Major Love — the collaborative project between Edmonton songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Colleen Brown and Scenic Route to Alaska — are following up their 2018 debut this May, excavating the painful reverberations of pandemic isolation with latest single "Making the Most of It." Today, Major Love are sharing another new track from their upcoming album, Live, Laugh, Major Love. In celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, the Alberta band is sharing “One Woman” today from the new record which arrives May 17, 2024.

On the track, songwriter Colleen Brown says “I wanted to highlight the way women are pitted against one another, and question the idea that there are only so many spots available for women to succeed. This felt especially true for me in my twenties, but as I get older it's more apparent that it's just bogus. We always lose when we fight with each other instead of banding together - when we spend time comparing ourselves and being in a state of jealousy instead of celebrating one another. It chips away at our self esteem when we don’t stand up for our own worth, personally, but also collectively, with and for one another.”

The video that accompanies “One Woman” was filmed on a record-breaking -45.9 degree January day in Edmonton, with a group of very hardy Albertans at the iconic McDougall United Church. "When director Dale Bailey and I started talking about the video for 'One Woman', he showed me this slow-motion clip of his niece Charlotte running, and I agreed that would be an amazing starting point for the video,” says Brown. “She is such a bright and ebullient little person, and I love how unselfconscious she is here in front of the camera. I'm told that when she saw the video she said ‘I can’t believe how cute I am in that video’ and my heart exploded a little."

MORE ABOUT LIVE, LAUGH, MAJOR LOVE
Live, Laugh, Major Love, the long-awaited, Marcus Paquin-produced, semi-eponymous sophomore album from Major Love, comes to us like a cheeky valentine, pairing emotional vulnerability with light-heartedness and the kind of confidence that is synonymous with rock. Earnest without taking themselves too seriously on this record, Major Love’s lead singer-songwriter Colleen Brown playfully scorns romantic love even as she openly longs for it.

“When love relationships go bad, there’s always some part of you that recoils at the next opportunity. You’re like the armadillo. You’re always wearing your armour. And then you attract more armadillos, both of you protecting yourselves, both of you only showing a small part of your tender self. All the while, wishing, at least in part, to relieve yourselves of your shells. To be naked in your need,” says Brown. “The older I get, the more plainly obvious it is to me that in order to survive, we need to learn to love each other, forgive each other, be emotionally vulnerable with one another, look for ways we can collaborate and compromise, and become totally and utterly truthful with ourselves and each other.”

The eleven tracks that comprise Live, Laugh, Major Love showcase Brown’s willingness to do just that, in partnership with her Major Love bandmates: Trevor Mann on guitar and vocals, Shea Connor on drums and vocals, and Murray Wood on bass, who also make up the trio Scenic Route To Alaska

This latest offering, Live, Laugh, Major Love, began with the creation of these two demos; “The More I Know” and “Mountain Standard Time” and became the starting point for the whole record after a serendipitous meeting with Grammy Award-winning producer Marcus Paquin, who would go on to complete the album with the band. “I met Marcus in early 2020, when the two of us were backing up Hawksley Workman and Sarah Slean on tour. I showed him a bunch of my music. He played me the new Weather Station album he had just completed and I was really blown away, obviously, so I really wanted to work together…and we hatched plans to complete the rest of [Major Love’s] album at the National Music Centre in Calgary.”

There were some worldly delays to getting started on that - during which time Brown released two solo albums - Isolation Songs in 2020 and Winging It in 2022 - the latter of which features Paquin as mixing engineer on the track “I Am Leaving (And It's Okay)”

The band finally convened in May 2022 to record Live, Laugh, Major Love, titled in homage to the very cheesy home decor of the rental house they stayed at while recording in Calgary, and in a nod to Brown’s self-help journey that colours a lot of the songwriting. “I'm kind of poking fun at myself while also earnestly repeating my daily affirmations… That's the thread that ties all the songs together - it's me wrestling with my shadows, succumbing at times, trying to pull myself back into the light.’

By the time we hear the album’s closing track “Better Excuse” we do feel as though we are once again in the light. Brown brings us back, full circle, to her romantic optimism, but this time holding on to all the lessons gleaned from the preceding tracks, as she sings about living the life she wants without waiting for love, while also putting forth the offering: “I’ll make the time, I’ve always got space for two.”

Tomorrow, HOMESHAKE — the long-running solo project of Toronto-based musician Peter Sagar — will release his new album, CD Wallet, via Dine Alone Records. Written and recorded over a majority of 2023 at Peter’s home studio in Toronto, the album takes place in his hometown of Edmonton, and touches on memories of growing up and the feeling of returning years later. Peter explains how the album was “made in a heavy, straightforward indie rock style to impress my childhood self” and addresses feelings of nostalgia and the trappings one finds themselves in when reflecting on years past.

CD Wallet also emphasizes Peter’s early fascination with guitar music: “Wake up, grandma why don’t you put on a little makeup,” or so he thought the lyrics went to “Chop Suey!” by System of a Down. Peter was flabbergasted; he sat, mouth open, with a copy of Guitar World magazine open to the tablature of “Chop Suey!” Reading the fine print with a magnifying glass completely stunned, knocked flat onto his back, he learned a guitar can be tuned much lower than he had expected! Drop C in fact. A tuning he uses to this day.

CD Wallet is the sixth HOMESHAKE full-length album and was mastered by Josh Bonati. “Early” from 2019’s Helium was featured in the fifth episode of HBO’s How To with John Wilson in 2020. Following 2021's Under The Weather, HOMESHAKE toured extensively across North America, Europe, and Asia. In 2022, he released Pareidolia Catalog, a six-volume, 126-track instrumental mixtape, accompanied by a collaborative cassette box set and t-shirt with Brain Dead. That same year, HOMESHAKE co-wrote and featured on Eyedress' “Spaghetti,” one of his first collaborations since "Love Is Only a Feeling" with Joey Bada$$ in 2017.

More new music is forthcoming in 2024 and HOMESHAKE will tour across North America this fall in support of it with live band members Greg Napier, Mark Goetz, and Brad Loughead.

Today, the long celebrated, and JUNO Award Nominated group, The Deep Dark Woods, have announced their upcoming album, Broadside Ballads Vol. III. An 8-song LP, the record will lend a familiar melancholic warmth to a collection of traditional folk songs spanning centuries and continents.

Intertwined amongst their albums of original material, Deep Dark Woods has been steadily building up a series of releases called Broadside Ballads, focusing on traditional Irish, English, and Scottish folk songs. It's a fitting tribute to the music that influenced Ryan Boldt’s writing and singing since first forming the band, and like their forebears, Deep Dark Woods aims to take their own experiences of traditional music and create something new and vital. The songs in this collection mine some of the more brutal depths of human experience, touching on broken hearts, love, murder, and the act of leaving. Boldt notes that “there are not too many jolly songs in there”, but the album is not a dour affair, instead benefiting from tasteful, unstated arrangements and an organic, no-frills recording sound. The songs on Vol. III generously display Deep Dark Woods' deep-seated links to the past while still sounding just like themselves.

Today they’re sharing "Spanish is the Loving Tongue", a song based on the poem ‘A Border Affair’ written by Charles Badger Clark in 1907. “Clark was a cowboy poet who lived throughout the American West, and over the years, the song was recorded by many top recording artists, including Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, and Ian and Sylvia,” notes Boldt. “I'm influenced first and foremost by Bob Dylan. He is the greatest vocal phraser in all of folk and rock music, not to mention the finest songwriter of the 20th and 21st centuries. As a live band, we are definitely influenced by the Grateful Dead and the way they took their songs to interesting places each night. I'm personally influenced by the traditional music of Britain, Ireland, Scotland, and, to some degree, America.”

MORE ABOUT THE DEEP DARK WOODS
One might be tempted to think of the Deep Dark Woods as a band steeped in ‘capital-T’ tradition, and that may be true, but now nearly two decades into their life as one of Canada's finest folk-roots ensembles, that tradition is one of their own invention. The voice of founding member Ryan Boldt sits at the forefront of the band, and it doesn't take long to reveal that he is a master of subtlety and shading, working in the lineage of iconic singers like Bob Dylan, Bert Jansch, Rick Danko, and Jason Molina. Boldt, a relentless lifelong listener of music, says “It's all I do. When I'm not playing music, I'm listening to it, trying to find songs that make me feel an aching pain in my chest.” Accordingly, his singing is full of highly emotive nuance and an elegant, relaxed precision that makes it seem downright effortless, a perfect vehicle for the band's particular brand of updated folk music.

Fellow travellers like keyboard whiz Geoff Hilhorst, veteran drummer Mike Silverman, and Evan Cheadle round out the Deep Dark Woods unit, and they are often assisted by like-minded collaborators such as singer-songwriter Ellen Froese, Erik Nielsen, Leon Power, and the acclaimed duo Kacy & Clayton. This crew creates a powerful combination, and has amassed a pile of celebrated albums, EPs, and host of nominations from music awards outfits from across the country. Together they recall classic units like The Band, mid-period Wilco, and American Beauty-era Grateful Dead, but also legendary late '60s UK groups like Fairport Convention, Pentangle, and Steeleye Span.
