Today, HOMESHAKE — the long-running solo project of Toronto-based musician Peter Sagar — announces his new album, CD WALLET, out March 8th via Dine Alone Records, and shares a video for the lead single, “CD Wallet”. Written and recorded over a majority of 2023 at Peter’s home studio in Toronto, CD WALLET is a record that takes place in his hometown of Edmonton, and touches on memories of growing up and the feeling of returning years later. Peter explains how the album was “made in a heavy, straightforward indie rock style to impress my childhood self” and addresses feelings of nostalgia and the trappings one finds themselves in when reflecting on years past.

The video for “CD Wallet” was shot by Jim Larson in Edmonton and features clips of Peter traveling through his childhood home, visiting places he hasn’t seen since moving away over a decade earlier but is returning to now. It’s also an homage to feeling alien in a place you haven’t lived in, but still know where everything is and how to get there.

CD WALLET also emphasizes Peter’s early fascination with guitar music: ‘Wake up, grandma why don’t you put on a little makeup,’ or so he thought the lyrics went to “Chop Suey!” by System of a Down. Sagar was flabbergasted; he sat, mouth open, with a copy of Guitar World magazine open to the tablature of “Chop Suey!” Reading the fine print with a magnifying glass completely stunned, knocked flat onto his back, he learned a guitar can be tuned much lower than he had expected! Drop C in fact. A tuning he uses to this day. An artist and an album were born.

CD WALLET is the sixth HOMESHAKE full-length album and was mastered by Josh Bonati. “Early” from 2019’s Helium was featured in the fifth episode of HBO’s How To with John Wilson in 2020. Following 2021's Under The Weather, HOMESHAKE toured extensively across North America, Europe, and Asia. In 2022, he released Pareidolia Catalog, a six-volume, 126-track instrumental mixtape, accompanied by a collaborative cassette box set and t-shirt with Brain Dead. That same year, HOMESHAKE co-wrote and featured on Eyedress' “Spaghetti,” one of his first collaborations since "Love Is Only a Feeling" with Joey Bada$$ in 2017. More new music is forthcoming in 2024 as well as a North American headline tour to be announced with live band members Greg Napier, Mark Goetz, and Brad Loughead.

“This sixth album moves the needle on again, while never losing sight of his brilliance as a songwriter... Being Somewhere carries a gentle wisdom, filled with kindness... It’s like being given a cozy sonic hug while the world’s storms rage outside.” - MOJO

Full of kindness and empathy, the Vancouver songwriter's latest serves as a gentle reminder to appreciate what you have before it's gone.” - RANGE Magazine

“Being Somewhere showcases some of Mangan’s finest writing couched in some of the most atmospheric arrangements to appear in his catalogue. From the Spartan, piano-driven Just Know It with its subtle harmonies to All Roads driving atmospherics, the production is meticulous.” - Vancouver Sun

“Dan Mangan’s sixth album strikes a fine balance between the quiet intimacy of his best work and Bon Iver’s most fractalized folktronica... The likes of ‘Fire Escape’ and ‘All Roads’ provide warmth and immediacy without disrupting the delicate mood.” - Uncut

This month, Dan Mangan will be supporting his JUNO Award nominated, Polaris Music Prize shortlisted, album Being Somewhere, on his 10-date European headline tour. Today, he’s sharing an acoustic cover of The Lumineers platinum-certified single “Sleep On The Floor”. “When I got word I’d be touring Europe supporting The Lumineers last year in June, I knew I wanted to cover one of their songs,” says Mangan. “They have so many hits but ‘Sleep On The Floor’ was always the one I’d crank when it came on the radio. Wes has a distinctive and strong vocal approach, and I thought it would be interesting to attempt the song with a whisper. Rather than wide open chord changes, a simple piano plodding along keeping pace. The song is about escape, and as somebody who has literally spent a fair amount of time sleeping on floors and couches around the globe, I wanted to explore the sonically comforting elements of my own nostalgia from a life on the road.”

MORE ABOUT BEING SOMEWHERE
Being Somewhere, Mangan’s sixth studio album, cuts incisively but never forgets its underlying thesis: It’s cool to care. Mangan arms the rebels in the crusade for tenderness. The album is a combative plea for mercy from a manic world and its effects on the psyche. Whittling his sharpest pen to date, Being Somewhere is marked by Mangan’s singular wit and a respectful deference to the quagmire of existence.

“I wanted this album to feel like the inside crook of a familiar elbow on the nape of your neck, a comforting embrace” says Mangan, “These songs are tenderhearted and unfurl like an overdue conversation with a dear friend. They essentially lay out where we’re at, how I’m doing, and how I think I can help."

571 emails. 100+ hours on the phone and thousands of text messages. A mere 3 days spent in-person together over two and a half years of long-distance work. Such a displaced recording process might make anyone question the concept of being anywhere at all, let alone being somewhere else.

LISTEN TO DAN MANGAN TALK ABOUT BEING SOMEWHERE IN DEPTH ON CBC q HERE

This is how Dan Mangan and collaborator/producer Drew Brown (Radiohead, Beck) manifested Being Somewhere. All components were recorded in isolation and beamed up to the mothership. No piece of the puzzle ended up as expected, and each moment is the fruition of separate, yet conjoined, rabbit holes.

“The hard part was waiting,” Mangan says of the long-distance process, “sometimes it took six weeks to resolve an issue that could have taken twenty minutes had we been together in a room. But Drew’s dedication and talent cannot be understated, and this music doesn’t sound like anything else I’m hearing these days."

Under the care of Drew Brown’s distinct touch, Being Somewhere forges sonics well beyond the tropes of modern folk music. Helming the project from Chicago, Brown sourced musical contributions from all over North America, the UK and Japan, including work from Joey Waronker (Beck, Atoms for Peace), Jason Falkner (Beck, St. Vincent), Thomas Bartlett (The National, Taylor Swift), Dave Okumu (Arlo Parks, Adele), Mary Lattimore (Kurt Vile, Sharon Van Etten), and Broken Social Scene frontman Kevin Drew.

Bombay Bicycle Club are excited to share their new single, “Willow” featuring Lucy Rose. The track is the latest from the band’s forthcoming Bombay & Friends EP, Fantasies, which will be released on February 23 via Arts & Crafts (Canada). The EP also features collaborations with Rae Morris, Liz Lawrence and Matilda Mann, who features on the track “Fantasneeze” released in January.

“Willow” sees Bombay Bicycle Club reunite with close friend and collaborator, Lucy Rose, for the first time in a decade, when Lucy provided vocals for the band’s #1 album, So Long, See You Tomorrow. The track feels like an elevated, forward-thinking reimagining of the beloved sound of that era, with Lucy’s serene vocals adding subtle but impactful texture to the band’s intricate instrumentation. The track calls out to be performed live, as fans will undoubtedly revel in the nostalgia of the reunion while embracing the bold new direction.

The Fantasies EP will be released digitally on February 23, while the physical release of the EP will be limited to 2,500 10” vinyl which you can get ahold of on the current UK/IE tour, or the band’s website and through a small number of independent record stores. The EP is printed on eco-mix vinyl, a sustainable material which is created by recycling the offcuts from other pressings. It is also packaged in an eco-friendly sleeve and shrinkwrap.

The new tracks are both a celebration of Bombay Bicycle Club’s rich history and a marker of their bold new chapter. They showcase the depth of the band’s creative synergy with their long-term collaborators, Lucy, Rae and Liz, who fans will remember from their work on some of Bombay’s standout tracks, and frequent live cameos. The previous single, “Fantasneeze” is led by new friend and collaborator, Matilda, demonstrating the band’s willingness to embrace the new generation, and to push themselves creatively. Sonically, the EP aligns with the more experimental sound of their recent sixth album, My Big Day, which was met with critical acclaim upon release in late 2023.

The band says: “When we decided to hold ‘Fantasneeze’ back for its own release after the album, we kept working and finished off three other songs in short order. We think of this as a Bombay & Friends release because each song has a good friend of the band singing on it (Lucy Rose, Rae Morris, Liz Lawrence, Matilda Mann). Some are old friends with long-term, close associations to the band (Lucy Rose for instance) while Matilda Mann is a newer collaborator (having contacted Jack to do some co-writing initially a couple years ago). It’s also very much a continuation of My Big Day as it was recorded around the same time and mixed by Dave Fridmann.

The new release follows the band’s sixth album, My Big Day, which debuted at #3 on the UK Official Albums Chart. The album features collaborations with Chaka Khan, Damon Albarn, Jay Som, Nilüfer Yanya and Holly Humberstone, and was produced by frontman Jack Steadman, with contributions from Paul Epworth and Ben Allen. My Big Day has been lauded for its genre-defying experimentation, and celebrated as some of the band’s best work to date, 15 years into their career.

2024 will see Bombay Bicycle Club return to the live circuit with an extensive UK & Ireland headline tour, followed by a North American headline tour, and the biggest headline show of the band’s career at London’s Alexandra Palace Park on 12th July. Festival dates will also be announced in due course.
