Producer, songwriter, and creative force Austra has added another dimension to her talents as she composes the original score for Canadian documentary feature, Swan Song. Swan Song is Stelmanis’ first film score and sees her taking an entirely different approach to music making. Drawing upon her classical upbringing, the synth-based score was composed using only a Juno-106, a Mellotron and her voice, providing dissonant textures and complementary melodies that interpolate Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.

Speaking about her work, Stelmanis said, “Scoring Swan Song has been a dream project. My first ever experience performing was as a kid singing in the orchestra pit for the National Ballet of Canada's Nutcracker sometime in the 90s and my love for Tchaicovsky has sustained ever since. For this project, I was influenced by artists like Vangelis and Oneohtrix Point Never to compose a deep, textured, almost entirely electronic score that traverses the spectacular music of Swan Lake.”

Katie Austra Stelmanis has been better known by her middle name for four albums, twelve years, and countless tours. The vivid music of Austra is born of the creative force that is the producer, songwriter and composer with the most powerful instrument at her disposal - her voice, one that is capable of effortlessly evoking moments of personal and universal drama.

In 2011 Austra was nominated for a JUNO Award and made the Polaris Music Prize shortlist for her debut album, Feel It Break. In 2013, she made the Polaris Long List for her second album, Olympia. Her music has been lauded by publications like Pitchfork, NME, New York Magazine and Exclaim!.

In the space where melody and emotion intertwine, a new artistic approach has emerged: Echoes of…. Hailing from the northern expanse of Iqaluit, Nunavut, this evolving artistic endeavour draws inspiration from the beauty of their hometown, infusing their music with the spirit and stories of the people, neighbourhoods, and experiences of life in Iqaluit.

Fronted by the vocals of Andrew Morrison (The Jerry Cans, Terry Uyarak, Aakuluk Music), Echoes of… is an approach to creating music that prioritizes collaboration which leads to a mesmerizing auditory journey. The lyrics delve into the heart of life in Nunavut, inviting listeners to explore a day in the life of one of Canada’s most fascinating cities: Iqaluit, Nunavut. Echoes of… seeks to express the rich tapestry of all the different ways of being in Nunavut while sharing a glimpse into the breathtaking lifescapes, along with the ways in which we respond to the challenges faced by a resilient community.

Today, Morrison shares the first single, “anaanaga” which was recorded during COVID-19 isolation requirements. In Nunavut, a 2-week hotel isolation period was required to return to the Territory. The track was captured while Andrew brought his kids to visit his mother / their grandmother for the last time. This was the last song he ever sang to his mother and this release is an ode to the deep beauty of that moment.

MORE ABOUT ECHOES OF…
The intricate layers of sound, meticulously crafted by a wide-range of collaborators including James Ungalaq (Northern Haze), Terry Uyarak, Ivaana, Naja P, Jace Lasek (Besnard Lakes), and Maazes, the group draws on a diverse group of skilled instrumentalists and producers to create a sonic landscape that echoes the rugged beauty - and collaborative spirit - of the North. From Nunavut, to Greenland, to the Northwest Territories, to Montreal, Echoes of… is a response to increasingly industry-driven musical reality faced in Canada’s north.

Rooted in a deep dedication to collaborative art, the songs by Echoes of… are an exploration of death, loss, love and what life means after it all. Scents of indie rock, folk-pop, and soul-stirring alternative sounds converge to capture the essence of life at the edge of the world.

Echoes of… music is a celebration of the communities, the people, and the stories that live and breathe in modern day Iqaluit. Their songs touch upon the warmth of community, the icy embrace of isolation - whether self-imposed or exerted by outside forces - and the deep connection to nature that shapes daily life.

With a commitment to honouring the past while forging ahead, Echoes of… has become a vessel for both personal introspection and shared empathy. The release of this music is as much a process of grappling with the complexity of human experience while exploring what it means to continue to move through life. Echoes of… hopes to inspire listeners to explore their own creativity, to venture into unknown depths of themselves, while drawing on the resilience and spirit of their communities.

As they step into the public light, Echoes of… seeks to be more than a band; they are the musical representation of life-long relationships between artists in the North. In this way, Echoes of… is a sonic bridge, connecting worlds through melody and emotion, infused with the soul of Nunavut. Echoes of… invites you on an extraordinary expedition into a new plain of heart / music / culture.

HELENA DELAND ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM, GOODNIGHT SUMMERLAND

Photo Credit : Lawrence Fafard // DOWNLOAD HIGH-RES

“I am thrilled to announce my second album Goodnight Summerland with the release of the song ‘Bright Green Vibrant Gray’,” says Montreal artist Helena Deland. “I wrote the song thinking of a trip I took to a town on the St. Lawrence River, in Charlevoix, Quebec, where the rolling hills and dramatic cliffs were shaped by a meteorite striking the region over 400 million years ago. Upon impact, its geology changed forever, and since then, erosion has slowly done its work.

“I wrote ‘Bright Green Vibrant Gray’ shortly after losing my mother. On the scale of our human lives, we might recognize the watershed moments, but there is no telling how deeply or subtly they affect us. Lyrically, the song is interested in contrasts – the immediacy and acuity of a nascent romance in the context of larger forces such as geological time. I was interested in contextualizing an encounter between two people within nature’s humbling and overwhelming scale, which outlasts and ultimately subsumes any smaller and human-scale experiences within it. In discovering another person, there is a heightened awareness, a life-affirming purposefulness. It is akin to creative inspiration; the painter in the video whose work holds such power and immediate force to her ultimately wonders where her work will end up after she’s gone.

When I first went to Sam Owens’ studio, we made this version of the song, which led to the decision to record the album together. ‘Bright Green Vibrant Gray’ will accompany ‘Swimmer’ and ‘Spring Bug’ on Goodnight Summerland, my own humble painting of sorts.”

The announcement of Goodnight Summerland and the release of the single “Bright Green Vibrant Gray” is accompanied by a video directed by Xavier Beldor.
