Today, Geordie Gordon, the Toronto singer/songwriter who is currently a member of two internationally acclaimed indie acts, U.S. Girls and Islands, is sharing the latest single off his upcoming album, Tambourine. Gordon says he wrote “Soul Promise” during “a turbulent time of transition. The song speaks to the internal arguments we have between reason and feeling. Making a big decision can be difficult for me, but sometimes a wave of change will swell up inside and override my rational thoughts. ‘Soul Promise’ finds me learning to trust my gut and embrace these changes. The song was originally recorded in 2018 for an unreleased album that ended up dying a digital death on an ancient laptop. Having to produce this song from the ground up felt like a second chance to fulfill a promise to myself.”

The single arrives today with a video produced by Meg Remy and filmed and edited by Colin Medley.

MORE ABOUT GEORDIE GORDON & TAMBOURINE
His second solo album, Tambourine, is Geordie’s own coming-of-age story, in more ways than one. It’s the album that will introduce the world to Geordie Gordon’s depth of talent as a singer, arranger, lyricist and melodicist

Tambourine opens with the title track, about a teenage Geordie (pron. Jordy) taking the bus from his small university town to Toronto to see the Hidden Cameras. There, the closeted teen witnesses an outburst of queer and pansexual joy, where tambourines are passed to the crowd and all are welcome to join the celebration: ‘They were an army of love / With sound raining down from above / lifting their violins / holding their heads high and proud’. The album closes with “Homecoming”, a song written after Geordie listened to an audiobook by activist Cleve Jones. “He worked with Harvey Milk, and in a short few years he went from being this hippie boy in the late ’60s to later running the AIDS quilt after losing all his friends. That song is a tribute to the ancestors for their brave service.”

Geordie Gordon was 16 when gay marriage was made legal in his home province of Ontario. He was raised in an accepting community of hippies and leftist punks. He’s a son of James Gordon, a successful Canadian folk singer covered by the Cowboy Junkies on The Trinity Session. Geordie formed his first band as a teenager, the misnomered Barmitzvah Brothers (featuring Bird City’s Jenny Mitchell). They toured Canada and were on the cover of Toronto’s Now Magazine. They sounded like nothing else on the thriving Canadian indie scene at the time: junkstore instruments, unusual lyrics, and a childlike sense of play—because they were still actual children.

“I had such a different childhood than most coming-of-age stories,” says Geordie. “Even before high school, I learned that being quirky was a thing. My band never tried to fit in, and yet we were embraced by older people and the indie scene. I had so many sensitive music friends that I wasn’t in a toxic area. It was a unique environment; it wasn’t very typically straight.”

Musically, Tambourine is also a coming-of-age statement, and his boldest project to date. His first album, in 2014, was made with his brother Evan under the name The Magic. His first solo album, The Tower, was a very solitary affair and came out during the pandemic—release shows were hampered by new lockdowns.

This time out, Geordie is writing on tenor guitar for the first time, tapping into the folk influences of his childhood. “My brother and I were never like my dad, a folk festival singer, who goes to workshops and talks about his songs,” he says. “So for me it’s a fun challenge to get closer to that.” Geordie’s not playing folk festivals yet, but he did host secret shows by candlelight in Toronto parks during the pandemic.

Everything about Tambourine is a huge leap forward for Geordie. The layered vocal harmonies explore both his falsetto heights and the lower end of his register. The electronics of The Tower are still present, as are the soft pop vibes of U.S. Girls and Islands.

From teenage awakenings to the wisdom of elders, Tambourine is the record Geordie Gordon was born to make. And he’s just getting started.

Today, Gabrielle Shonk is on the road with Dan Mangan for a run of Canadian tour dates before joining up with Men I Trust in Toronto. Full tour dates can be found below. In addition, the JUNO Award nominated artist is sharing the new video for “5AM” from her latest album, Across The Room, out now via Arts & Crafts.

Directed by Gerado Alcaine with Director of Photography Jay Boivin, Shonk says she wrote “5AM” basically “telling a story about running into an ex at a party and then going home together after a long night of inhibition. The choruses then express a desire to rekindle and fix the relationship through idealistic ideas as if nothing were ever broken. When Gerardo and Jay presented the concept of the video to me, I was really happy they came up with an idea that expressed elements of the song without being a direct visual interpretation of the lyrics.

“In ‘5AM’ you can see the main character (Antoine Nicolas) escaping a reality that seems bland and uncomfortable through a VR mask, which he carries around with him. To me the music video has many layers of interpretation, but I’ve been going back to the idea of living in denial as a way to cope with the uneasiness and anxiety of life. There’s also a pretty big correlation with the distractions of the ‘modern world’ and a lot of people coming out of the past three years of isolation with a new sense of social anxiety. At the end of the video, the lines between both worlds become blurred, which makes me think about how pretending and escaping can feel good for a while, but it can only get you so far. At some point you can get lost in it and it’s really just a short-term band-aid. Huge thanks to everyone who participated and put their hearts into this video, it means the (VR) world!

MORE ABOUT ACROSS THE ROOM
How do you come back to yourself? First, it’s important to understand you have become lost, and admit you’ve veered off path. How then do you begin to piece yourself back together? This is the journey Gabrielle Shonk, the JUNO Award-nominated singer and songwriter, takes us on with her sophomore album, Across The Room, set for release February 24, 2023.

The eleven-track record chronicles the big and small feelings of heartache, and the hope that comes with endings and new beginnings. This excavation of self and purpose seemed to be a long time coming. “It's not always the easiest to look inward. But, when it is easy, you hold on to all those small victories— finding a sense of wholeness within yourself,” says Shonk.

Searching for a sense of wholeness has been central to Shonk’s path in the five years since her self-titled debut album. Conversations about a sophomore record began not long after the success of her debut, with her former major label asking to see and hear new material. Shonk recalls succumbing to a self-critical, internal pressure during that time for what that next album would be; a creative blockage that made her unsure of what she wanted to say at all.

Some songs on Across The Room are a few years old. They began as stowed away writing projects in green rooms; whatever downtime she had during a busy touring schedule, Shonk and frequent collaborator and co-writer Jessy Caron (Men I Trust) worked on new material together. Out of those sessions emerged “Reminds Me of You”, a wistful, sombre song emanating a familiar feeling of grief when everything reminds you of the love you’ve lost. The coalescence of the track was natural, and Shonk started to feel renewed confidence.

Across The Room was recorded during the first half of 2022, splitting production time around rural Quebec and Montreal with Mac Cormack. Shonk brought herself fully into view. “I found my creative groove. I felt so much more grounded, independent and confident in my own capacities as an artist, musician, and songwriter, and stopped blocking and judging my creative flow, which gave me my best work yet,” she says.

Today, Toronto-based singer, songwriter, and musician Kelly Sloan is sharing another new track from her upcoming album, Insides Out, set for release on November 1 from Victory Pool Records. “I Wanna Wake Up” explores a moment that Sloan says happened, “a few years ago when I found a stack of journal entries that I had written when I was 15 and head-over-heels in love with someone. Going through them was embarrassing and also like reading someone's else's words. A young person who was looking at love before having experienced any of the woes or heartache associated with it. This heart was a freshly baked cake; no cut marks, no burns. I imagined what it would be like to wake up like that. A new-born heart and mind before experience shaped them. What did it feel like? It’s hard to remember. So, I wanted to try to imagine for a few moments.”

MORE ABOUT KELLY SLOAN & INSIDES OUT
If what we see in another person is a picture made up of all their personal experiences, feelings, and inclinations, Kelly Sloan would be one of those collages that look like one big thing from a distance, but when you look more closely you see that it's made up of hundreds of smaller pictures. Her music is the result of heartfelt, honest attempts to make sense of a wildly varied career in music and life, somehow arriving at a coherent – and in this case, downright elegant – artistic statement. Insides Out is the latest album from Sloan presenting nine glistening tracks that pair classic piano-led pop songwriting with warm, enveloping atmospherics and tasteful playing from some of the city's finest musicians. The album was produced by Jeff McMurrich, a prolific collaborative force who has shepherded critically acclaimed albums by the likes of Jennifer Castle, U.S. Girls, and Owen Pallett.

Sloan's music does share certain characteristics with some of the leading lights of the last decade's female fronted singer-songwriter resurgence (Sharon Van Etten, Big Thief, Angel Olsen), but she actually has far more in common with titans of the form from previous generations. The essence of classic '70s acts like Carole King, Rita Coolidge, and Stevie Nicks are conjured, and 90s-era women in song such as Tori Amos and Natalie Merchant may also come to mind, but the record is far from any sort of retro exercise. Sloan's nimble melodic sense, at once playful and melancholic (see “Russian Smile” and “I Wanna Wake Up”) also recalls more contemporary pop songsmiths like Jenny Lewis, and Natalie Mehring (aka Weyes Blood), and she has that enviable knack for writing songs that sound familiar at first glance, but on closer inspection, really couldn't have been written by anyone but her.

Sonically, the album is a joy to behold, with a winning blend of intimacy, drifting atmospherics, and – when needed – warm, punchy instrumentation. Certain tracks are delivered perfectly with just the bedrock of Sloan's piano and voice, but other songs benefit from crucial contributions by other players drawn from the Toronto scene, including Matthew 'Doc' Dunn on vibraphone, cellist/vocalist Eliza Niemi, bassist Mike Smith (Jennifer Castle), and drummer Kieran Adams (The Weather Station). The drums and bass in particular help conjure some of that burnished 70s feel – heard to great effect on opening track “Warm Enough” – but Sloan's voice, obviously a formidable instrument itself, is treated to an array of tasteful effects and recording techniques that offer the songs a gossamer-like veneer and create a slight bit of remove from the first-person directness that one may associate with your average singer-songwriter album. “No Worse Way To Go” provides an aesthetic contrast to the majority of the piano-bass-drums format of the album, instead sounding like Kate Bush recorded in an intimate bedroom studio, with soft drum machine rhythms underpinning reverberating piano chords and washes of electronic sounds.

PRE-SAVE INSIDES OUT HERE

Sloan is a classically trained vocalist with years of experience as a professional singer in a staggering variety of contexts, from work as a soloist with the Dalhousie Russian choir to Country & Western musical theatre revues, to other work in the indie-pop-folk realm, such as the Alias Ensemble, her recent English folk-infused collaboration with Dave Nardi and the chameleonic Daniel Romano. In the world of pop music, this training can almost act as a hindrance in less capable hands, but Sloan's voice here is a glorious, emotive anchor to the tasteful surroundings cooked up by McMurrich and her supporting cast of musicians.

The lyrical threads weaving together the songs on the aptly titled Insides Out are largely introspective meditations, and although they sometimes begin in a darker place, Sloan says “I tend not to write depressing songs from start to finish. They generally seem to have an encouraging nudge, an uplifting hook, or at least a pleasant resignation.” As with the best pop music, these less-than-sunny sentiments are contrasted with warm, glowing musical surroundings, and as such the music on Insides Out definitely does not exist in a downcast light. To this end, Sloan recalls a chat with her cousin, who observed that “my songs don’t make people feel sad. They make people feel OK about their sadness.”

Insides Out is an album that will undoubtedly make you feel more than just OK, for a whole bunch of good reasons.
