“Vancouver indie darling Haley Blais returns with a sophomore album that’s nostalgic for the past and uncertain about the future. The 11-track record unravels themes of conscience, morality and the superego.” The Toronto Star

“Wisecrack finds Blais winningly pushing herself into new territory ... her songs spiked with left-field moments of jagged majesty.”  The Georgia Straight
"The album, which focuses on nostalgia, innocence and shifting family dynamics, is her most personal record. On Wisecrack Blais has achieved both lyrical and sonic cohesion" Exclaim!

Today, Haley Blais releases her sophomore album Wisecrack via Arts & Crafts. Across the eleven tracks of Wisecrack, produced with Dave Vertesi, Haley explores concepts concerned with conscience, morality, and the superego. The album is textured and wryly poetic, oscillating somewhere between a cherished childhood memory and the creation of a new self.

Alongside the album's release, Haley shares the video to focus track "Body". Directed by Bertie Gilbert, the video sees dancer Laurie Case traverse through neighbourhood streets into a playground and across a field with captivating contemporary dance movements. About the sonics of "Body", Haley reflects, "I wanted this song to be my 'Sister' by Angel Olsen moment, with a huge instrumental outro building towards a crescendo of guitars. I think Dave kind of mellowed it out, it has this swagger to it. There’s still the huge swell, but it feels more like a sigh of relief than a big emotional moment."

MORE ABOUT WISECRACK
On Wisecrack, Haley is more confessional, focused, and explorative of darker tones than on anything she has yet produced. For Haley, the purpose of looking backwards was never just for nostalgia’s sake, it’s to come to terms with the past in an effort to push herself forward. Not only is the sophomore effort sonically mature, but its themes are also concerned with maturing. Within the creases of Wisecrack, Haley dives into the existential, everyday worries we all contain but rarely share and lays them bare, performing them exquisitely with profundity, grace, and humour. Wisecrack includes the recently shared track "The Cabin", which arrived with a video directed by Zia Kalyan, "Baby Teeth", which was paired with a video directed by Vancouver VFX artist Shea Oracheski, and "Matchmaker" along with the 2022 singles, "Coolest fucking bitch in town" and "Survivor's Guilt".

Haley is set to hit the road to support Tommy Lefroy this September and October for 8 shows in North America. On October 20th, Haley will perform a hometown album release show for Wisecrack at The Hollywood Theatre in Vancouver before heading over to Europe for a string of shows. Haley is also set to perform at Pitchfork Paris on November 12th at Petit Bain. Full tour routing listed below and ticket information HERE.

MORE ABOUT HALEY BLAIS
About a decade ago, Haley started developing a community and fanbase as a teenager with her diaristic YouTube videos and tender ukulele covers. Since then, Haley, who sang classical opera for ten years, traded in the solo ukulele for a guitar and a five-piece band. In 2020, she released a debut full-length album of jangly pop anthems, Below the Salt, produced with indie staples Tennis and Louise Burns, featuring the vocally powerful, complex slow-burn favourite “Be Your Own Muse.” Below the Salt amassed millions of streams and avid support from publications like NPR, NYLON, and i-D and led to a North American tour with Peach Pit. Ahead of the Wisecrack release, Haley signed with iconic indie label Arts & Crafts.

“The record puts Begonia's internal world on full display, a complex and beautiful diorama dressed by her impeccable vocals and sparse, inventive production — Alexa Dirks has always felt fully formed, but on Powder Blue, she transcends.” - Exclaim!

Next week, Begonia will be performing at the Polaris Music Prize Gala where her latest album, Powder Blue, has been shortlisted for the prestigious award. Whittled down to 10 nominees from over 200 Canadian albums considered, the prize will be handed out at the event which will also be televised courtesy of CBC on Tuesday, September 19.

Today, Begonia (aka, Alexa Dirks) is dropping a new EP that explores a few different iterations of “Marigold”. In addition to an extended cut of the song, the EP also features a guitarmony-laced upbeat reimagining from deadmen, a trip-hop vibe-dive with SUN SUN, and a French House reimagining for the dancefloor from MA BWE. "Marigold is basically a short story about my teenage life,” says Dirks. “A passing reflection that has confirmed for me that all the questions and uncertainties I had as a kid, have value.

“I think It's the shortest song I've ever written yet it always felt like such a big song to me. Sharing parts of myself that I haven't really shared in my music before...mainly the relationship I have to my queerness and my loss of religion. I think subconsciously part of me kept it so short because I was a little afraid of it. Once the album was mastered I had a panic and felt like I had to send a mass email to any person that knew me before like ‘to whom it may concern, I am not straight and I don't believe in the same God anymore. We good?’ Haha, I can't fully describe it but it was like I had a fear of being ‘exposed’ or people questioning me or being disappointed in me. I don't love that I felt that way but it's the truth.

“A song ALWAYS takes on a new meaning to me once we play it live and so we started playing it on tour and all my fears melted away. I watched people singing…and sometimes screaming… the lyrics back to me every night and it lit up something in my brain and my heart honestly. The more I sang it the more I felt like I could say more, I wanted to say more. That I feel so lucky be accepted and loved by all of you special people and that the takeaway is more like...puberty is fucked, life can be fucked but in spite of it all flowers keep growing and so do we."

This Fall, Begonia will be taking Powder Blue from a fake Vegas residency in Winnipeg to the clubs of Europe. Beginning with her hometown release show on September 22 and 23, Begonia will host her own ‘Vegas Residency’ at Winnipeg’s Club Regent Casino and follow up with a run of dates throughout Canada before joining Leith Ross overseas. Full tour dates can be found below and tickets to all dates are available here.

If you haven’t yet had the chance to perform a track from Powder Blue at your local karaoke establishment, Begonia is here to help. Recently, she shared a few interactive videos via her socials produced by Nick Luchak for “Marigold”, “Butterfly”, “Right Here” and “Married By Elvis”. "I used to host karaoke at a bar called The Good Will before I felt confident enough to start this project 6/7 years ago,” says Dirks. “Watching other people experience so much JOY and just the beautiful comradery/absurdity of it all...IT IS MY FAVOURITE. So naturally we had our pal Nick Luchak make some sweetly unhinged karaoke videos for some tracks from Powder Blue." Begonia is inviting fans to remix them/duet them/sing along and to tag her so “I can admire and cry and repost!”

MORE ABOUT POWDER BLUE
On the album’s name, Dirks says, “Powder Blue is more of an emotion. It makes me think of my baby blanket, the colour of the virgin mary’s shawl at the church Christmas play, the airiness of clouds on a summer day, chlorine filled water in a hotel pool, Elvis in the 70s wearing an ill-fitting jumpsuit, the wallpaper in my room growing up, the collection of faded denim jackets in my basement.”

WATCH / SHARE “MARRIED BY ELVIS” HERE

“The name of this album needed to be something that encompasses all of the feelings that these songs give me when they are put together,” Dirks continues. “When I listen to them as a unit, they send me back to the words, the colour. To me, this album holds a muted nostalgia, musings on childhood, the complexities of new love, self love, religion, virginity, and sexuality. There’s an indulgence in emotional depth and pain yet also an indulgence in love and a poppy lightness—two sides I’ve always tried to balance. I feel like I let my guard down even more with this record and decided to not hold back on either end.”

Still from Motewolonuwok Teaser Video

Today, Jeremy Dutcher - the classically trained Two-Spirit song carrier, composer, activist, and member of Neqotkuk (Tobique First Nation) in Eastern Canada – shares an intimate glimpse into the making of his new record, Motewolonuwok, set to be released October 6, 2023 on Secret City Records. The video, shot by Émile Tremblay during and around the recordings in Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang, highlights the profound meaning behind the word Motewolonuwok: “Those who work with that which can be heard but not seen. Magicians. Witches.” Jeremy’s quest throughout this album was to “reclaim that term and understanding that the magic is inherent in who we are.” Watch the video to learn more.

Last week, Jeremy Dutcher has covered Feist's "Graveyard" for the final 2023 edition of the SiriusXM Polaris Music Prize Cover Sessions. You can watch the session filmed at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto HERE. “Having an arrangement be able to untangle my attachment to my own words and deliver them back in my own ears as if they’re someone else’s… that’s the gift Jeremy just gave me with this version. I’m grateful,” tells us Feist about the new life that has been infused into this song.

Dutcher originally vaulted himself into the upper echelons of Canadian performance with his 2018 debut, Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa. Since winning the Polaris Music Prize and JUNO Award, performing for NPR Tiny Desk, and collaborating with Yo-Yo Ma, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Beverly Glenn Copeland, Dutcher returns with Motewolonuwok, a moving and radiant exploration of contemporary Indigeneity and his place within it, presenting his most expansive work yet. The new album also marks Dutcher’s first time writing and singing in English. A powerful invitation for collective healing and understanding, “Shared tongue is a beautiful gift, with a complicated reason,” Dutcher explains. These new English songs are also a way of singing directly to the newcomer, or settler, in their own language — a direct line of communication that seeks to platform his community’s stories of healing, resilience, and emergence to all that may hear.

Motewolonuwok heaves with dynamic orchestration and the inherent drama of grand piano, recalling a long line of artists who have turned the classical establishment on its head to deliver compositions that are doubly ecstatic and modern — luminaries such as Julius Eastman, Perfume Genius, Arthur Russell, Beverly Glenn-Copeland, and Merce Cunningham. More intimate and expansive than anything Dutcher has created before, Motewolonuwok hedges the line between storytelling and composition as both a transcendental protest record and an exploration of self. This is experimental pop as corrective medicine: a defiant, healing, and queer experience that fills any listener with power and wisdom.

EARLY PRAISES FOR MOTEWOLONUWOK
“”Ancestors Too Young” is an urgent rocker, sung from the perspective of a parent devastated by the loss of a daughter. Amid guitar squalls and jittery brushes on the drum kit, tastefully arranged strings by Owen Pallett offer touches of solemnity.” – NPR Music

“[Ancestors Too Young] is a powerful new prism through which the composer shines his light. His plaintive vibrato still reflects his opera training as he sings, […] but his howl eventually rises to a rock-inspired crescendo […]. It's an exciting new direction for the composer's upcoming sophomore album, Motewolonuwok, mixing art rock influences with orchestral swells and a jazz rhythm section.” – Exclaim!’s Staff Picks

“The song [Skicinuwihkuk] is tender and lyrical, but also takes flight on a wave of orchestral sound that amplifies the song’s emotional content” – WNYC “New Sounds”

‘“Skicinuwihkuk” is a moving piece” – CBC Music
