Today, Jeremy Dutcher - the classically trained Two-Spirit song carrier, composer, activist, and member of Neqotkuk (Tobique First Nation) in Eastern Canada – shares the final single before his sophomore album is released into the world this Friday. “Pomawsuwinuwok Wonakiyawolotuwok” translates to ‘people are rising’ and is a “resistance song for all voices.” Jeremy shares the inspiration behind the piece: “Inspired by a traditional Wolastoq melody that is expanded on, this song was supposed to be on my first record, but I could never find a way to make the chorus right. I wanted to write a song that flowed between Wolastoqey language and English, in hopes of calling as many to the table as possible to witness the rising.”

our struggle isn’t
in the fields [as it once was]
it’s in the streets
the people are rising

The video, directed by tranquilo and Jeremy Dutcher was filmed during the Tobique Neqotkuk Annual Pow Wow. It is “in support, collaboration, and celebration with the Wabanaki Communities,” say tranquilo. “Gathered on 16mm film and in bright bloom; the promise of collective futures, the Wolastoqey language, the Two-Spirit space. Land Back. It has been an honour to be among your communities’ heartbeat.”

Jeremy Dutcher has been crowned in the UK as the MOJO Rising Artist in the September issue and the magazine gave the record ★★★★, stating “there is real weight behind these songs, and Motewolonuwok carries it with sombre grace.” Rolling Stone France also shares the ★★★★ status calling the album “a total and captivating success” while Télérama adds “richly orchestrated, his intimate ballads unfold an intense dramaturgy to transcend the pain of oppression and express the soothing beauty of resilience.” Jeremy was recording sessions recently in New York with WNYC “New Sounds” and in Paris for RFI radio.

Dutcher originally vaulted himself into the upper echelons of Canadian performance with his 2018 debut, Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa. Since winning the Polaris and JUNO Prizes, performing for NPR Tiny Desk, and collaborating with Yo-Yo Ma, Buffy St. Marie and Beverly Glenn Copeland, Dutcher returns with Motewolonuwok, a moving and radiant exploration of contemporary Indigeneity and his place within it, presenting his most expansive work yet. The new album also marks Dutcher’s first time writing and singing in English. A powerful invitation for collective healing and understanding, “Shared tongue is a beautiful gift, with a complicated reason,” Dutcher explains. These new English songs are also a way of singing directly to the newcomer, or settler, in their own language — a direct line of communication that seeks to platform his community’s stories of healing, resilience, and emergence to all that may hear.

Motewolonuwok heaves with dynamic orchestration and the inherent drama of grand piano, recalling a long line of artists who have turned the classical establishment on its head to deliver compositions that are doubly ecstatic and modern — luminaries such as Julius Eastman, Perfume Genius, Arthur Russell, Beverly Glenn-Copeland, and Merce Cunningham. More intimate and expansive than anything Dutcher has created before, Motewolonuwok hedges the line between storytelling and composition as both a transcendental protest record and an exploration of self. This is experimental pop as corrective medicine: a defiant, healing, and queer experience that fills any listener with power and wisdom.

EARLY PRAISE FOR MOTEWOLONUWOK

“[Ancestors Too Young] is a powerful new prism through which the composer shines his light. His plaintive vibrato still reflects his opera training as he sings, […] but his howl eventually rises to a rock-inspired crescendo […]. It's an exciting new direction for the composer's upcoming sophomore album, Motewolonuwok, mixing art rock influences with orchestral swells and a jazz rhythm section.” – Exclaim!’s Staff Picks

“”Ancestors Too Young” is an urgent rocker, sung from the perspective of a parent devastated by the loss of a daughter. Amid guitar squalls and jittery brushes on the drum kit, tastefully arranged strings by Owen Pallett offer touches of solemnity.” – NPR Music

“The song [Skicinuwihkuk] is tender and lyrical, but also takes flight on a wave of orchestral sound that amplifies the song’s emotional content” – WNYC “New Sounds”

Next month, Busty and the Bass will release their newly announced album, Forever Never Cares, a record which sounds, at once, of a bygone era and completely modern, featuring dynamic live performances, expansive arrangements, and a wide array of vocal approaches including the heartfelt expressiveness of founding member Alistair Blu, the otherworldly falsetto of Jordan Brown, the smokey soul of Katie Tupper, the power of Son Little, and the playfulness of Magi Merlin. The moment you think you know which direction the album is going, it takes another unexpected turn, but you are always delighted by the eventual destination.

“Forever Never Cares is a gentle reminder to let go of attachment,” explains vocalist Alistair Blu. “The album is about leaving behind the small things in life that we obsess over. It’s about embracing uncertainty.” And for a group of musicians entering a period of change, it’s a testament to their creative connection that they were able to produce their most cohesive and adventurous album to date.

“This album is the culmination of 10 years as a band,” says Christopher Vincent. “All the ups and downs, members coming and going. But it’s also a crystallization of what we’ve been trying to achieve for years.”

Today, they share the new single, “Give Me A Smile” featuring Son Little, a slow burn R&B ballad about the search for love and understanding during difficult moments in a romantic relationship. "It speaks to the dance of longing for moments of connection while trying not to be consumed by the tension of the present moment," explains bassist Milo Johnson, who wrote the hook for the song. Inspired by 6/8 gospel-soul tracks of the 60’s and 70’s, specifically the lesser known B-Side ballads from Funkadelic. The track breathes psychedelia and soul, while still retaining its more intimate lyrical themes.

MORE ABOUT FOREVER NEVER CARES
For the Canadian-American soul-jazz collective Busty and the Bass, collaboration has always been at the forefront of their music. Formed at McGill University in Montreal over a decade ago, the group is now scattered across four North American cities from coast to coast. Yet, with a collaborative spirit at the heart of their third studio album, Forever Never Cares, the members have never been more connected.

Over the years, the group has collaborated with legendary artists George Clinton, Macy Gray, Earth Wind & Fire, Slum Village, and exciting new voices like Polaris Music Prize winners Cadence Weapon and Pierre Kwenders. Most recently, the group dropped a mini-album with Philadelphia poet and rapper STS. Despite such a strong history of partnerships, Forever Never Cares reshaped the band’s creative formula and redefined how they worked together a decade into their career.

After a founding member and primary songwriter left the band in 2022, the collective used the opportunity to re-approach their creative process for the first time in years. Songs would be brought to the group from individual members or smaller formations of two or three members writing together. Interestingly, more voices involved in the songwriting resulted in the group’s most refined output to date.

Two previous studio albums, Uncommon Good (2017) and Eddie (2020), saw the band experiment with genres effortlessly changing styles song to song, from soul to funk to pop.

Forever Never Cares finds the collective both broadening and distilling their influences into a unified sound that is entirely their own. This is due in large part to founding member Christopher Vincent who engineered and mixed the album. Vincent found a sonic language that would compliment all of the disparate genres being stacked atop one another.

With soul and R&B as the album’s cornerstone, the record is sprinkled with cross-genre explorations. From the indie rock-inflected uptempo singles “All The Things I Couldn’t Say To You” and “Wandering Lies,” to slow-burn ballads like “Give Me A Smile” and “Never Get Enough,” to the celebratory pop-funk of “Starstruck” and “No Angels,” a touch of 70s singer-songwriter on “Smoke and the Pine” and “Holiday Drive,” and the psychedelic jazz explorations of “Far From Here” and “No Self Control” featuring saxophonist Terrace Martin, a frequent collaborator of Kamasi Washington and Robert Glasper.

“Evangeline Gentle's self-titled album is a triumph” - Exclaim!

“Gentle's voice communicates an aching warmth that comes with knowing hardness and choosing softness instead… every time I listen to the record, I'm blown away anew by their songwriting and the space they're carving out across multiple genres — indie pop, alt-folk, singer-songwriter — in a way that feels effortless" - CBC Music

Produced by Jim Bryson, mixed by Daniel Ledwell and mastered by Philip Shaw Bova, Evangeline Gentle’s Where The Diamonds Ares takes an energizing leap in the indie-pop direction. “These 10 songs have provided a container for my peak experiences of joy, resilience, shame, ancestral trauma-healing, grief, love and queerness,” says Gentle. “Each track is an expression of reverence for the resilience of women and femmes in its own way. From the writing process to the recording process, the experience of making Where The Diamonds Are has been an empowering one. My hope is that this album will be empowering for its listeners too, and I can’t wait to share in September.”

Of the new single “Fall Again” Evangeline says ”it is about teetering on the edge of falling in love again with someone you know you shouldn’t. It’s playful and cheeky, and doesn’t take its themes of learning self-restraint too seriously. ‘I’m like a full moon baby, I bring out the best and the worst in you’ is one of my favourite lyrics from Where The Diamonds Are. By the light of some relationships, we become saints, by the light of others, we become werewolves.”

Equally as unapologetic in its celebration of queer culture as opener “Bad Girls” is the track “Gay Bar”, which has us “dressed up and feeling like a shiny star”, and imagining the neon-lit dance floor of a utopian Gay Bar. Inspired by the words of Dolly Parton, “be a diamond in a rhinestone world”, Evangeline claims she’s “where the diamonds are” when in the company of “Radiant [drag] queens adorned in jewels” who provide respite from the “troubled world” outside.

“Underdog” is the album’s leading feminist anthem  and is set to empower relating listeners with lyrics such as “calling me a crazy bitch won’t silence and degrade me, I speak my mind especially when men  underestimate me”. Ablaze with Venusian themes of feminine desire and  boasting the album’s most powerful vocal moments by both Evangeline and  backing vocalist Carleigh Aikins alike, “Waters” is a smouldering, defining track. “Sarah” is a break-up ballad for the still-in-love and features guest vocalist Stewart Legere, while “Bad Kids” is a love song for the tight-knit group of queer  youth Gentle spent her teen years with as troublemakers. “High Vibes” brings the spiritual realm of Evangeline’s creative process into sharper focus, its vulnerability opening the door for “He’ll Do It Again”, an attempt to convince a  domestic violence survivor to leave. The dark and dream-like sonic landscape of “Deceive Lie Cheat Steal” mimics the relevant emotional wooziness of guilt and remorse. Closing track “Fall Again” is a folk-pop mood-booster and memorable finale.
