Today, Echoes Of…, the new project fronted by the vocals of Andrew Morrison (The Jerry Cans, Terry Uyarak, Aakuluk Music) is sharing another new track from his upcoming album, Euphemisms, out January 26, 2024 on Aakuluk Records.

Morrison marks recording “Inurulutuinnaujuguk” with qiyuapik (James Ungalaq) as “one of the most special releases of my life. I remember when I first started singing in Inuktitut I faced questions from my community, including from qiyuapik / King James. Questions about who I was, where I was from, who/where is my community, questions about who I was to do what I was doing. ‘Inurulutuinnaujuguk’ means we are only human, we are fallible, we make mistakes, we are flawed, but we are still human. We answer these questions in many ways over our lifetime. Now, qiyuapik and I are great friends, frequent collaborators, and chosen family.

“Theories and ideas of who people are and who they should be, seem to be more prominent now than ever. This song represents the importance of real life community relationships: they are fallible, they are flawed, but we need them to live. Despite what we think we know, there will always be something uniquely beautiful about sitting across from someone very different from you, acknowledging their fallibility, their mistakes, their flaws, ultimately their humanity. There is unique power in those interactions that transcends what we often think we know. Love you qiyuapik and LONG LIVE KING JAMES!”

MORE ABOUT ECHOES OF…
Echoes of... is an approach to creating music that prioritizes collaboration which leads to a mesmerizing auditory journey. The lyrics delve into the heart of life in Nunavut, inviting listeners to explore a day in the life of one of Canada’s most fascinating cities: Iqaluit, Nunavut.

The intricate layers of sound, meticulously crafted by a wide-range of collaborators including James Ungalaq (Northern Haze), Terry Uyarak, Ivaana, Naja P, Jace Lasek (Besnard Lakes), and Maazes, the group draws on a diverse group of skilled instrumentalists and producers to create a sonic landscape that echoes the rugged beauty - and collaborative spirit - of the North. From Nunavut, to Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland), to the Northwest Territories, to Montreal, Echoes of… is a response to increasingly industry-driven musical reality faced in Canada’s north.

Rooted in a deep dedication to collaborative art, the songs by Echoes of… are an exploration of death, loss, love and what life means after it all. Scents of indie rock, folk-pop, and soul-stirring alternative sounds converge to capture the essence of life at the edge of the world.

Echoes of… music is a celebration of the communities, the people, and the stories that live and breathe in modern day Iqaluit. Their songs touch upon the warmth of community, the icy embrace of isolation - whether self-imposed or exerted by outside forces - and the deep connection to nature that shapes daily life.

With a commitment to honouring the past while forging ahead, Echoes of… has become a vessel for both personal introspection and shared empathy. The release of this music is as much a process of grappling with the complexity of human experience while exploring what it means to continue to move through life. Echoes of… hopes to inspire listeners to explore their own creativity, to venture into unknown depths of themselves, while drawing on the resilience and spirit of their communities.

As they step into the public light, Echoes of… seeks to be more than a band; they are the musical representation of life-long relationships between artists in the North. In this way, Echoes of… is a sonic bridge, connecting worlds through melody and emotion, infused with the soul of Nunavut. Echoes of… invites you on an extraordinary expedition into a new plain of heart / music / culture.

Maybe it's the bands count in, maybe it’s the first lyric ‘I can give you something to believe in’ or maybe it's the nostalgic, soulful vocal stacks in the chorus and bridge that makes LOONY’s (Kira Huszar) new single, “Nothing Else Feels The Same” feels like a warm, familiar blanket, safely wrapped around your memories.

“Man, this song has lived so many lives!” LOONY explains. “It’s gone through so many different versions over the last year or so until it finally felt right. Ultimately, it was a live floor studio session that just fit it best, with some of my favourite musicians in Toronto pulling up. This is a song that I’ve always wanted to make - something simple but true, overtop a bed of organic sound.

“Nothing Else Feels The Same” is a true team effort, with over 10 sonic contributors (brass section, primarily) the song contains the most collaborative effort for LOONY yet. Harkening back to LOONY’s most soulful work, the song exists in the same organic musical vein as raw, either side and “Some Kinda Love”. Fans of Kira Huszar’s most traditional work will love the new single for a long time to come.

LOONY has come a long way from skipping musical theatre classes in high school to make mixtapes in her basement: Working with Adam Pondang and Noah ‘40’ Shebib protege Akeel Henry (Ty Dolla $ign, Jeremih, Jazmine Sullivan) on soft thing, LOONY summons musical shades of gospel, jazz, hip hop, and R&B, as on “faceless” and “raw,” which recall early Erykah Badu, The Roots and peak-era D’Angelo in both their enigmatic funkiness and Huszar’s poignant mastery of vocal inflection. At its core, the quarantine-made EP was a diligent exploration of love in many forms, from the euphoric expectation of flirtation to the inextricable hope for a grandparent to stay safe in the midst of a global pandemic. With the release of "Old Friends" we enter into a new chapter of her inextinguishable spirit and verve for finding the beauty in being vulnerable. There's much more on the horizon for LOONY this year.

Producer, songwriter, and creative force Austra (Katie Austra Stelmanis) has added another dimension to her talents as she composes the original score for Canadian documentary feature and docu-series SWAN SONG. Swan Song is Stelmanis’ first film score and sees her taking an entirely different approach to music making. Drawing upon her classical upbringing, the synth-based score was composed using only a Juno-106, a Mellotron and her voice, providing dissonant textures and complementary melodies that interpolate Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.

SWAN SONG is executive produced by Neve Campbell, the all-access project follows ballet legend Karen Kain and a group of dancers as they mount Kain’s farewell production of Swan Lake, and examines the impacts of the culture of ballet on those who live and work inside it.

Speaking about her work, Stelmanis said: “Scoring SWAN SONG has been a dream project. My first ever experience performing was as a kid singing in the orchestra pit for the National Ballet of Canada's Nutcracker sometime in the 90s and my love for Tchaikovsky has sustained ever since. For this project, I was influenced by artists like Vangelis and Oneohtrix Point Never to compose a deep, textured, almost entirely electronic score that traverses the spectacular music of Swan Lake.”

The documentary received its world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival and its UK premiere at the BFI London Film Festival. The project was developed with CBC and in addition to the feature documentary also includes a four-episode docu-series available to stream now on CBC Gem and broadcasting on CBC TV.
