"Between its instrumental interplay and Gendron's singing and structural vision, it's a deep and gorgeous classic that moves her into the pantheon of our greatest living songwriters." - Exclaim!

“As a vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter, she’s a masterful musical interpreter, transforming long-past art into present-tense vision… [Her music is] plainly open about its themes and sources yet reaching depths far beyond the sum of her inspirations.” - Pitchfork

“With her deep knowledge of history and literature, combined with her vulnerable, evocative lyrics, Myriam Gendron has the power to open emotional portals. There is something intangible about the sound of her voice, the phrasing of her words, and the chords she chooses that unlocks something within me, like few other musicians can.” - Stereogum

“Her voice is a curious thing, capable of moving from dark siltiness to startling clarity across a single line, giving the impression of something forever being heaved up from depth to light. Her musical approach is a similar dance of structure and dissemblage… It is a stunning record, encompassing the loss of her mother amid a broader and more intangible sense of grief that she struggles now to articulate.”  - Uncut

“Two years after the critical and international success of the magnificent Ma Délire - Songs of love, lost and found, the musician does not fade in the background anymore : for the first time in her career, she knows she's expected. ‘Yes... and I find it difficult to deal with,’ she concedes before recounting the delicate gestation of this new masterpiece that speaks of love, hope and fatality.”  - Le Devoir

Montréal-based singer-songwriter Myriam Gendron presents her third album, titled Mayday. Following the 2021 acclaimed double LP Ma délire - Songs of love, lost & found, the 10 tracks-long album is co-produced by Benoît Chaput and Myriam herself and benefits from a joint effort by Thrill Jockey, Feeding Tube and Chivi Chivi.

“Mayday was born of a feeling of complete disorientation following the loss of loved ones and the collapse of a set of certainties,” says Gendron. “At first, there's a shipwreck and a loss of bearings. Then, a deep sadness to explore. But despite everything, there's also spring, the light of May, life continuing to beat on. We have to find the strength within ourselves to sing lullabies through the storms.”

Mayday’s release follows the previous unveiling of two songs: English country-folk ballad “Long Way Home”, and French cinematic lament “Terres brûlées”. These singles have caught the attention of many renowned media, in Canada and internationally: Stereogum (Song of the Week), Uncut, Brooklyn Vegan, Exclaim! and La Presse, amongst others. Every song of the album is accompanied by a visualizer shot by Charles-André Coderre on 16mm film.

Mayday is in line with Ma délire in the way it showcases the artist’s love for traditional folk music. Here again, she draws inspiration from Appalachian folk (“Lully Lullay”) and French-Canadian sea shanties (“La belle Françoise [pour Sylvie]”.) But the album is just as much an endorsement of Gendron’s talent as a singer-songwriter, as her bold poetic voice and musical arrangements shine on tracks such as rock and jazz infused closer “Berceuse” and heartwarming instrumental interlude “La Luz”. On Mayday, she sings in both English and French, paying homage to various traditions across North America. Mayday benefits from precious contributions by eminent artists Marisa Anderson, Jim White (Dirty Three), Cédric Dind-Lavoie, Bill Nace and Zoh Amba.

Having just completed the first leg of her North American tour, Myriam will hit back the road, travelling in Canada and the United States alongside duo Jim White & Marisa Anderson. Mayday’s Montréal launch will take place at Cabaret Lion d’Or on May 18. She will also be opening for Kurt Vile & the Violators, on June 28 (Toronto) and June 29 (Montréal, Jazz Fest).

MORE ABOUT MYRIAM GENDRON
Mayday is the third LP by Montréal-based artist, Myriam Gendron. It follows her earlier, critically acclaimed albums, Not So Deep As A Well (2014) and Ma délire – Songs of love, lost & found (2021). Prior to her debut album, Myriam's primary musical focus was busking in Paris Metro stations, performing the songs of Leonard Cohen and others, accompanying herself on guitar.

Through her day job, working at a Montréal bookstore, Myriam discovered the poems of American writer, Dorothy Parker, who was better known for her cutting wit than her verse. Inspired by Parker's words, Myriam wrote music to accompany a suite of them, then recorded the results in her bedroom. These recordings were issued as her debut LP, and continue to delight listeners who discover them, with their freshness, clarity and humor. After a brief hiatus, Myriam began exploring the complex folk traditions of Quebec (and beyond), recording the 2LP, Ma délire, which combines traditional and original songs (largely in French) with arrangements that make space for avant-garde musical interludes by such folks as guitarist Bill Nace (Body/Head) and renowned jazz percussionist Chris Corsano. Mayday is an even more syncretic fusion of these elements. Most of the songs are original, in both English and French, and blend traditional and avant elements with abandon. Additional players this time include Montréal bassist Cédric Dind-Lavoie (a fellow fan of trad/avant dynamism), Bill Nace and saxophonist Zoh Amba (whose horn actually gets the final “word”). Mayday is a thoroughly thrilling effort that manages to create new vistas of sound while maintaining a feel that is both intimate and familiar. Beautiful work.

RIVER TIBER PARTNERS WITH JUSTIN NOZUKA FOR TWO NEW TRACKS, “TELL HER” + “STRANGER”

Photo Credit : Maritza Campos // DOWNLOAD HIGH-RES

Today, River Tiber (Tommy Paxton-Beesley) and Justin Nozuka have partnered together to share two new tracks, “Tell Her” and “Stranger”, however the duo’s partnership is nothing new. “I’ve known Tommy since I was a teenager, I remember the first time we hung out we spent hours geeking over Jeff Buckley,” says Nozuka. “He taught me how to use Logic and was my main support when I was learning how to produce. I've always admired his artistry and sensibility, it's way past due for us to have music out together and just beyond proud of these songs.”

“Justin is one of my biggest influences vocally,” adds River Tiber. “One of my first experiences in music was playing guitar in his live band. Touring together and hearing him sing every night made a deep impression on me. In the years since, I think we have developed an unspoken understanding that makes creating and collaborating feel light.”

The new single, “Tell Her”, was actually produced “years ago” according to River Tiber. “I recorded the sounds of late summer in Toronto and incorporated them into the production; cicadas singing, a rainstorm, jets overhead from the air show. It reminds me of a simpler time in the city. It was a difficult record to finish and it sat in the vault for a while, but we decided we wanted to finally share it with the world.”

The single’s B-Side, “Stranger” is a new track that “felt pretty effortless to create,” says River Tiber. “To me, it’s about how people disperse and can drift away as time goes on. Being together gets more complicated.”

MORE ABOUT JUSTIN NOZUKA
Born in NYC and raised in Toronto amongst a family of artists, Justin Nozuka is carving out his own path in alternative music.

His journey towards global recognition began with the release of acclaimed albums like the gold-certified "Holly" and "You I Wind Land and Sea," which soared to the #1 spot on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart. Garnering JUNO Award nominations for Breakthrough Artist of the Year and Best Alternative Album, his ascent was swift, marked by extensive world tours, prestigious festival appearances, and performances on iconic TV shows such as The Late Show with David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel Live.

After taking a moment to recalibrate, Justin ultimately adopted a more organic approach to his craft, allowing his songwriting, sensitivity, and emotional depth to transcend conventional genres. This evolution sparked collaborations with artists like Mahalia, River Tiber, Zacari, and Russ, adding layers of R&B influence to his distinct acoustic sound.

With his sixth studio album on the horizon, Justin stands confidently at the helm of his creative process, embracing his independence and diverse, alternative sound. With a clear vision and clarity of purpose, he continues to craft soul-stirring melodies that resonate deeply with audiences around the globe.

MORE ABOUT RIVER TIBER
River Tiber is a Grammy award-winning singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist who was born and grew up in downtown Toronto. He emerged from the city’s music scene with 2016’s Indigo, an imaginatively experimental alternative R&B album. That debut was highly influential and heavily sampled, with River’s textured atmospherics and singular vocal layers being flipped into songs by artists such as Drake (‘No Tellin’), SZA (‘Broken Clocks’), Mac Miller (‘ROS’), and many more. His latest album Dreaming Eyes has already proved to be no different, with Kendrick Lamar sampling lead single ‘Hypnotized’ on his Grammy-winning opus Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers (‘Savior’).

Dreaming Eyes marks River’s first album in 6 years. He has been a prolific producer and collaborator, embedded in a circle of Canadian musicians including Daniel Caesar, Kaytranada, BADBADNOTGOOD, Charlotte Day Wilson, Frank Dukes, Jazz Cartier, Justin Nozuka, and Sean Leon. His unique voice and instrumentation have been tapped in productions for a spectrum of artists including Travis Scott, James Blake, Giveon, Post Malone, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Freddie Gibbs, Camila Cabello, Kodak Black, Jhene Aiko, Ty Dolla $ign, Usher, and more. But this collection of songs was the result of the solitude and isolation of the pandemic. The album was written and produced almost entirely solo. Every instrument was recorded by River himself (except for a couple of searing guitar parts from long-time collaborator John Mavro). The lyrics are prismatic and timeless, examining and shedding light on contemporary life from many angles. Psychedelic rock, cosmic jazz orchestration, and bittersweet soul weave a journey that bends and constantly surprises.

"(‘Stolen Time’) A disc of pure, impalpable beauty, weightless notes and melodies that pierce our hearts.... And the young woman, prey to a vagueness in the soul that she sublimates in a handful of magical songs, to offer us a twilight album, somewhere between Gillian Welch and Laura Veirs." - Rolling Stone

“[Lapell’s] beautiful fourth album ‘Stolen Time’ is a moving collection of songs inspired by nature, the seasons, and her family’s experience as refugees fleeing eastern Europe during the Holocaust.” - The Guardian

“(‘Stolen Time’) The album’s apparent simplicities belie an emotionally complex set, a sequence that addresses an assortment of difficult subjects, energized throughout by Lapell’s sober yet deeply expressive voice.” - No Depression

“Lapell’s masterful skills on finger-style guitar, harmonica, piano once again return to effortlessly complement her eerily beautiful vocals.” - KUTX (NPR)

"Incredible music from Toronto" - Folk Alley

"The standout track 'Rattlesnake' begins with a slowly ramping up guitar that is sparse and haunting yet upbeat. Lapell lays down vocals that feel rooted and soulful with an element of blues running through her unique style of folk-noir." - Glide Magazine

This Friday, Toronto singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Abigail Lapell will release her highly anticipated new album Anniversary via Outside Music. Recorded in a 200-year-old church in Ontario, the project is an evocative collection of original love songs that balances buoyant earworms and poignant ballads, ultimately emerging as an earnest celebration of commitment.

Ahead of the release, today Abigail revealed a final glimpse into the project with the video for “Flowers In My Hair”. The track features acclaimed indie-folk band Great Lake Swimmers’ frontman Tony Dekker and is a sunny acapella singalong that acts as an ode to summertime. Lapell expands, "'Flowers In My Hair' is a summery song about skinny dipping and lying around sunbathing, covered in flowers, and feeling carefree and in love – or, at least, in love enough for the moment." Recorded live-off-the-floor in a 200-year-old church, the earworm captures joyful, off-the-cuff harmonies that float across claps and layered stomps, infused with the natural reverb of the unique recording space.

MORE ABOUT ANNIVERSARY
On Anniversary, Abigail Lapell interrogates the romantic ideal of growing old together. ‘Anniversary’ means literally ‘returning yearly’, and the album’s 11 songs track the revolving days, seasons, and years to celebrate and complicate the notion of eternal love. Across the project, Lapell drew inspiration from a series of personal milestones, including turning 40, along with the fifteenth anniversary of her father’s death – and, more recently, several weddings and births in her family. She offers a 40-something vision of love, haunted by the ghosts of departed loved ones, past relationships or even the spectre of faded youth.

Anniversary was fittingly recorded in a historic 200-year-old church adjoining a cemetery, complimenting the project’s resonant and hauntingly intimate theme. Lapell tapped Tony Dekker to co-produce the album, and the two assembled a stellar cast of musicians to round out Lapell’s vocals, piano, harmonica and fingerstyle electric guitar. The ensemble’s sensitive, orchestral country-jazz arrangements reveal the depth of Lapell’s musical palette – making use of the church’s in-house piano, harpsichord and several antique organs.

Across the album, Lapell’s deft lyrics jostle with love song tropes, grappling with love’s finitude and the irony of how codependency and longing are revered in popular music. “I wanted to explore some of the contradictions within the pop culture notion of love,” Lapell says. “These dichotomies of light and dark, love and loss, fleeting and eternal – even in the traditional wedding vows, ‘sickness and health, richer or poorer.’” Ultimately, while deconstructing the myths of romantic love, Anniversary emerges as an earnest celebration of commitment – acknowledging its tragedy and hope, and its power to haunt and console at the same time.

Anniversary comes on the heels of Abigail Lapell’s critically acclaimed 2022 album Stolen Time, and her project Lullabies, released in November of 2023. Over the course of her musical journey, Lapell has garnered three Canadian Folk Music Awards, hit number one on Canadian folk radio and reached a staggering 40 million+ streams on Spotify alone.
