Today, Rose Cousins, Jill Barber, and Jenn Grant are coming together as a ‘trio’ to share their cover of Blue Rodeo’s “Dark Angel”, from their record Five Days In July, an LP that “is woven into our Canadian landscape,” claims Cousins. “That record, especially ‘Dark Angel’, was a top song in the soundtrack of my teen emotional world.”

Last Spring, Barber and Grant were backstage at the Blue Rodeo concert in Vancouver, when “Jim Cuddy turned to us and suggested that, along with Rose Cousins, we should form a trio... like a Canadian version of the Dolly Parton, Linda Rondstadt and Emmylou Harris ‘Trio’,” explains Barber. “The next thing we knew we were sending Rose a video message saying: ‘we're doing this, because Jim said so’.”

Having all grown up with Blue Rodeo, spinning Five Days In July as the soundtrack to their adolescence, Barber, Cousins, and Grant also all experienced their coming of age together in the Halifax music scene as young spirit sister-singer-songwriters. “I have been friends with Rose and Jill since I began in this industry and in that way it has very much felt like we have grown up together, and understand each other on a level that is rare and special,” says Grant.

“I treasure these women and it’s deeply pleasing to have recorded something together,” adds Cousins. “Especially this meaningful song on the 30th anniversary of an album we all love so much by a band we love and have now all shared the stage with, which my teen self hardly believes.” Barber adds that “the idea to record a haunting cover of ‘Dark Angel’, that weaves our three voices together in harmony for the first time (on record), felt as if it was always meant to be.”

“There’s so much love in these voices,” says Grant. “It’s an honour to be a part of it, to celebrate the anniversary of a band we truly love, and friendships that will last a lifetime.”

MORE ABOUT JENN GRANT
Jenn has been nominated for three JUNO Awards to date, several East Coast Music and Music Nova Scotia nominations and wins over the years, and has been long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize. In recent years Jenn’s music has been used across several international ad campaigns, trailers, TV shows and her song “Dreamer” is the long running theme music for the CBCs ‘Heartland’ now going into its 17th Season.

Born on Prince Edward Island, a small maritime province on the east coast of Canada, famous for its lush sand dunes and ocean tails rising up to meet a vast, open sky. There is an undeniably ethereal quality to Grant's voice and her music, described by Australia's The Age is that of “dreamy, harp-and woodwinds folk, the work of a painter born in paradise” Consequence of Sound cite “majestic vocals” whilst Pop Matters refer to her voice as a “Aural Equivalent of a Warm Embrace”.

Jenn's 2023 release Champagne Problems gathered 13 musicians from coast to territory to coast in a series of collaborative Canadian magic tricks spun into classic country, lost disco hits, and ruminative folk fables - artists include Afie Jurvanen (Bahamas), Amy Millan (Stars), Aquakultre, Basia Bulat, Dan Mangan, Hannah Georgas, Joel Plaskett, Josh Qaumariaq, Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene), Kim Harris, Ria Mae, Slow Leaves and Tim Baker.

Champagne Problems is a unique musical experience that could have only come out of extenuating circumstances, willing partners, and profound vulnerability. It could have only come out of Jenn Grant.

LAL SHARES NEW TRACK FROM UPCOMING LP

Photo Credit: Diego Israel | Plastique Famille // DOWNLOAD HIGH-RES

Today, LAL (Nicholas Murray and Rosina Kazi) is sharing a new song and video from their upcoming eighth album and film project, SPECTACULAR, which brings together amazingly talented artists whom they have worked with throughout the group’s 25 year history.

The new song, “Moments of Release” speaks to “the ways in which we find love with community and, for me, music and nature,” says Kazi. “It is about the constant back and forth between grief and joy, whether it be old or new wounds, we can and do find ways to heal, and find love, in a world that often does not encourage or hold us. So we find moments, through dancing, music, sharing, stories, sun rises and sunsets, full and new moons, gatherings, meditation, walking, being creative and still, and releasing that into the world, no words can describe the feeling of transcendence, and how it is such a powerful gift.”

The video teaser is part of a larger film from director José Garcia that will be released with the album. The project involved locations in Ontario, Alberta, and Nova Scotia. “A surreal series of dream scapes filmed throughout a year,” says Garcia. “The film was built slowly with a community of artists putting their skills together in a series of collaborations for each shoot. Some of the times the shoot involved 15 people and other times just two people. The locations were chosen carefully, with a strong emphasis on wardrobe and costumes matching the natural colours of each location. The season for each shoot was also an important factor.

“One other important factor in this process was to not try to do everything in a short concentrated production schedule as is typical in the industry. Instead by doing sometimes one scene at a time, we were able to reflect and adjust our approach for the next set of scenes.  This period of reflection allowed for new people to be added and new energies to flow.”

MORE ABOUT SPECTACULAR
Written in the second half of the pandemic, where COVID life continued up and down for two years in Toronto, LAL, after 27 years of being romantic partners, decided that in order to grow and be better to each other and their music, needed to separate.

“#CovidLife! As the pandemic ensued for two long years, taking more and more lives, forcing us inside, yet again, SPECTACULAR began its inception, in the later part of lockdown, in Toronto,” says the band. “As LAL's founding members, we found ourselves going through both public and personal changes that would ultimately lay the building blocks for us to grow as humans but also thrive as artists, and our music would never be the same again.”

On SPECTACULAR, LAL says it was “born out of our time of extreme upheaval and uncertainty, forced us to work together to maintain, and transform each other as well as ourselves, for the better. Our trust in our friendship and love (though changed), had continued to move mountains, and add to the worlds we have already built to nurture and protect us for so long. The lyrics and music that came out of LAL as a result continues to manifest dreams and allow us to do what we do best. Because uplifting our love for each other, our fams and communities continue to find us strength in one another as we keep on being the artists, weirdos and people who find strength in ourselves.

For SPECTACULAR, LAL partnered with good friend and long-time collaborator Jose Garcia-Lozano to create a ‘Part 2’ to the Meteors Could Come Down album and film, which features new and old collaborators, who are all friends. Artists such as Ange Loft, Tannis Nielsen, Sedina Fiati,  Hannia Cheng, B. Soloman, Victoria Mata, Franny Galore-Wngz, Erum Khan, Jaek Eastcott, Kai Jackman, Max Zimmerman, Gautam Pinto, Easy Life Studios, Plastique, Shireen Fahimi, Melissa Vincent, and Noel Nanton of Typotherapy Design, helped make this album and film magical. Also with Yann Gracia who conceptualized, directed, and filmed an amazing live performance video by the quartet, with support from Felix Mendelssohn.

Musicians Viktor kei, Ian de Souza, and Jonathan Adjemian added to the healing process of making this album. Jean Martin, who mixed and helped with the very new sound that Murr has created by intimate recording sessions, the sharing of files online, sampling and working with ROSINA, who wrote most of the songs by themselves, in the early morning.

This project is only a small reflection of the underground network LAL has cultivated for over 25 years. SPECTACULAR aims to celebrate each other, and the world that we have committed to, one that embraces love, equity, community, care, grief, anger, healing, fucked-up-ness and forgiveness.

ANDY SHAUF RELEASES VIDEO FOR “HALLOWEEN STORE”, ANNOUNCES SOLO TOUR

Today, Andy Shauf presents a music video for “Halloween Store” — one of “the best two songs on [Norm]…grounded by acoustic guitar but [featuring] lush instrumental breaks and repeating hooks” (Variety) – and announces a 2024 solo tour. In an enlightening interview with Stereogum in which he shared the story behind every song on the album, Shauf revealed “Halloween Store” was one of the first written for Norm, mulled over and reworked from when he envisioned it as a disco record. “It’s definitely a Halloween story,” he said, “I was hoping to put it out around Halloween, but I missed deadlines.” Now, with Halloween just around the corner, Shauf shines a flashlight on the much-adored Norm standout and “the album’s peak” (Treble). The hand-drawn “Halloween Store” video is charming and timely, a perfect visual accompaniment for the fast-approaching holiday.

Next spring, Shauf will embark on a North American solo tour, bringing his beloved live set to a slew of intimate venues in major cities and smaller markets. A full list of dates are below, and tickets are on-sale this Friday at 10am ET.

Recently, Denmark’s Brodie Sessions released a special performance by Shauf and his band performing Norm’s title track, “Halloween Store” and “Sunset”. This was shot on 16mm and filmed at H.C. Ørsted Power Station in Copenhagen.

FOR BRODIE SESSIONS

As hailed by Pitchfork, "[Shauf's] eighth album, Norm, is his most meticulous and beguiling, straying from his semi-autobiographical past work to span three perspectives and tactfully downplaying its philosophical quandaries with his lushest arrangements to date.” Shauf wrote, performed and recorded the album in its entirety and enlisted Neal Pogue (Outkast, Tyler, The Creator) to mix. Pogue took the music’s sonic framework in a new direction, one with a greater sense of clarity and lots of space. Listen closely, and deep in the music, a shift happens as the world goes sideways. The tempo slows, vertigo slips in, or a discordant note appears. An uneasy clarinet phrase devolves into a busy signal. A lyric veers from a bird’s-eye-view to intimate thoughts. The result is a recognizable Shauf production, but with a flowing landscape of suppressed grooves propelling the songs toward uncertain destinations. He’s driving us out to a wild and dangerous place.

PRAISE FOR ANDY SHAUF AND NORM

"Norm is a gorgeously produced collection of short folk-fiction. When given closer attention, the album unfurls into an anthology of dark, interconnected tales of loss, unrequited love and casual brushes with the divine." — Variety

"Shauf has a knack for those sorts of observational details, and he approaches writing lyrics a bit like writing fiction." — Vanity Fair

"Andy Shauf is a master at capturing the tragedy in the minutiae of human interactions." — The FADER

"Even at their most obscure, Shauf’s songs are as alive and full of mystery as the stranger beside you at checkout." — Pitchfork

“It's an album that further solidifies his position as a genre-leading storyteller” - Exclaim!

“A dreamlike serenity is undercut with unsettling desperation in ‘Catch Your Eye’” - New York Times

"[Andy Shauf is] just such a phenomenal storyteller." — NPR Music

“The certified crooner sharpens his pen for another beautiful narrative-based offering” -
RANGE Mag

"Rather than connecting the dots of its characters’ lore, Norm questions the format of the concept album in the first place, presenting pieces of evidence and asking the listener to find the story and draw their own conclusions" — Paste

"Like any good story, Norm rewards multiple listens. Its most indelible moments are enriched with Shauf’s curious details: The Price Is Right soundtracking a divinely hallucinogenic vision, a movie theater as a haven for peeping, and a climactic trip to a Halloween store." — MTV News

. “...each song like a new episode of a TV miniseries thought up by a more subtle Hitchcock, a less gothy Burton, a more disturbed Wes Anderson” - Northern Transmissions

"With his delicate touch and keen eye for detail, Shauf weaves together a rich tapestry of sounds and lyrics to create an atmosphere that is at once dreamy and introspective.” — Glide
