Today, Canadian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Leif Vollebekk announces his brand-new album, Revelation, to be released on September 27 on Secret City Records, with new single “Moondog”. The new release will be available in digital, CD and LP formats, and is his third release on the Montreal-based label.

The 11 tracks on Vollebekk’s Revelation combine narrative lyrics and many one-take lead vocal performances with cinematic arrangements, gorgeous sonics, well-placed space and lush orchestration. Vollebekk’s Revelation songwriting process was inspired by an exploration that began with Carl Jung’s I Ching and continued into the science of alchemy and the mystery of the divine. The final result is at once organic, earthy and celestial, with themes of nature -- water, astral constellations, mortality – woven into a meditation on living in an ever-changing present laced with existential doubt, the search for a higher power.

“Moondog”, the first single, offers firm proof of this juxtaposition with its “meditation on love,” fateful meetings, family, and magic, with a lyrical nod to “tessellation” (a pattern of geographic shapes covering a surface). “Was that the wind howling through the trees/Or was that you/Calling to me?” The video accompanying the song was directed by longtime collaborator Kaveh Nabatian and was filmed in Norway.

MORE ABOUT REVELATION
“During the pandemic lockdown, I was drawn to biographies and books about science. I guess I was looking for something to ground me,” said Vollebekk. “When I read Carl Jung’s ‘Dreams, Memories, Reflections,’ I was taken aback that he wrote so freely of having premonitions in his dreams and by his fascination with alchemy. When I read about Isaac Newton’s life, I discovered that this man of science secretly practiced alchemy in his own laboratory and looked for signs of the apocalypse. The more I read, the more otherworldly all these great scientists were. Dmitri Mendeleev said his breakthrough for the arrangement of the elements came to him in a dream. Is it really that different from Paul McCartney hearing ‘Yesterday’ in a dream?"

Recorded at both Sunset Sound and Dreamland in Woodstock, New York, Revelation is both spiritual and down-to-earth, from the heavens above to the oceans below, a product of more than two years in isolation, picking up a partner and a family along the way, using the time to take astronomy, tend to his garden, build furniture, study alchemy, and ponder his long-term future. “It was like being able to retire in my 30s while I could still enjoy it,” Leif says. The album was mixed by Tchad Blake (Tom Waits, Arctic Monkeys, Tracy Chapman) and mastered by Greg Calbi.

An artist’s artist with many colleagues as admirers, Vollebekk – who self-produced and played piano, guitar, bass, B3 organ, harmonica, accordion and Moog synthesizer on Revelation – compiled an impressive supporting cast that speaks to the caliber of musicianship and feel of the recordings, including legendary drummer Jim Keltner, notable steel guitarist Cindy Cashdollar (Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and Rod Stewart), and revered bassist Shahzad Ismaily. His other album collaborators included artists Angie McMahon and Anaïs Mitchell on background vocals.

HOMESHAKE — the long-running solo project of Toronto-based musician Peter Sagar — shares the new single/video, “Simple”, from his second album of 2024, Horsie, out June 28th via Dine Alone Records. It’s a track about what happens when you begin to buckle under life’s pressures and slip into a depressive state, and turn to self-medication to ease the stress. The video for “Simple”, directed by Jim Larson, follows lead single, “Nothing 2 See”, and is the second part of a trilogy of videos for Horsie, with Peter changing form as he steals a car in a panic, and is pursued by a mysterious man riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

The video explores themes of paranoia and anxiety, and how close they can be looming at any given time. “Amazing cameos from dear friends, I appreciate them very much,” says Peter. “The sequel to the previous video, Jim did such a good job revealing it. Anxiety and paranoia are close friends of mine.”

MORE ABOUT HOMESHAKE
HOMESHAKE is an expression of adjustment and contortion within the world as Peter experiences it and the sounds he wants to hear in it. Hallucinatory and heartbreaking in its cries for connection, Peter’s sound is often imitated but has proven to be entirely his own; textural and profound, uniquely honoring his diverse influences but adrift within its own transportive imagination. Horsie employs various textures influenced by artists like Four Tet and My Bloody Valentine, the rhythmic forms of D’Angelo and Sade, and moments of ambient Americana found in the works of Ry Cooder.

Peter approaches every album with the same frame of mind, composing purely for the joy of the moment without consideration to potential commercial reception. Now on his seventh album, a trip through the Homeshake catalog is one of evolution, reflection, and self-criticism, alongside self-love, a clear-eyed realism about the cruelties of the world and a longing for the gentler place it could be.

GEOFFROY SHARES SECOND SINGLE / VIDEO, “HOTEL BED”, FROM UPCOMING LP

Photo Credit : Alex Dozois // DOWNLOAD HIGH-RES

Today, Montreal artist Geoffroy is sharing the second single from his upcoming LP, Good Boy. "Hotel Bed" is a romantic, colourful, and celebratory song that highlights the international sounds featured throughout his fourth full-length record.

Once again, the perpetual saga of relationships unfolds," Geoffroy explains. "'Hotel Bed' follows the story of a girl who, tired of her new partner's indecision and conflicting messages, reaches her breaking point."

"I began crafting it on the piano at my cottage and through numerous studio sessions, it gradually transformed into what you hear today," he adds. "The music video features ‘Remesha Drums’, a group of drummers originally from Burundi. The drums they play on are called “Ingoma” and are made out of a specific type of wood that can only be found there."

MORE ABOUT GEOFFROY + GOOD BOY
Geoffroy is an essential and emerging voice in Canadian music. Now three LPs into a career that has solidified him as one of Quebec’s best artists, the Montreal-born songwriter and producer takes the next step internationally with the release of fourth full-length Good Boy.

Almost 10 years removed from his first release, this project was sparked with the intention of creating Geoffroy’s most authentic work to date, blending organic instrumentation and electronic elements into a bright and rich album filled with diverse sounds, a collection of songs that moves beyond the brooding depth that has defined recent works.

Each past album that Geoffroy has released reflected a different tone and period in the artist’s life and his evolution and experimentation with different sonic palettes. In this case, Good Boy sees Geoffroy look back and collaborate with longtime production partners Clément Leduc and Gabriel Gagnon, but also incorporate a diverse collection of new background musicians and singers that brings the album to life in vibrant colour.

That diversity was driven by a gradual shift in Geoffroy’s influences, having spent recent years immersing himself in the worlds of cumbiamusic and a range of other latin and african rhythmic styles, that melded with his traditional singer-songwriter form to create something that feels truly international.

In fact the record’s narrative was inspired by a trip to Mexico where he befriended - and ultimately adopted - a shelter dog named Papi, bringing him from the streets of Mexico City to Montreal. Papi serves as the mascot for the LP, but more importantly acts as an overarching metaphor for being lost, but ultimately found.

Asked to reflect on the change in perspective that accompanied the transition from his previous musical era into this one, Geoffroy spoke to the clarity he experienced in terms of his own agenda in the creation of music.

Live Slow Die Wise had a slower pace and I was eager to step away from the nostalgia and melancholy I had visited and analyzed plenty in the past,” Geoffroy reflects. “I did what felt natural, a feel-good album (I think) that shed the weight of the other ones. I feel I’m getting closer to the sound I’m looking for, though I might be chasing something that’s faster than me.”
