SKINNY DYCK SHARES NEW SINGLE “EASYGOING” AND ANNOUNCES TOUR DATES

Today, Skinny Dyck - the playful performing artistic alias of Western Canadian artist Ryan Dyck - is following up recent single “Can’t Change The Colour Of Your Eyes” with another new track. “Easygoing” is a “look in the mirror,” claims Dyck. “Sometimes I can see past my own reflection and into the childhood moments that made me who I am. Most other times I see my own face and before I start to cry I remind myself that life is beautiful and easy. My Dad is always on about the Sweetgrass Hills located just south of us in northern Montana. Hope to do a hike with him someday soon.”

MORE ABOUT SKINNY DYCK
Resist the urge to laugh at Skinny Dyck - the playful performing artistic alias of Western Canadian artist Ryan Dyck (or don’t, that’s kind of the idea). If you do elect to chew down on the name, it’s likely that a familiar flavour profile comes about - which is to be expected given the traditional country associations. What began as a side project to his steel guitar focused pursuits emerged as a principal form of expression, beginning with 2020’s Get to Know Lonesome LP, followed by the Palace Waiting EP in 2022. But inherent in the songwriting and production choices has always been a thread of something different. A careless recording mistake left unedited, a flippant lyrical bluff, or a single mic on the drums instead of 10 - “It reeks of creativity and originality not found in average country songs” (Americana Highways) and serves to set Skinny apart from the crowd.

Marinating in the success of his off-brand twang is a new batch of material that sees the celebrated songwriter stepping further away from a genre defined by its traditions. It’s a sound underwritten by the richness of time that’s been unmoored by the wandering eye of creative expression. A sort of Mac Demarco meets Merle Haggard mishmash, like a second mezcal negroni before dinner.

Following successful Canadian and European tours in 2023, with showcases at Reeperbahn (Hamburg) and Come Together (Toronto) Skinny sets his sights on a new album in 2024.

Tomorrow, Montreal artist Geoffroy will release his fourth studio album, Good Boy, however today he’s sharing the new video for “Early Morning Sun”, a track which he considers to be the “the heart of the album. It recounts the trip I took to Mexico City in April of 2022, where an unexpected encounter with a 2-year-old dog named Papi completely changed my life,” he explains.

“While staying in Roma Norte, just minutes away from Parque Mexico, I stumbled upon a weekly pet adoption event. Amongst the litters of puppies, I saw Papi, sitting there, waiting, looking lonely. I tried taking him for a walk but he didn’t want to steer away from the shelter lady. I didn’t force anything, took a few pictures and left. No other dog there caught my attention or interest. But this one invaded my thoughts for the next few days, to the point where I had a hard time fully enjoying my vacation. I kept thinking about whether or not I should take him home with me. I’ve always wanted a dog...but was I ready? Would I give him a better life? Fuck. Maybe.

The day before my return, literally, I texted the lady from the shelter and told her I would take him, if she could bring him to the airport and meet me there before my flight. She was to bring the dog with a travel cage, a leash and a little homemade jacket. I had pulled the trigger but still a bit on the fence about the whole thing. But I followed intuition. I got to the airport and waited for them to arrive. They got there late. Because of that, I missed my flight home by a few minutes. But as fate would have it, a kind manager at AeroMexico understood our story and graciously got me a new flight without charge. My new amigo flew in his cage, checked-in underneath me. I found him petrified when I got my luggage at YUL. We went straight from the airport to my cottage and slowly got to know each other. Fast forward two years, and he's not just a pet – he's my sidekick, my best pal, and makes me smile every day. Adopting him was hands down one of the best choices I ever made.”

Geoffroy is also announcing Canadian tour dates today that include performances across Quebec as well as engagements in B.C, Alberta, and Toronto. All dates are listed below.

MORE ABOUT GEOFFROY + GOOD BOY
Geoffroy is an essential and emerging voice in Canadian music. Now three LPs into a career that has solidified him as one of Quebec’s best artists, the Montreal-born songwriter and producer takes the next step internationally with the release of fourth full-length Good Boy.

Almost 10 years removed from his first release, this project was sparked with the intention of creating Geoffroy’s most authentic work to date, blending organic instrumentation and electronic elements into a bright and rich album filled with diverse sounds, a collection of songs that moves beyond the brooding depth that has defined recent works.

Each past album that Geoffroy has released reflected a different tone and period in the artist’s life and his evolution and experimentation with different sonic palettes. In this case, Good Boy sees Geoffroy look back and collaborate with longtime production partners Clément Leduc and Gabriel Gagnon, but also incorporate a diverse collection of new background musicians and singers that brings the album to life in vibrant colour.

That diversity was driven by a gradual shift in Geoffroy’s influences, having spent recent years immersing himself in the worlds of cumbiamusic and a range of other latin and african rhythmic styles, that melded with his traditional singer-songwriter form to create something that feels truly international.

In fact the record’s narrative was inspired by a trip to Mexico where he befriended - and ultimately adopted - a shelter dog named Papi, bringing him from the streets of Mexico City to Montreal. Papi serves as the mascot for the LP, but more importantly acts as an overarching metaphor for being lost, but ultimately found.

Asked to reflect on the change in perspective that accompanied the transition from his previous musical era into this one, Geoffroy spoke to the clarity he experienced in terms of his own agenda in the creation of music.

Live Slow Die Wise had a slower pace and I was eager to step away from the nostalgia and melancholy I had visited and analyzed plenty in the past,” Geoffroy reflects. “I did what felt natural, a feel-good album (I think) that shed the weight of the other ones. I feel I’m getting closer to the sound I’m looking for, though I might be chasing something that’s faster than me.”

After a long wait, KROY, the stage name of pluridisciplinary artist Camille Poliquin (Milk & Bone), returns to unveil the fruits of her lyrical and musical explorations in a new album, MILITIA, set for release on August 16, 2024. The musician’s new work features dark pop melodies inspired by love, sadness and depression.

The body of work is as old as it is new, some songs rooted in late teen years, others from the dawn of one’s 30s. Every single one of them drenched in sadness and despair, from different perspectives of mania and depression. A portrait of a girl’s evolution through her twenties, gathering confidence, losing it entirely, testing out different personalities, just to come back closer to who she really is. In this case, a sad sad girl who loves alot and may be obsessed with the idea of death and cars and robots.

Today, KROY is sharing the new single, “SALTWATER”, which arrives complete with a video from director Gerardo Alcaine, who also directed the video for “JOLIGENTIL”. Of the track, Poliquin says, "releasing this song is so special to me because I've been working on it for quite a while. I had written it for someone else at first, but then got too attached and decided to keep it for myself."

"’SALTWATER’ is a song about leaving them behind and moving forward with your battle scars. It's a song about meeting someone so special you give everything you are to them, and are convinced you've found the person for you. Only to be completely deceived and betrayed. Blood, sweat, tears. It's just saltwater."

"For this song we really wanted to mix both the vulnerable and the violent. The verses are very closed mic'd and soft, and the choruses are sung as a group, and with a lot more power. Max Ant who produced the song has also worked with artists like DJ Snake, Brodinski, Ramengvrl and we were dying to work on something that had an instrumental bridge that just takes you somewhere completely different."

Director Gerardo Alcaine explains, for the video, “Camille reached out and said ‘I want three IV bags.’ She then went on to explain that these three bags would represent the ‘blood, sweat, tears’ in the lyrics. ‘SALTWATER’ immediately became an extension of the universe we created for ‘JOLIGENTIL’. We had already set a tone, and we decided to explore it further. Yes, it is way more simple than what we had done previously, but it is still charged with energy and emotion, which we explored through moodier lighting and a constant, hypnotizing camera movement.”

MORE ABOUT KROY
Her deeply personal approach to music and her bold pop explorations have seen her accumulate millions of plays on streaming platforms. KROY has been described as a visionary artist and Montreal’s queen of electropop and is known for her soaring voice, synth-pop melodies and brooding lyrics.

In the fall of 2016, KROY released her debut solo album SCAVENGER. With hypnotic electro rhythms  and lyrics dominated by stories of impossible love, the album draws inspiration from spacey trip-hop  (Goldfrapp, Portishead) and inventive modern pop (Vampire Weekend, Youth Lagoon). SCAVENGER’s whirlwind of synths has garnered praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, Nylon, FADER, Complex, Noisey and more. Reflecting KROY's polished black-and-white imagery, the cover won a prize at the 2017 Grafika Awards. The album’s success has also allowed KROY to perform throughout Canada and abroad, including New York and Paris, Le Printemps de Bourges, Austin (SXSW), Hamburg (The Reeperbahn) and Montreal (Osheaga). Between 2020 and 2023, the musician collaborated with Belgium-born producer Apashe, Canadian producer Felix Cartal, Korean producer QRION.

To express her forward and varied interests, Camille likes to say that, much like Seinfeld’s George Costanza, she could’ve become a marine biologist or an architect had she not turned her attention to music. On top of the success of KROY and her collaborative band Milk & Bone, the musician, who completed studies in orchestral composition, has crafted music for two Cirque du Soleil shows and several feature films with bandmate Laurence Lafond-Beaulne, including the theme song for King Dave for which the pair earned a nomination at the 2017 Canadian Screen Awards. Poliquin has also written the original music for the 2019  documentary Sisterhood, as well as the 17 episodes of Canadian TV series L’Empereur (Crave and Prime). Multiple KROY songs have been selected to play in feature films and TV series throughout the years.

In the time between SCAVENGER and MILITIA, KROY expanded her multidisciplinary practice. In exploring her obsession with robotic arms, she found an indispensable ally (Jonathon Anderson; The Creative School, Toronto Metropolitan University) who has brought her to work closely with KUKA robots. In 2021, she presented ANIMACHINA at the PHI Centre — a series of 7 videos premised on themes of surveillance, terror and animism, featuring her beloved robotic companion.
