"A disc of pure, impalpable beauty, weightless notes and melodies that pierce our hearts.... And the young woman, prey to a vagueness in the soul that she sublimates in a handful of magical songs, to offer us a twilight album, somewhere between Gillian Welch and Laura Veirs."
- Rolling Stone

“[Lapell’s] beautiful fourth album ‘Stolen Time’ is a moving collection of songs inspired by nature, the seasons, and her family’s experience as refugees fleeing eastern Europe during the Holocaust.” - The Guardian

“(‘Stolen Time’) The album’s apparent simplicities belie an emotionally complex set, a sequence that addresses an assortment of difficult subjects, energized throughout by Lapell’s sober yet deeply expressive voice.” - No Depression

“Lapell’s masterful skills on finger-style guitar, harmonica, piano once again return to effortlessly complement her eerily beautiful vocals.” - KUTX (NPR)

“Abigail writes songs that stop you right in your tracks.” - BrooklynVegan

Today, Toronto singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Abigail Lapell shares the second single/video, “Rattlesnake” from her upcoming album Anniversary, set for release on May 10 via Outside Music. “Rattlesnake is an ode to love and superstition," says the award winning songwriter. "The trad-inspired track combines powerhouse vocals and slightly distorted finger-style electric guitar. The serpentine melody unspools around a catchy refrain, doubling vocal lines about archaic love omens and herbalist incantations to timeless yet modern effect."

An evocative collection of original love songs, the album balances upbeat earworms with elegiac ballads, ultimately emerging as an earnest celebration of commitment. Anniversary was recorded at the 200-year-old St. Mark’s Church in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario and was produced with Great Lake Swimmers’ Tony Dekker, who helped shape the project’s spooky, resonant sound while lending his voice to a few spellbinding duets.

Abigail will be embarking on a North American tour this spring, making stops across western Canada in April and in central Canada in May with more dates to be announced soon. Tickets for all shows are available HERE. Abigail is also the featured vocalist on Best Western's new ad campaign "Life's a Trip," featuring an original take on The Band's iconic song "The Weight."

MORE ABOUT ANNIVERSARY
On Anniversary, Abigail Lapell interrogates the romantic ideal of growing old together. ‘Anniversary’ means literally ‘returning yearly’, and the album’s 11 songs track the revolving days, seasons, and years to celebrate and complicate the notion of eternal love. Across the project, Lapell drew inspiration from a series of personal milestones, including turning 40, along with the fifteenth anniversary of her father’s death – and, more recently, several weddings and births in her family. She offers a 40-something vision of love, haunted by the ghosts of departed loved ones, past relationships or even the spectre of faded youth.

Anniversary was fittingly recorded in a historic 200-year-old church adjoining a cemetery, complimenting the project’s resonant and hauntingly intimate theme. Lapell tapped Tony Dekker to co-produce the album, and the two assembled a stellar cast of musicians to round out Lapell’s vocals, piano, harmonica and fingerstyle electric guitar. The ensemble’s sensitive, orchestral country-jazz arrangements reveal the depth of Lapell’s musical palette – making use of the church’s in-house piano, harpsichord and several antique organs.

Across the album, Lapell’s deft lyrics jostle with love song tropes, grappling with love’s finitude and the irony of how codependency and longing are revered in popular music. “I wanted to explore some of the contradictions within the pop culture notion of love,” Lapell says. “These dichotomies of light and dark, love and loss, fleeting and eternal – even in the traditional wedding vows, ‘sickness and health, richer or poorer.’” Ultimately, while deconstructing the myths of romantic love, Anniversary emerges as an earnest celebration of commitment – acknowledging its tragedy and hope, and its power to haunt and console at the same time.

Anniversary comes on the heels of Abigail Lapell’s critically acclaimed 2022 album Stolen Time, and her project Lullabies, released in November of 2023. Over the course of her musical journey, Lapell has garnered three Canadian Folk Music Awards, hit number one on Canadian folk radio and reached a staggering 40 million+ streams on Spotify alone.

Proceeding the start of her North American tour next week, Haley Blais shares her single "Somebody's Son". The new single, which was originally written and recorded during sessions for her recently released sophomore album Wisecrack, is grounded with acoustic guitar strums layered with atmospheric vocals from Haley.

Opening up about the meaning of the song, Haley shares, "This is me talking directly to my brother; one family ending, and another beginning. A conversation with him spanning years.“

Next Thursday, Haley Blais will begin her headline North American tour to celebrate her sophomore album Wisecrack. The tour will make stops in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa and more with support from Grace Gardner, Charlie Houston, and Gabrielle Shonk on select dates. Full tour routing below and tickets available HERE.

Last September, Haley released her sophomore album Wisecrack, which is her deepest and most comprehensive work to date. For Haley, the purpose of looking backwards was never just for nostalgia’s sake, but to come to terms with the past in an effort to push herself forward. Within the creases of Wisecrack, Haley dives into the existential, everyday worries we all contain but rarely share and lays them bare with grace and humor. Wisecrack includes "The Cabin," which arrived with a video directed by Zia Kalyan, "Baby Teeth," which was paired with a video directed by Vancouver VFX artist Shea Oracheski, along with the songs "Matchmaker," "Coolest fucking bitch in town" and "Survivor's Guilt."

NORTH AMERICAN TOUR BEGINS MARCH 22, INCLUDING DATES WITH JIM WHITE & MARISA ANDERSON DUO, AND KURT VILE

"As a vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter, she’s a masterful musical interpreter, transforming long-past art into present-tense vision… [Her music is] plainly open about its themes and sources yet reaching depths far beyond the sum of her inspirations." - Pitchfork

"The magic of Myriam Gendron is transformation. The Québécois singer-guitarist takes traditional songs in French and English and sets them out of time, placing her sepia-toned voice against the grain of current aches." - NPR Music

"masterpiece... a contemporary folk album of the highest tier." - The Vinyl District

Acclaimed guitarist/singer/songwriter Myriam Gendron has announced her new album Mayday, out May 10th on Chivi Chivi, Thrill Jockey & Feeding Tube Records. Acclaimed guitarist/singer/songwriter Myriam Gendron has announced her new album Mayday, out May 10 on Chivi Chivi in Canada and Thrill Jockey & Feeding Tube Records elsewhere. Along with the album's announcement, Gendron has shared first single "Long Way Home," a spirited, bounding crusade informed as much by folk traditions as it is pop forms, buoyed by the deft playing of fellow guitarist Marisa Anderson and drummer Jim White (Dirty Three).

"This was one of the first songs I wrote for the album,” explains Gendron. I wanted to write a song with verses and a chorus, which was a bit of a challenge for me, as I’m more used to ballads without a chorus. I also wanted to continue the work I’d started on Ma délire, where I’d begun to experiment with songwriting inspired by tradition. But the aim of such a process is to go beyond a mere exercise in quotations. The result has to be internally coherent and reflect emotion in a way that’s fair and true. And it has to be a pleasant song to listen to, even for those who don’t know my sources of inspiration. I feel I’ve met that challenge with "Long Way Home", which is in a way my first pop song, thanks to the contributions of Cédric Dind-Lavoie, Jim White and Marisa Anderson. We made jokes while recording it in the studio. Jim isn’t used to playing in this style, and it made him smile a lot. He said he felt like Mick Fleetwood! This song opens the album with the idea of a symbolic shipwreck ("when my great ship went down", a reference to the popular song "It Was Sad When That Great Ship Went Down" about the sinking of the Titanic) and the retreat that follows. The words of the refrain "Mother make my bed" are also very old, and are a recurring motif in traditional songs about returning home (sometimes to die)."

Mayday presents an even more syncretic fusion of the elements Myriam uses to create her sound on her acclaimed previous releases Not So Deep As A Well (2014) and Ma délire –Songs of love, lost & found (2021). Most of the songs are original, sung in both English and French, and they blend traditional and avant elements with abandon. She is often accompanied on this album by the guitarist Marisa Anderson and drummer Jim White, whose work provides a quietly aggressive sort of free-rock base. Additional players this time include Montreal bassist Cédric Dind-Lavoie (a fellow fan of trad/avant dynamism), Bill Nace (Body/Head) and saxophonist Zoh Amba (whose horn actually gets the final “word”). Mayday is a thoroughly thrilling effort that manages to create new vistas of sound while maintaining a feel that is both intimate and familiar.

Myriam Gendron will be touring extensively in support of Mayday in 2024, kicking off with Big Ears Festival and a North American tour this spring where Gendron will be joined by Jim White and Marisa Anderson's duo on select dates, and Canadian shows with Kurt Vile & the Violators, with more dates to be announced.
