Hovvdy announce their fifth album, Hovvdy, out April 26th on Arts & Crafts. The self-titled, 19 track double album is a statement piece that finds Charlie Martin and Will Taylor at the height of their powers, broadening the scope of their songwriting and adding new wrinkles to their sound, creating something wholly unique and exhilarating. The collection centers Hovvdy’s creative maturation in a true co-production between the band, Andrew Sarlo (Bon Iver, Big Thief), and Bennett Littlejohn (bassist, multi-instrumentalist).

Alongside the album announcement, the band shares the soaring “Forever”, which is accompanied by a music video starring comedians Veronika Slowikowska and Kyle Chase, directed by Michael Rees.

The album announcement comes on the heels of a string of acclaimed singles “Jean”, “Bubba”, and “Portrait” which collectively received praise from Pitchfork, Billboard, Nylon, Stereogum, Paste, UPROXX, Brooklyn Vegan amongst many others.

Hovvdy’s exploratory catalog has earned them status as a quiet favorite of rising stars – seen last year as Zach Bryan expressed admiration for Hovvdy’s album True Love, indie supergroup Boygenius listed it as an inspiration for their record, and beabadoobee named Hovvdy as one of her favorite artists.

Additionally, the band announces new UK and EU spring tour dates. Their tour supporting Cold War Kids kicks off tomorrow in San Francisco. All dates below.

MORE ABOUT HOVVDY:
Hovvdy fits with the comfortable confidence of faded blue jeans. The collection taps familial bonds, tested relationships, and what Will calls “lifelong imprints,” viewed at hindsight’s distance.

“It’s a full circle, because lots of my songs, in adulthood, deal with looking back and seeing your parents as just individuals struggling through life – and trying to have more empathy or understanding. And now Will is diving in from the opposite side as a new parent, grappling with all that,” says Charlie.

“On this album, we tried to really step back and look at: How can we convey our songwriting in a new way?” says Will. “It challenged the songs we brought, and it challenged me to be more vulnerable.”

“We’re trying to stretch out and create a tapestry of everything we can do,” says Charlie. For the expansive double album, the duo went all in with frequent collaborators Andrew Sarlo and Bennett Littlejohn. All four were present for each session in hideaways across the U.S. An unprecedented focus on live takes further peeled the band’s early slowcore layers to show dazzling dynamic range, from the country feel of “Portrait” to the bombastic drums of “Meant.” “We really wanted to encapsulate what it felt like to be in the room when we're playing,” says Will.

WATCH / SHARE “JEAN” HERE
BUY / STREAM “JEAN” HERE

An initial meetup at a log cabin in Black Mountain, North Carolina, revamped Hovvdy’s past lo-fi techniques to playfully catch up with their current craft. Will was surrounded with iPhones and field recorders to capture the southern spin of “Portrait”. Another AirDrop experiment, the vocals of “Angel” find Charlie walking along a babbling creek. A car alarm goes off, just in key, balancing atmospheric clatter and ASMR-level closeness. These intimate moments shift seamlessly into the huge, celebratory statements of character-driven singles like “Jean” and “Forever”, just buzzing in the storytellers’ energy.

Deepening the album’s zoom-in on the years since leaving their home state, further sessions landed at family homes near Dallas. With Will now based in Nashville, and Charlie in St. Louis, Texas remains a meeting point. The felted keys of an upright piano borrowed from Charlie’s mom, a piano teacher herself, anchor throughout. Bennett’s Wurlitzer 200A joins the Auto-Tune and electronic flourishes stamped on past Hovvdy co-productions with Sarlo, including True Love (2021) and billboard for my feelings (2022). Skittering programmed drums keep pace on bright spots like “Bubba” and “Every Exchange”, stringing the album’s hell-bent dash towards deeper interpersonal understanding, a timeless pursuit.

WATCH / SHARE “PORTRAIT” HERE

Tempos wander as the duo explores time – earned, lost, and given to others. While the band’s prior LP, True Love, splashed in new marriages and parenthood, the self-titled album looks at long-term ties twisted and strengthened, sometimes amidst grief and addiction. Charlie narrates sibling support in “Bubba”, where a brother promises, ‘I’ll get a goddamn grip, hold onto it for a while.’ The record also recounts a visit to Mississippi, where Charlie stayed with family during the loss of his grandfather. “‘Make Ya Proud’, I wrote while he was in the hospital, and ‘Song for Pete’, I wrote that the day he passed,” says Charlie.

A breath, three evenings, or six days’ unemployment – so many spans softly cut the album like pencil marks. Father to a three-year-old, Will holds a special interest in bottling time. He strives to savor moments over the giddy breakbeat of “Every Exchange”, while twangy closer “A Little” measures out regrets over love gone ignored. “That's what makes being a parent so difficult – it immediately exposes all the things you haven't dialed in about yourself,” says Will. “Looking at the record, it’s interesting that we both have these unique perspectives on the challenges that come with family.”

Never staying still too long, Hovvdy’s milestone self-titled album easily folds introspection into their big, fearless choruses so cherished by live audiences. Always guided with a gentle hand, the listener lands right there in the room, to witness the spontaneous synchronicity of Charlie and Will’s shared songcraft. Seeing the duo trade off on vocals for the first time since their 2017 debut Taster, single “Bad News” revels in the years of growth. In the Texas-accented thrum, harnessing Hovvdy’s quintessential chug, Will sings: ‘You know time is all I have to give up’.

THE POST-BORDER MULTI-DISCIPLINARY ARTIST COLLECTIVE WILL RELEASE THEIR NEW MIXTAPE, NOIR FEVER PRÉSENTE : MOONSHINE & LA FÉDÉRATION INTERNATIONALE DU BRUIT, ON FEBRUARY 23, 2024

"Moonshine is continuing its quest for world domination one party — or in this case, one album — at a time.  The Federation Internationale de Bruit is an extension of the Moonshine project. The first two singles ("Pain & Pleasure," "Sikoyo") transport you to the club and are imbued with Afro-diasporic sounds from batida to amapiano to Afro-house, thanks to a range of collaborators from across the globe." CBC Music | 2024 Albums We Can't Wait To Hear

"The first release from Aluna's new Noir Fever label, Montreal collective Moonshine's new mixtape promises a litany of gifts from members like Pierre Kwenders, Uproot Andy, Branko and more. The group's first full-length release after their long-running SMS for Location series, Noir Fever Presente: Moonshine & la Fédération Internationale du Bruit is all groove and silky atmosphere." Recently signed to Aluna’s new imprint, Noir Fever, Moonshine is a post-border, multi-disciplinary artist collective creating lunar-based events, music, apparel and film centered on African and Afrodiasporic club culture since 2014. It was co-founded by 2022 Polaris Music Prize winner Pierre Kwenders in Montreal and its members are based in North America, Europe and Africa.

Today, they’re sharing another track from their upcoming mixtape due out on February 23, 2024. “Sakila” features Spilulu and Gafacci, two heavyweights in African electronic music, with Tshiluba vocalist and frequent Spilulu collaborator, Mwamba. “We enjoy creating unlikely blends within the collective,” says Moonshine, “and the idea of having them together on a track was a fantasy we had envisioned for a while now. ‘Sakila’ is clearly an outstanding creation, representing the infinite possibilities of talent on the continent. It's a celebration of African unity through art, something we wholeheartedly advocate.”

MORE ABOUT MOONSHINE
Since its founding in 2014, Moonshine has carved out an enviable niche in Montreal’s nightlife milieu by celebrating a wide range of fledgling local talents, championing Afro-futuristic, bass-heavy, electro-funk sounds, and bringing together communities that wouldn’t necessarily cross paths otherwise. As the name indicates, the lunar-based Moonshine recipe has the collective throw an all-night, sensory-soaked party on the Saturday after every full moon in ever-shifting, unpredictable locations across the city, always strictly disclosed via text messages. With fresh cuts supplied by resident DJs Pierre Kwenders, Vanyfox, San Farafina, and AKantu, visual installations and a slew of live musicians and performers that have included Kaytranada, Dâm-Funk, Le1f, Venus X, Uproot Andy, Bambii and Branko, the parties have become a staple of the after-hours scene, in Canada and abroad, with appearances in NYC, LA, Paris, Brussels, Milan, Lisbon, London, Barcelona and Santiago just to name a few.

“The essence of Moonshine came out of parties we used to throw in our kitchens,” recalls Kwenders. “We felt like we couldn’t go out and find what we had cooked up in that kitchen. It’s one of the reasons we started Moonshine: to share that with more people who felt just like us, and who didn’t have access to such sounds or vibes.” Still going strong nine years on, Moonshine has also begun making use of the aesthetic, network, and structure it established with the parties to promote affiliated artists, expanding its vision from ephemeral moonlit soirées to an expanding catalog of genre-busting music, art, and apparel.

MORE ABOUT LA FÉDÉRATION INTERNATIONALE DU BRUIT
Fédération Internationale du Bruit, “International Federation of Noise” in French, stands as a cutting-edge musical odyssey, conceived by the innovative minds behind Moonshine—an avant-garde, cross-border collective that curates lunar-pii experiences, music, fashion, and cinema rooted in the realms of African and electronic club culture. Born from their dance floor journey, extending from Lisbon to Los Angeles, FIDB emerges as the quintessential cultural amplifier of the club, offering a haven for self-expression and unity.

In this realm, FIDB shines a brilliant spotlight on the boldest and most inventive African and diasporic club and electronic artists of our era. From the pulsating beats of batida and amapiano to the infectious rhythms of jersey, the “International Federation of Noise” aims to be the resounding heartbeat of dance floors—transforming them into sanctuaries of self-expression and peace, from the sun-soaked streets of Los Angeles to the vibrant alleys of Abidjan.

MORE ABOUT SPILULU
Spilulu is originally from Lubumbashi / Katanga, Democratic Republic of Congo. At the start of his musical journey he was mainly recognized as a steady HipHop, R&B and House producer.

In 2009, Mzilikazi Wa Afrika quickly discovered Spilulu (back then named G’Sparks) and signed him to the label Bomba Record. This milestone turned Spilulu into a real “TribalHouse beat Monster”. As a result, Spilulu was featured in Mzee’s album “Tamanini”. Spilulu and Mzee formed the ATeam alongside Jaso Moke, Silly M, Sbonza, Morra Derey, Willie and Godheaven.

After this huge success, Spilulu quickly followed his production with another musical breakthrough named Mukubwa, released by Offering Recordings. Mukubwa has been supported by many living legends such as Louie Vega, Black Coffee and Jerome Sydenham. His ongoing success and international prestige resulted in multiple releases on quality record labels around the globe, including Arrecha, Nulu Records, Bomba and Peng Africa.

MORE ABOUT GAFACCI
Gafacci is a constantly evolving artist. He is visionary, he is versatile, and his productions naturally include an afro twist with strong influences of electronic music. Which you notice whenever you encounter his art.

It’s basically in Gafacci’s DNA since his interest in music was nurtured by his father Sega Gafatchi, a former band member of ‘Juju’ music legend ‘Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey’.

His excitement in producing grew over a decade ago during senior high school where his childhood friend introduced him to the Digital Audio Workstation from Fruity Loops.

This led to experimenting with multiple genres and resulted in the unique sound Gafacci is pushing to Ghanaians and music lovers beyond the motherland today. His knowledge of the global music scene, the ‘twist’ his electronic productions embody, even when collaborating with popular artists, is driven by the influence of his love for ‘Asokpor’ music, which was very famous in Ghana back in the 1990s and early 2000s.

This has earned him great recognition as well as reputation among several excellent artists and resulted in them quickly inviting Gafacci over for production sessions in and outside Africa. He is also the brain behind the ‘Jowaa’ project, where he produced songs like Okwe and Banku Dade which was #1 downloaded bass track on Juno in 2017.

Today, Ghostly Kisses announce their sophomore album Darkroom, out May 17th, and share lead single “On & Off”, a luminous, ethereal pop song woven from the tumultuous fabric of inconsistent and complex love. The track “depicts a complex and tumultuous cyclical relationship where two people constantly break off and get back together,” explains Margaux Sauvé, “The lyrics draw inspiration from a revelation in the ‘Box Of Secrets’ - which was the conceptual inspiration behind our new album.”

Comprised of French-Canadians Margaux Sauvé and Louis-Étienne Santais, Ghostly Kisses has become an international sensation, cultivating a cult overseas audience. Fresh off the success of their debut album, Heaven, Wait, and tours supporting Ry X, Men I Trust, Lord Huron, and Pomme, the band launched their ‘Box of Secrets’ initiative, giving fans an anonymous place to share their most personal thoughts. What they discovered was a global, post-pandemic, postmodern era of pain - an intense and strange loneliness felt around the world. Sauvé and her partner Santais synthesized those missives into the mesmeric Darkroom, a record that wills our inner monologue into view, tears falling on the dancefloor only to find mystic connection in the darkest electronic corners.

The duo’s style of writing reflects their ability to bridge the gap between people who may feel far away. Traditionally, Sauvé and Santais would each set up in a different room, sharing snippets via email and only meeting up to finalize ideas. “Writing separately ensures we’re not influenced by anything else, and we can bring more depth to our process,” Sauvé says. This time, the messages from the ‘Box of Secrets’ provided an unusual baseline for that influence rather than just their own individual experiences, and the result refracts and shimmers kaleidoscopically.

After compiling demos, Ghostly Kisses brought in new collaborators to further bolster their new electronic palette: co-producers George FitzGerald (London Grammar, as well as solo work) and Oli Bayston (Boxed In, Yune Pinku). Longtime engineer (and Santais’ cousin) Alex Ouzilleau further helped shape the work in the studio, and Gabriel Desjardins’ string arrangements add depth and drama to the proceedings. To test their boundaries even further, Ghostly Kisses tested their recordings while on tour, a new step in their process and a portal into connecting more with their music and their fans.

“We heard from a lot of fans from countries where they couldn’t openly love the person they were in love with for political or social reasons,” Sauvé says. “I felt that pain, identified with it in my own way, and knew many others would too.” 2023’s standalone single “Golden Eyes taps into that heartbreak and tragedy in a Björk-esque hypnotic build. Pairing rushing electronic winds with layered vocals panning across the mix, the track pulses to wordless male harmonies reminiscent of Gregorian chants.

Each track of Darkroom’s magnetic run comprises its own world, with Sauvé’s vocals as the radiant arc connecting their orbits, the moments and themes shared by fans finding resonances—the whole Ghostly Kisses universe together even when expressing its loneliness. In moments, Ghostly Kisses offer an awe-inspiring hope for connection, for love, even when it seems impossible. By opening up their music to be the conduit for other people’s stories, they landed up finding their own. And by doing so through the stories of their fans and in new, more kinetic tones, Darkroom should prompt that same hope in many around the world who may otherwise have felt the darkness creeping too far in.

Ghostly Kisses will embark on a world tour this Spring, touring Europe and North America. Pre-sale begins on Jan 31st with the full on-sale on February 2nd. Tickets available HERE.
