are on sale now.

MORE ABOUT NORM
What would eventually become Norm started out in a very different place. Shauf really wanted to steer clear of a concept album, instead aiming to make a normal record. It would be a set of unrelated songs, like albums recorded by other artists, and he would call it Norm. Watching a David Lynch film one night, Shauf found inspiration for how to frame his concept. What appeared to be a nearly static camera shot of a key on a table continued uninterrupted for two minutes, then five minutes, then seven. It seemed impossible in its relentlessness, bordering on genius. Eventually, Shauf realized his browser had crashed and the movie had frozen. Enchanted by the sense of possibility and wonder that had made the film so vivid to him during that period of incomprehension, he wanted to create something similar. He deliberately left open spaces through which readers could enter to find the story and create meaning for themselves.

Once initial sketches emerged and Shauf realized he did, in fact, have the makings of another concept album, he began revising freestanding songs he’d written for the original idea of Norm, altering the lyrics until they had all been reengineered to belong in Norm’s universe. He wanted to connect them without force-marching listeners through an obvious story. Refining the lyrics, he sent them to his friend Nicholas Olson, who interpreted the overall narrative as he understood it. They repeated this process a few times, until Shauf felt the bones of the story as he imagined it lay close enough to the surface to be dug up by anyone who wanted to go looking.

Shauf wrote, performed and recorded the entire album, and recruited Neal Pogue (Tyler the Creator, Janelle Monae, Outkast) to mix. With Shauf singing everything, it’s not always obvious at first whose point of view is represented in each song. But the lyric sheet provides discreet clues to know whose voice we’re hearing at any given moment (Norm’s cast of characters includes four voices in all).

With Norm, Shauf has upended his songwriting methods, creating a deeply haunting and unpredictable universe. He’s tackling love and loss on a more panoramic, extreme scale, but Shauf feels the album is consistent with his earlier focus on small, intense encounters. He uses these close-ups to devastating effect, keeping us focused on the tiny connections between lonely creatures, while raising the stakes on the action to existential levels. There’s a story unfolding that leaps song to song, illuminating the comedy and cruelty of humanity, but, if you listen closely, most of the action takes place in the gaps between tracks.

RIVER TIBER RELEASES NEW LP TODAY, SHARES VIDEO FOR “HYPNOTIZED”

RIVER TIBER’S NEW LP, DREAMING EYES, OUT TODAY

Out today, Dreaming Eyes is River Tiber’s (Tommy Paxton-Beesley) first full-length release since his 2016 debut Indigo. The Toronto-based producer crafted nearly every element of the album by himself - writing, recording, singing, and playing multiple instruments. River’s music is a singular mix of psychedelic rock, cosmic jazz, and bittersweet soul that has been tapped by artists such as Drake, SZA, and Travis Scott. Lead single “Hypnotized” was sampled by Kendrick Lamar on his Grammy Award-nominated album Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers.

In celebration of today’s LP release, River Tiber is sharing the new video for “Hypnotized” by director Leo Aguirre. “During the lockdown Tommy and I started discussing themes and got to talking about the lack of empathy that seemed to be at the surface of everything that was happening politically and socially,” says Aguirre. “At the same time, Tommy’s music is inhabited by these mystical and romantic undertones so I really wanted to introduce a character that would in a way embody this hope; this elusive idea of love and hope that he is chasing.”

“Sonically, the song is bathed in this deep mysticism and is explosively psychedelic so I wanted to create something visually striking that would match the song’s energy,” Aguirre continues. “When we were conceptualizing the video, we thought about everything from the pandemic to increasingly drastic climate disasters, data breaches and the extirpation of democracies around the world, so we thought we would be remiss not to create a hyperbolized, but potentially not so distant, reality; one in which hyper-surveillance is inescapable and where it has become easier to live in a state of sedation - something akin to ‘Soma’ in Huxley’s in Brave New World. That is why we wanted to introduce this metaphor of a modern opium den in which people are collectively sedated.”

MORE ABOUT DREAMING EYES
Dreaming Eyes marks River’s first album in 6 years. He has been a prolific producer and collaborator, embedded in a circle of Canadian musicians including Daniel Caesar, Kaytranada, BADBADNOTGOOD, Charlotte Day Wilson, Frank Dukes, and Sean Leon. But this collection of songs was the result of the solitude and isolation of the pandemic. The album was written and produced almost entirely solo. Every instrument was recorded by River himself (except for a couple of searing guitar parts from long-time collaborator John Mavro). The lyrics are prismatic, examining and shedding light on contemporary life from many angles. Psychedelic rock, cosmic jazz orchestration, and bittersweet soul weave a journey that bends and constantly surprises.

Today, siblings Mariel Buckley and T. Buckley (Tim Buckley) are sharing their version of The Tragically Hip’s infamous “Bobcaygeon”, a collaboration that came about shortly after Gord Downie passed away. “There was a CKUA fundraiser concert happening down at Ironwood in Calgary that Mariel and I were both playing some tunes at and we wanted to do something by the Hip to honour what they meant to us musically,” says Tim. “I started playing around with trying to fingerpick ‘Bobcaygeon’ and it just seemed to all fall into place.

“One of the great things about singing with your sibling, I’ve found, is that you don’t have to work very hard on vocal phrasing cuz you’re already kind of wired the same way. After the show lots of people were telling us we should record our version of Bobcaygeon and we finally got around to doing it, 3 years later.

“The Hip were my first show, my dad took me to see the Day for Night tour in 1995, I was 11 years old, it was definitely one of the first, ‘I wanna do that!’ moments in my life. Mariel is the younger sibling so discovered the Hip by stealing away with the albums I’d leave lying around my bedroom floor. We’ve both seen them countless times live and they’re a huge reason we both decided to chase after this music thing.”

In addition to releasing their rendition of “Bobcaygeon”, Mariel and Tim will be performing together as ‘The Buckleys’ throughout Alberta this December. They’ll each be selecting songs from their respective catalogues. Full tour dates can be found below.

MORE ABOUT MARIEL BUCKLEY
Born and raised on the prairies in a conservative core, Buckley spent most of her youth playing hockey, getting into trouble and writing it all down. After dabbling in guitar for near a decade, she took up some bar gigs, playing mostly traditional country music. Buckley began writing original music in her early twenties and found a natural comfort in speaking her mind through song. After several years of honing her craft on and off the stage, she began seeing larger support slots – k.d. Lang notably saying: “this kid has a big future.”

Buckley’s first official release, Driving in the Dark (2018), garnered international press and began solidifying her as part of the roots community in North America. With recognition from No Depression, CBC Music, Wide Open Country and PopMatters; she was building momentum quickly. And now after two-years forced hiatus and a new album, she’s ready to continue being a trail in her own right with the new LP, Everywhere I Used To Be. With a firm grip on the steering wheel and a destination in mind - we’re just happy to be along for the ride.

MORE ABOUT T. BUCKLEY
Hailing from Calgary, Tim started with a trio that gained a fanbase with three albums of material before they split. Then he made his way as a solo artist, writing songs with John Wort Hannamand Don Henry (Ray Charles, Kathy Mattea), to name a few. Working with a well-known Nashville songwriter like Henry kicked his game up a notch; so, he polished his skills and pushed his arrangements to be what they are today. Buckley's influences run from traditional folk to rock to various music movements worldwide, like Laurel Canyon in the 70s or Greenwich NY café days in the 60s, telling the story in detail and embedding it with a message.

This kind of dedication to craft continues to make Buckley's name known across the Canadian provinces and mid-western states, steadily establishing him as a truly prolific and celebrated songwriter with his eye on the world. T.Buckley's 2018 debut, Miles We Put Behind, was a critical success for the gifted songwriter who pushed his creative boundaries by working with Grammy-nominated and multi-genre enthusiast, producer/engineer Howard Bilerman. The slick-yet-measured interpretation of Buckley's tooth and bone songwriting style gave new life to his narratives and earned a Canadian Folk MusicAward nomination. For a young writer, getting such accolades was eye-opening and humbling.

PRAISE FOR MARIEL BUCKLEY’S EVERYWHERE I USED TO BE

" I don't know if it's Buckley's dream to be an essential new voice in Canadian music, but she is. Everywhere I Used to Be should prove that." - CBC Music

“There’s a grit to Mariel Buckley’s voice that can’t be manufactured with studio wizardry. She can hit heavenly registers, but always with a tinge of angst, like tasting a bit of coffee grounds at the bottom of a cup of velvety coffee, the mark of handcrafted majesty. …Everywhere I Used To Be is a tremendous showcase of Buckley’s talents.” The Edmonton Journal

"...her sophomore slam-dunk...a synth country masterpiece" - No Depression

It’s heart on your sleeve, uncompromising, honest stuff. An album of self-acceptance which is beautifully delivered. …Exceptional and sincere.” Americana UK

"The first single is "Shooting at the Moon," a propulsive heartland rock/alt-country song that comes with soaring pedal steel, a War On Drugs-y rhythm section, and a hook from Mariel that you'll be humming after one listen.” - Brooklyn Vegan on “Shooting At The Moon”

"...a shimmering pop gem. It’s driving AF and gallops with country flair, but it’s low on twang. And that’s just fine – Buckley sounds very much in charge in her new sonic digs, coupled with the production styling of Marcus Paquin” - Country Queer on “Shooting At The Moon”
