CLOTHESLINE FROM HELL SHARES NEW SINGLE “YOU DON’T KNOW”, ANNOUNCES UPCOMING EP

Clothesline From Hell is Toronto based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Adam LaFramboise. His music fuses songs written and performed on acoustic guitar with programmed drums and samples, and the result is imaginative, energetic and full of color. Today, he shares the new single “You Don’t Know”, which follows in the footsteps of previous single, “Open Up!”, both of which appear on the upcoming EP, Soon We’ll All Be Smoking

“I know that ‘You Don’t Know’ started with Limp Bizkit,” says LaFramboise. “I wanted to write a riff like ‘Nookie’, that slithers up and down, hypnotically building and collapsing in on itself. I had been circling James Brown’s ‘Funky Drummer’ break for some time and almost used it as a test of the quality of the songs I was writing, like ‘is this shit really worthy of using such an iconic break?’.

“Vocally, I continued to aim for this sound that I felt like I had found on ‘Open Up!’,” continues LaFramboise. “Keeping things clear and sung intimately, but throwing some weird runs or complexities in the melody like I’d imagine Timberlake would. The result was a bit different than I had imagined … I’d say it was conceived to be a massive sign hanging behind my head saying, “everyone just get the fuck away from me, please”.

The first single from the EP, “Open Up!" features additional writing and production from Matty Tavares (Matty, BADBADNOTGOOD). The song is inspired by outsider songwriters, the post-grunge aesthetics of nu metal and the breakbeats that drove classic hip hop and Detroit house. Additional EP collaborators include Josh McIntyre (Thermal, Prince Innocence), Nathan Burley (Young Clancy) and Platinum engineer Lars Stalfors (The Dare, Mars Volta).

“I wanted to take the radical honesty of lo-fi acoustic music and cross it with the ugly, sometimes funny extremity of something like the WWE,” LaFramboise explains. “At some point I felt like the only way to keep making new music was to be influenced by nothing, but inspired by everything that has ever changed culture.”

“This was the first song recorded for the EP and in many ways a skeleton key that unlocked a the new sonic path for the project,” he continues. “I can remember us taking a breather and pulling up tracks like Filter’s ‘Take A Picture’ or Third Eye Blind’s ‘How’s It Going To Be’, trying to inspire the creation of what we saw as an Alt-Rock smash. We both tried to play some drums on the track, but ended up preferring the placeholder drum break I had put in, which lead me to use breakbeats on every track for a while. As always, it came out different than we had pictured. It’s like they say in sports, ‘this is why we play the games’. Everything for me starts with just an acoustic guitar and vocal, but eventually becomes a very different thing I can never accurately predict. Through this collaboration, I felt like a part of me internalized for so long finally burst, ushering in a new era of creativity.”

Today, the celebrated songwriter Jennifer Castle shares the ravishing country-soul ballad “Blowing Kisses,” her first new song in three and a half years, along with a video which she created to accompany the single. On “Blowing Kisses” Castle contemplates time and presence, love and prayer—and how songwriting and poetry both manifest and limit all four dimensions: ‘No words to fumble with/I’m not a beggar to language any longer.’ Featuring a sweeping string arrangement by Owen Pallett, performed by Estonia's FAMES Skopje Studio Orchestra, “Blowing Kisses” can be heard in its entirety during the pivotal scene during episode nine of the third season of FX's The Bear.

“Blowing Kisses” was co-produced by Jennifer Castle with engineer Jeff McMurrich in Toronto, and features Carl Didur on Piano, Mike Smith on bass, Evan Cartwright on drums, Jennifer Castle on acoustic guitar, Victoria Cheong and Isla Craig on backing vocals. Sasho Tatarchevski conducted the orchestra.

Jennifer Castle writes: “‘Blowing Kisses’ is a love letter sent from the very front of the occuring present moment. Language can be so futile; I always loathe explaining myself, and yet my love for you makes me want to try, my hands gesturing in endless loop. One day I will no longer be here to revere the buoyancy of the blue lake. I’m held by the loving energy of God.  Every rose has its thorn, truly, but let’s focus on the rose for now.”

The serendipitous story of how Jennifer Castle’s music came to be used on The Bear begins with a longtime friendship with Matty Matheson (Canadian chef and restaurateur who portrays the beloved handyman Neil Fak on the show) and their real-life history working together in a restaurant.

Castle shares: “It’s a great honour to have a song in Season 3 of The Bear. I met Matty at the original La Palette, a small French restaurant in Toronto where we both worked in our twenties. I was a waiter, and he was a chef. That restaurant was like a family to me, and we became fast friends: blending the worlds of work, music, art and family. I have watched him go on to become the beloved celebrity chef and entrepreneur that he is today, but upon meeting him near the dish pit twenty years ago, I would have guessed that would have happened anyway. The sparkle in him is true, and was as true back then as it is today.

“After watching Season 2 of The Bear last summer, and completely falling in love with the show, I sent him ‘Blowing Kisses.’ He shared it with his team, and to my delight things fell into place. What a special way to premiere this song! I will be watching along with the millions of other people who have fallen in love with this show. Congratulations to Matty, sending all my love and admiration for the people that make this show. Honoured to have a tiny role in its magic. Thank you!”

“I think this might be my favorite song I have ever written, and it took a while to reveal itself,” tells Leif. “I spent about two years waiting for the last verse to come. It was recorded in one live take with me on piano, Oliver on drums, Shahzad on bass and Angie, who happened to be in town, singing harmony. We added Rob Moose on strings and Cindy Cashdollar on steel guitar. I asked her to stretch out at the end, and, when she did, I just sat there in the control room, completely blown away.”

The video accompanying the track, was directed by longtime collaborator and award-winning filmmaker Kaveh Nabatian, and filmed in Montreal.

MORE ABOUT REVELATION
Recorded at both Sunset Sound and Dreamland in Woodstock, New York, Revelation is both spiritual and down-to-earth, from the heavens above to the oceans below. The 11 tracks on Vollebekk’s Revelation combine narrative lyrics and many one-take lead vocal performances with cinematic arrangements, gorgeous sonics, well-placed space and lush orchestration. Vollebekk’s Revelation songwriting process was inspired by an exploration that began with Carl Jung’s I Ching and continued into the science of alchemy and the mystery of the divine. The final result is at once organic, earthy and celestial, with themes of nature -- water, astral constellations, mortality – woven into a meditation on living in an ever-changing present laced with existential doubt, the search for a higher power.

An artist’s artist with many colleagues as admirers, Vollebekk – who self-produced and played piano, guitar, bass, B3 organ, harmonica, accordion and Moog synthesizer on Revelation – compiled an impressive supporting cast that speaks to the caliber of musicianship and feel of the recordings, including legendary drummer Jim Keltner, notable steel guitarist Cindy Cashdollar (Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and Rod Stewart), and revered bassist Shahzad Ismaily. His other album collaborators included artists Angie McMahon and Anaïs Mitchell on background vocals. The album was mixed by Tchad Blake (Tom Waits, Arctic Monkeys, Tracy Chapman) and mastered by Greg Calbi.
